Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

I tried to learn Hakan when SSF4 came out because he was the wildest new character, and Oni when AE came out because... he was the wildest new character. My Oni is more reliant on the fireball FADC throw unblockable than the EX slash unblockable, though I do have one bit of tricky tech with the EX slash that was so tricky JLM saw through it the very first time I tried it out.

Carlito claims to play Abel, and Asura used to play Abel and Gen too, I think.

Haha, I loved that you went for that reset on me Alistarr. The only thing I love more than getting a great read/cheeky reset on someone is when an opponent tries one on me. If I see it coming and escape it then that's great, but if it's tricky as hell and hits me then that's even better. Those Jurassic Park "clever girl" moments are the greatest.

And yes, I love to 'gief because he is so massively reads/mindgames based, and because a successful insta-blizzard read is one of life's greatest joys. Establish all the classic places you'd look for a cheeky SPD and, when the time is right and you've also established meaty SPD and green hand to punish back dashes, replace some of those SPDs with the blizzard:

Cross up splash - > close standing MP - > blizzard

Far standing roundhouse - > blizzard

Jumping MK (Blocked) . > blizzard

Jumping down + light kick knees - > blizzard

Meaty crouching jab/light kick - > blizzard .

SPD - > jab green hand - > blizzard.

EX green hand through a fireball - > blizzard.

Empty jump/knee drop into max jab SPD range - > blizzard

Standing medium punch - > blizzard

Crouching jab - .> standing jab - > standing light kick - > blizzard. Stop holding up!

And so forth.

Playing Gief for a long spell also taught me to be a lot more patient in my approach. My ranked Gief run featured some of the longest matches I've ever had, and the rewards when you get in are so worth it. Perversely enough, my favourite opponent as Gief was Dhalsim, because picking your way in against him requires so much patience and careful strategy, and then the reward when you get in is that you can end the round in seconds. I love fighting against Dhalsim with everyone for that reason actually.

I've been trying to play a bit of the twins over the last couple of days now it's less shameful to do so, I kind of want to get good with one of them. I have no idea what I'm doing with those supers though. To watch streams and see videos I'd assumed i could take off about half life just by mashing buttons but it turns out its a bit more involved than that and one drop pretty much ruins everything. Playing a bit more Yang for now as he at least seems to have other uses for meter and I need to work on rekka execution anyway.

Hey who else was amazed that Mortal Kombat has the second highest pot at Evo with $23,000 to be won? Jesus. http://shoryuken.com/2012/06/24/record-attendance-as-competitors-duel-for-over-100000-at-evo-2012-world-finals/

At CEO, the only bit of Mortal Kombat related streaming was Jebailey jumping on commentary to mention a match that had to be replayed because different consoles were at different stages of patching. A guy went for an overhead thatt's safe on block, except in patch1938754727472757239752078479378.6 it wasn't an overhead and was also wildly unsafe, so he lost. Is everybody S-tier in that game now? Last time I checked, Jax had completed his journey from bottom tier to s-rank. I'm hoping he's been buffed since then.

Jiro is another fellow who has played Adon for a while. I like to play as him but can feel the hatred pouring through the screen whenever I choose him. Nate used to root for the opposition if I ever picked Adon whilst round his house.

I like to use Abel too.

I've learned to deal with Jaguar tooth spam by neutral jumping, I can block fifty cross up jumping medium kicks per round, I like his close up pressure and his new 2012 frame traps, I love some of his footsie normals and I'm a big fan of the taunt that jumps over fireballs. I can even tolerate his endless shrieking and hateful grinning face.

The only reason I really hate him is that jaguar kicks don't need to be both very difficult to punish *and* break armour. It's free brainless pressure, and if you don't have the match up specific tech to beat it then it's utterly miserable to fight against. Crouching medium punch into jaguar kick isn't a block string, but who has enough Adon experience to habitually react to that? Not me is who.

Jlm giefs, right? I am working on gief, but my main aim with him is to blizzard donut and nothing else.

I wish I still had that replay of that one half-decent Siberian Blizzard I did in a rllmuk lobby. I tend to stick to U1 now because I think I'll have less trouble pulling it off, but I think I'm just as bad...

Yeah, my big problem is always having NO idea how to deal with tooth spam. I guess, what, just neutral jump on reaction into combo? I know that Rose's slide beats tooth clean too, bizarrely. Even though he's - on block it's still a pain because then he's in close and pushing you to the corner and it's just a nightmare. And yes, having ALL of his approach moves break armour, and his best normal be 2-hit. Really? Although air jugga kick doesn't break focus, does it? The grapplers eat him alive, though, which is nice.

Yeah, air jaguar kick can be focused, but if he's tiger knee-ing it you have to listen to the different sound he makes to pick the two apart, and again if you don't fight him often it's not easy to do.

Against tooth spam, yeah, I just neutral jump when he goes to the wall now, though if you don't have the right jumping normal it's not a perfect solution. Chun's neutral jump roundhouse is ideal though, because the horizontal range is good enough that you don't even have to time it particularly carefully. Also with Chun I'll charge ultra 1 if I get the feeling he's going to try and fake me out with a light or medium kick one. I can't be bothered with the uppercut/throw mix up after blocking it, and the timing to hit him out of it can be tricky.

Aye, he's that fucking ace Giefer with the psychic post-knockdown game! Also plays a Fuerte almost up there with MM Lefty. MM Madbeats is my favourite MMer because I like to pronounce it "muh muh madbeats!" like I'm a deejay with a stutter.

GC Zombie does indeed play Hakan.

Did play Hakan. The problem with my Hakan is that my play style was based 100% on uncrouchable oil dive gimmicks and not much else. When AE arrived, his oil dive start up frames were reduced which left me having to completely rewrite my flowchart. Either that, or I would have to learn to use him properly. I couldn't be arsed.

I'm all about Guy now, even though I am still at the stage where I'm just throwing stuff out there to see what works and what doesn't. I managed to get ultra 1 to fully connect as an anti air on Saturday night, which I will assume was a fluke that I will never manage again. It was at the end of this round, where you can also see me doing a lot of standing still doing nothing, my fingers waiting for instructions from my brain that never come because I don't know what I'm doing:

Just the worst use of a taunt, that shit drives me crazy.

w/r/t Street Fighter I have learned some Yun and started The Pale King this evening. I didn't seem able to follow up ultra 1 with lungepunch, did they take that out in 2012 or is the timing just pretty tight? Also I got a wee ginei-jin combo happening for the first time and it was so thrilling I dropped it as soon as I realised I was doing it. Yay!

Yas. I remember you mentioning that before and it sounding so ridiculous as to be essential reading. I've kind of been putting it off as I hate the idea of having no more full-length DFW available after I've finished but that's probably a sign of the crazy and I need to get over that. I've still never seen the last Consolevania for the same reason.

Yeah but after that then you can get into the nitty gritty of delillio and pynchon and that way lies some really fucking heavy duty stuff. Gravity's ranbow utterly destroyed me last time i attempted it.

Also does anyone want to go an watch a fistfull of dollars (dollarez(dolores?)?) at the prince charles cinema next tuesday.

I'm not into Pynchon - I spent a year trying to get into Against The Day, and made it halfway through before finally convincing myself it just wasn't my thing. I have a Delillo on the shelf but for now I'm reading 2666 by Roberto Bolano which is pretty good. I was worried it was going to be like that Marquez book where everyone has the same name and you* just get confused, but so far it's not been like that at all. I guess either I'm racist or the book reviewers who get quoted inside the dust jacket need to step their game up.

Anyway I played games against JLM last night and I picked Rufus and he just wilded around the rest of the cast and I won maybe two games. One of them was a pretty good win, though.

*I.

Talking about writing you thought you'd enjoy but didn't; I finished Braid last night and, as good as the puzzles and that little rewound end scene are, the writing in those little green books is pretty awful. Which is a shame, as the rest of the game has such a wonderful tone. Also, I'd been talking the game up a bit to the lass and she sat watching me approaching the end, guffawing at how cringe it all was.

I might get a wee cheeky hour of Street Fighter in at around four today. I forgot to say that I played some other man online, it was Super so I switched to Seth for the Covered in B's, and beat his Honda pretty narrowly even though it was all random headbutts and splashes. Punished the Headbutts with ultra 1 (after trying to copy Donut's post zappy-kick knockdown party trick of lp.sonic boom FADC teleport behind cr.hp > Ultra 1 and failing). After it was over I got a paragraph message about how bad I was and how he doesn't play spammers. I sent him a wee "good game kid" message and he went into a rage, daring me to challenge him again so he could "show you what I can do". So I sent him an invite, chose Dan and he, as predicted, went Ryu. Unsafe uppercuts all over the place, so cr.hp > hk.dan kicks to punish until I get meter for KRK FADC crouching taunt and he quits. Then I get more and more messages about being a spammer. He asks me to invite him again, so I go Ibuki, and he switches to Yun. Does nothing but lunge punches unless he's waking up, in which case it's upkicks, and quits when I land an Ultra. Then I get more messages about how he's been playing since SFIV and he's sick of spamming scrubs and so on. He then demanded I switch to regular Super, but didn't join the rematch as his "disc broke".

Madness. Imagine how properly, nauseatingly unwell you'd feel even at the thought of playing a videogame if that's how they made you feel. Why even bother? I had fun trolling away though, because I'm essentially a bad person.

Nice work. You seem to have a talent for sending people into a blind rage. This needs to be exploited somehow, perhaps for a YouTube show or maybe something for Channel 5..

I played JLM for about half an hour on this yesterday after spending a bit of time in training. We had a completely unprompted set of Oni mirrors of which I won maybe 1 or 2 and got demolished in the rest. It's a really fun matchup and we both learned that neutral jump mp is fun button when used as an air-to-air. JLM was busting out some very tasty link combos starting with a couple of cr.lp linking into b.mp to force the stand (I was crouching) into whatever followed the target combo. Delicious. His choice of when to wake up uppercut was pretty faultless too while I was throwing them out there like the scrub I am.

Also, I registered on NeoGaf last month, on about the 14th, as rllmuk and its alt urls were being consistently blocked in work and it was one of the only gaming forums I was getting access to. It's only now, five weeks later, that I got an email saying I'm allowed to post. I forgot all about it. Anyway, I went to their Street Fighter thread, but they don't sound like they're having any fun at all.

Also, there's an apparently hilarious thread in their archives titled "Who is the chach: him or me?" which is utterly, utterly impenetrable to my weak british* mind.

*I just said british to be more relatable.

Nice work. You seem to have a talent for sending people into a blind rage.

I like to think that people get even more infuriated when they takeout their rage in a spectacular comeback and turn to see me still grinning like a loon. I like playing Glasgow Kev, because he laughs and smiles when playing all the time while still being utterly brilliant at the game.
