Ultra Street Fighter IV

It can be for sure. Laugh has a habit of establishing Xbox Live uppercuts early in the set just so he has it in the opponent's head for the rest of the games. At the last Dreamhack he had a set with Afii's Dee Jay where he'd uppercut after almost every blocked jumping medium kick. *Almost* every one. When Afii didn't press a button and tried to bait one he miraculously wouldn't do it, but as soon as Afii felt sure he'd convinced him to stop he'd eat one on the next jump in. I don't think Laugh got it wrong a single time and it completely shut down the Dee Jay vortex. Going dumb is definitely a legitimate strategy, and yeah, in Choi's case that EX fireball he uses to win at the end of the match is where all those suicidal uppercuts paid off.

In other news, I played quite a lot of ranked today, with the goal of rehabilitating my near useless Chun Li. I've dabbled in way too many other characters since AE dropped and she is now so rusty I'm losing to everyone. I went from 2,900PP down to 2,000, then some of it started coming back to me and I've dragged it up to 2,600 again. I fought a Vega player who was 100% gimmicks, but was quite impressed that he tagged me with anti-air cosmic heel juggled with ultra 2. I know you can theoretically juggle anything off a cosmic heel, but the timing to get that ultra juggle out is rather tight. I also had a few matches against tasteDfeet, who I think Joffo mentioned earlier. His Dee Jay does medium up kicks on every wake up. Meaty low attacks make up kicks whiff and I kept punishing him but he woudln't stop. Unflappable that man.

It always amazes me how many players with much higher BP than me will fall for a walk up after a knockdown and throw out wakeup SRK after wakeup SRK.

Obviously when I do it it's John Choi style mind games :D

AON why do Daigo and other top Ryu players air jab at the start of a round?

Something I've noticed on most Tournament clips I've watches and can't figure it out.

Too soon to be a counter and too far away to be a block stun lock attempt so I'm stumped.

Haggar, because I wake up and hear it and for a moment I am in a world of rococo furniture and a single drop of rain rolls down the window as a breath of colour floods my otherwise monochrome existence.

Also because it's one of seven preset alarm sounds in the sleep cycle app.

A lot of players, shotos especially, will press buttons outside of max range to help disguise their other attacks and make their options more ambiguous. If the only thing the Ryu ever does at fullscreen is either stand still or throw a fireball then the moment you see his arms move you know he's throwing a fireball. If he's whiffing kicks and punches sometimes then each time you see him move you have to identify whether it's a fireball or a whiffed normal before you react to it.

Also, some people just like to press buttons, either to establish their various tools and the space they control or just for the joy of pressing buttons.

Other characters can use jabs to disguise buffered motions (Zangief for example can do a 360 or 720 motion during a jab or other normal and then press the punch button(s) to attempt a command grab the opponent might not be expecting).

Now on to ECT, which sounds like it was excellent, particularly the Marvel.

Top 16 was so good! I mean, I don't want to hype it too much or anything but yeah, so good. And the post-finals chit chat was unexpectedly and delightfully heartwarming.

Yipes and Marlinpie are in the midst of a ridiculous set of casual Marvel games right now. Ridiculous.

Quoth Viscant: "I don't think they're even trying to win - they're just trying to show each other up at this point."

Also the street fighter this evening is on spooky's twitch, apparently, and will be team matches and exhibition type stuff, with the real tournament starting tomorrow.

Also I need sleep.

Anyone know when that Daigo thing is happening? And what's the format? Is he just sat there taking on all comers on AE or is it game specific like he'll be playing Justin Wong at 3rd Strike and other folks at other games?

GGs to everyone last night. Highlights as a spectator were Nate's Evil Ryu combos and the T. Hawk/Oni Air Demon incident. My Guy didn't stink up the place too badly but I've already started dropping stuff after spending too long in ranked with other characters.

Nate, I'd like to see you land the Sako variant of that Evil Ryu combo. From practising in training it's pretty doable, and I'd like to add it to the rllmuk lobby to-do list.

It goes: Cr. mk - > Fireball - > FADC - > standing fierce - > mk Axe kick - > cr. jab - > fireball - > FADC - > standing fierce - > mk. Axe kick - > cr. jab - > lk. tatsu - > uppercut.

Basically the Evil Ryu b'n'b but with an extra loop in there. Obviously you can use crouching MP instead of the jabs, but even Sako tends to use the jabs for this one because it's such a long combo and those are the two points where you'd be most likely to drop it.

It didn't happen according to Jebailey's Twitter - http://twitter.com/C...732822089859074 Boo.

I'm just putting this team stuff here in case I want to watch it later, starts about 8 hours in. I don't know how to link to specific times like fancy Mr Donut http://www.twitch.tv...ing/b/321544329

Just add ?t=[8h/8m/8s etc] at the end of the archive URL. It's been there for months apparently!

Nate has ridiculous combos. So pretty. I also liked having both JLM and Haggar telling Imp the same complicated fighting game technology at exactly the same time, because they couldn't hear each other.

And sorry to Jiroczech for killing him during a taunt. I can never resist. Think of it as karma for laughing at poor, poor T. Hawk.

ggs everyone last night - nice lobby, sorry for lapses of attention and rampant taunts. Nate's E.Roo was very impressive, lovely combos. Got hit out of more taunts than I can remember but it was all fun. See... I didn't even mention air demons.
