Hey, imp, you speak japanwords. Are any of the things the fighters in the street fighting videogame say different in japanese than their translated efforts? Also, I kinda wanna know what Japanese Gen is actually saying when he says "Ya durty!" for his throw.

I'd haven't played enough with English voices on to answer that question properly, but nothing really springs to mind that's that different. I'll throw Gen on later in English and have a look.

I can tell you that one of my favourite lines ever in a Japanese videogame comes from the beginning of stage 2 of Mushihimesama 2 where the female character (a classic ditz) says "Wow! I've never seen snow before!" I dunno why, it just really cracks me up.

Excellent. What about "Profound Sadness"; does it seem less incongruous in context there? I'm obsessed with this kind of thing. I'm also obsessed with the utter nightmare localisation must be for games with either lots of puns, cultural references, or even minor jokes that are repeatedly and subtly referenced throughout the game. Especially in games like Paper Mario or Phoenix Wright where they've done a properly amazing job.

Oh, and I don't speak french either, but there a couple of jokes in Amelie I've always wanted to understand. The one where the Market Arsehole guy says his mum has a memory like an elephant, and then says "elephant mere!" as if it's a big punchline. Also, when they call Amelie "Amelie-mellow". Also, look at how beautiful her face is.

I get irrationally annoyed by subtitles in films. Almost every film has at least one typo and it drives me nuts. Last night we watched Red Cliff and in one scene, the army's 'moral' is discussed. That missing 'e' had my blood boiling.

Surely subtitles in an internationally released film should be proof read about fifty times over?

Surely subtitles in an internationally released film should be proof read about fifty times over?

I had a Manics DVD from their Millenium Stadium gig and they get some of the subtitles hilariously wrong. This would be a better story if I could remember exactly what and how wrong it was.

You should see the subtitles on 'Future Cops', they render the film almost unwatchable. Actually no, the film itself renders the film almost unwatchable.

As someone who hasn't played Street Fighter since SF2 in our youth club many many (many) years ago, which Street Fighter 4 version of the three (?) available should I buy? Do they supersede each other (in which case I should just buy the SSF4 Arcade Edition) or are they three separate games?

Oh, this was it, from the Heavenly version of You Love Us:

"bawl and scream

deaf melody, not goods in your culture scene,

for two pieces

when you can buy

patch me though electra

die die die"

To be fair, that's not much worse than the actual lyrics:

"Fall out scream

Death melody

Maggots in your culture scene

Fall to pieces

When you can't buy

Hey passive electorate

Die die die"

"Patch me through Electra" is the most brilliant wild stab at what someone might have said ever.

Imagine me being all smugly obsessed with the manics as a teenager. All eyeliner, greasy hair and miserable faces.

I think he says "munen" if I'm not mistaken. "Profound sadness" is a bit over the top, as "munen" literally means "chagrin" or "regret", but since it's not exactly a common phrase for regret (as an exclamation), it makes a certain kind of sense. Either that or the translator is a Scott Pilgrim (and the Infinite Sadness) fan.

The xbla Cave game Nin-2 Jump yells "zannen munen" every time you die. This is a more formalised phrase for deep regret or bitter disappointment.

I think I'm going to have to end my posts with Cave facts for a while.
