Ultra Street Fighter IV

Lads, lads massive news from me, I've managed to get Elf up to a C rank WHOO HOOO.

To say I'm well chuff is an understatement, I'm as happy as a dancing bear with a neckerchief :)

So this evening I sat down and decide to get this done, it took me 17 matches in the end as I started getting nervous as soon as I had hit 900 points :(

Along the way I managed to beat a Ryu, Vega, Akuma, Cammy and a Yun yes only five wins but that is still better than the other night :) . The Vega match was great from my point of view because it was a real come back from the brink of a loss.

The last match wasn't really a classic, I was nervous and getting sloppy by this point and also it was against a Ryu and I really struggle with the shotos still.

But this is how it went

and at the end of the match I heard him call me a cock sucker and I thought meh. Then I got this voice message (NSFW if you speakers are on as he is a bit of a potty mouth)

So I sent him back "Aw bless a scrub" :)

Phew I'm knackered now but happy and much thanks to everyone for the advice on Elf especially Goemon, cheers dood.

No I can go and play SFxT, whoo hoo.

Ok, here's the deal: I play almost exclusively as Dan, because I like everyone to know what they're getting. Also, because he's a god amongst men.

Anyway, I've just got Super Street Fighter 4 for the 3DS, and, just like almost every other fighting game I've ever played, I'm shite at it. Being on the 3DS, I can at least avoid the kind of absuive messages Plopboy received above, as after a few experiences with that kind of 'community spirit' I was totally put off the 360 version (despite having shelled out for Arcade Edition and a stick, and initially really enjoying it), but in any case I'd like to improve! Some will doubtless come with time and practice, but I could use a specific, probably REALLY basic, pointer:

How do I deal with a character that sits back, spams ranged attacks and has an anti-air? Specifically thinking characters such as Guile, Ryu, Ken, Akuma. I can jump hadoukens until the end of days, but at best that's a timeout stalemate, and at worst one mistake means I lose. In either case it's a bloody dull fight! If I try to jump over the fireballs to get in closer, the other player has enough time to recover and shoryuken/flashkick me out of the sky, which doesn't exactly end well either. I'm sure I'm missing a blindingly obvious countertactic, but I'm damned if I can see what it is :) Any help would be gratefully received.

The main thing to note against any sort of fireball/uppercut zoning is that you can make up a lot of ground without jumping. Block, inch forward, block, move forward some more. You can also neutral jump to avoid the fireball/chip damage but not lose any ground. You can also focus absorb fireballs and then dash forward or dash back to avoid chip damage and build up free ultra meter.

Against Ryu there's a sweet spot where if he throws a fireball and you jump over it you can get a full punish. Against him it's just a case of working your way into that range. Don' expect to be able to jump over the first or second fireball he throws and hit him, just inch your way in slowly. The range you want to jump in is about the range you're at when you start the match, if not a little bit closer. Oh, and with Dan if you see a fireball and you're within Ultra 1 range you can go through it and hit him with that.

Guile is in a separate category to other fireball zoners because his Sonic Boom recovers almost instantly. Against him you just have to block or neutral jump over Sonic booms and slowly inch forward and close the gap because he has difficulty moving forward whilst charging Sonic booms or Flash kicks.. Look out for when he has down charge, and when he doesn't you obviously don't have to worry about the flash kick. The other issue with Guile is that he has a whole selection of other anti-airs with just his normal attacks. To counter act this, one thing you can do that a lot of people don't against Guile is jump over the Sonic Boom but don't press anything. A lot of his anti-airs at certain ranges will only hit you if you've stuck out a jumping attack, and if you can make him miss with one then you've made up some good ground. With Dan you can also use light Dan Kick in the air to mess with the trajectory of your jump and throw off the opponent's anti-air timing.

A fight against a Guile who knows what he's doing and plays him all out zoning is unfortunately a frustrating and often dull match requiring extreme patience. There isn't really a quick fix or easy counter to it.

You've come to the right place here as there is a lot of love for Dan in this thread.

The person you want to speak to is Joffocakes as he has an awesome Dan, but I can offer a little bit of dodgy advice based on my time with the man in pink (to be fair he is my other character).

You can focus through the fireball and then dash to close the gap or if you are far away you can jump and do Dan kicks to close the gap but be careful of your spacing as not to get hit by an anti air. The real Dan tactic though is to taunt in the corner and then neutral jump and repeat until they get really annoyed and come to you

:)

Anyway there are much better players on here with better science than me so listen to them, but remember you don't really win with Dan unless you taunt at least once.

May the Saikyo be with you :)

Edit: Listen to JLM he knows best

The key to fighting guile is to realise that he has to hold either back or down back in order to charge a sonic boom, so you can walk him into the corner. Once he's in the corner you can start to eat him up, as nobody likes to be in the corner.

Another tactic is fo charge a focus attack, absorb the fireball, then dash out of the focus. If you do it right you should end up pretty close to them, maybe while they're still in recovery from the fireball, so you can throw/start attacking.

Also as dan remember to taunt a LOT when you knock someone down, then backdash as they'll almost certainly be enraged and try to uppercut.

Oh, and if you do get right up in Guile's face or have him cornered then be aggressive because his main weakness as a character is that he struggles at very close range and doesn't have very good options to get people off him after he gets knocked down.

Hello sir! I find the best punish to do with Dan, if you want consistency, is his hard punch (or crouching hard punch for more damage if you've got enough time to accomodate its slow startup) cancelled into his hard Dankicks (the quarter circle back and kick one). Putting pressure on people with the light kick version is good too as you're safe afterward, so just block (but be ready to tech a throw attempt). Sometimes your opponent will mash out a move and you can punish their error.

On 3DS guile is a real pain, because a lot of players play with lite mode, so don't have to worry about charging the sonic boom or flash kick. Makes for a pretty frustrating match, and one that's likely impossible to win against a player who knows what they're doing. Many of them don't though, so just play the patient game JLM mentioned and use it as practice. Tough practice.

I haven't read many books, so I wouldn't worry about having read the two best books that I've read! The other reason I recommended that book was that it's a nice short one, and it feels good to get another under your belt quickly after spending a while working through a monster like IJ. Read Invisible Cities instead.

I wouldn't say The Pale King is satisfying, but I'd happily recommend it. Whole hundred page sections of it are magnificent.

Now that we're back on topic I may as well mention that I recently gave up on Against the Day - I've been struggling through that book for months now and am a mere 500 pages in. I was almost at the point that I was wondering if I even liked reading any more. Turns out I just didn't like that book as I've burned through the one I picked up yesterday to replace it, but it feels very wrong to be leaving books unfinished. I'll probably feel guilty about it forever.

Canon Strike.

I've been meaning to get round to that for a while actually, I read that other Calvino one that everyone goes on about and loved it, downloaded the sample of Invisible Cities for my Kindle and never got round to buying it proper. Will do eventually, I started The Quiet American after IJ for something short and great I could power through.

Also I'm sorry to everyone who doesn't read books for these last few posts but Infinite Jest was a pretty huge deal to me. In so many ways it's exactly the book I've been wanting to read for years and I had no idea it existed until a guy on the internet who plays the same fighting game as me mentioned it, none of my real-life booky friends have read it or know of DFW so I'd probably have missed it entirely otherwise. What an inspired purchase SFIV was in so many ways.

Have Capcom said there'll no more DLC ever for SFIV:AE? Or might they do stuff to keep interest alive outside of core players? I was thinking it'd be (relatively) easy to add some of the SF cast from Strefekken like Hugo, Rolento, Poison or Elena.

I've not played in a week or so, but that's just cos it's still SFxT's honeymoon period - I think I'll be back playing this pretty soon.
