Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

Recommended Posts

I've just started playing the 3DS version. Not sure I prefer the d-pad or the circle pad, what do most people prefer?

Also, any tips for beginners? This is the first time I have played any version of SF4. Loving it, been playing Ryu mostly.

Stanley, I think we're pretty split on control methods - I know JLM uses the D-pad and I use the circle pad. Both work fine, though JLM reckoned it took several hours of play for the D-pad to "bed in" properly and feel nice. One thing I will say about the circle pad is I find it harder to know if I'm blocking or just crouching sometimes.

I'll leave basic tips to people who like writing long helpful posts and are good at videogames.

GGs MacMantis & Yasawas... Sorry for my lameness, not having the best weekend street fighting wise.

Man did i laugh when you guys had Ken in the pink cowboy outfit and Juri in a bright pink thing and at the beginning of the match Ken just some doing some stretches.

I'm definitely enjoying playing as Juri and that math was decidedly... Light red. Anytime I win a round as Dan I end up laughing. Just because. I'm winning a surprising number of matchups as him. Well, surprising to me.

Even if you're not that invested in the game then it's definitely worth spending half an hour or so in training mode with "input display" turned on so you can see what inputs you're actually sending to the game when you think you're inputting a nice clean command. Really helpful in helping you get used to the controls.

General consensus here (both on 3DS and big consoles) is that you get used to whatever control scheme you're using and there's not that much inherent advantage to using any of them (compared to knowing the game and being comfortable with what you're using). If the circle pad is more comfortable just stick with it and you'll improve.

Also, if you fancy playing some games at some point, I believe Nate Dogg's post sigfile contains a link to a list of people with the 3DS game and what their IDs are, so go ahead and fire off a few PMs! There's no way to send game invites so you have to organise sessions via rllmuk or whatever, but it's more fun than playing random folks, and we might be able to give you a few pointers as we go.

i ended up using the dpad in the 3ds version as i'd often fail to crouch block with the circle pad. Also, predictive text gave me crotch clock at first there. Sexual harassment and street fighter are one and the same.

As for general tips, yeah, try training mode and watch those inputs. I also have triple punches/kicks on the touch screen as ultras are awkward otherwise. A basic and useful thing to know as Ryu is that if someone tries to jump in you can use the light punch version of his dragon punch and if it hits or trades do his ultra 1, the fireball one. It'll catch them as they fall. I'd give a load more advice, but i'm on my awful wee nokia xpress music phone waiting for a gig* to start. If you have an xbox or ps3 then Street Fighter 4 arcade edition is only about 12 quid online, maybe play or thehut, and has the dlc men and stuff. Most folks here are on 360. I'll likely type more tips when i'm early for work tomorrow because i like typing about street fighter.

*King Charles at King Tuts. There's an arcade cabinet here, with a bunch of games. No street fighter, so i played Mortal Kombat. I forgot how awful that game is. Picked sonia by accident and the stick is bat top, the buttons spongey and in a straight line. I wasted 50p. Shoulda played Robotron.

I'm lame... what's that from? (Taken from Brokentier btw)

It's the Japanese character for "jump". I think it'll mark you as a scrub if you wear it because jumping is generally frowned upon during high level play. Don't jump.

I'm doing the trial mode with Ryu at the moment and I upto about trial 9 - just learnt Jump Hard Kick, Crouch Hard Punch - Hadoken, Focus. Feels awesome when you start stringing stuff together.

I used the touch screen for focus attack as not sure how to do it manually!

Medium punch (MP) and medium kick (MK) together. Hold down to charge it up, or input a dash while you're charging it (or as you release it) to dash out of it so you don't have to sit through recovery time (you can do all that using the touchpad shortcut too).

You may need to turn to the internet for help with the next few trials as once you get into cancelled focus attacks (FADC) it can be a bit tricky to get your head around at first. Vesperarcade on youtube has videos of what every trial combo is supposed to look like.

Re: The Brokentier t-shirt:

It's the kanji symbol on Strider Hiryu's chest, and is one of the characters used to spell his name.. That t-shirt was designed by Brokentier for Clockwork, who was known for inventing and being the sole user of the Strider/Dr. Doom combination in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. It was notable because that game has a very rigidly defined tier list of viable characters which is only about ten characters long in a roster of over 50, and before Clockwork Strider and Doom were not on that list. He still uses them in UMVC3 and is still a beast. It also has a little bomb on the back of it in reference to a particular MVC2 money match moment.

GGs in Marvel AllyStarr. I'm glad I got to show you some of my Captain America stuff this time! Excellent set with lots of good happenings and things. Marvel is lots of fun.

I see you commented on this in the Strekken thread. I would have done the same but Revival thinks the topics discussed in a thread should vaguely reflect that thread's title. The nutter.

Also Joffo, "Hyper Grove" is the best thing. +10 for that.

For that one you want to cancel the Shoryuken straight into the Super, so the Super comes out before the Shoryuken fully leaves the ground. The lenient inputs in this game mean that the command for the Shoryuken will also count as the first part of the input for the Super, so basically you need to input a fireball motion immediately after inputting the Shoryuken motion and you'll get the cancel.

As Alistarr says, VesperArcade is the place if you can't work out exactly what the trial is asking you to do. The one you mention is here:

Oh, alternatively for that one, if you do the Shoryuken with light punch you have time to land and then juggle them with the Super for a fancier looking solution.

And yes, I love 3DS fighter. I got a 3DS at launch and it was my only game for it until I got 3D Land and MK7 this Christmas. I never got bored of it. It's a shame it feels a little outdated now that I've been playing the newer iterations on console for quite a while, but I still play it on every train journey I go on.

Good to play you sir!

Dan really is no joke in 2012. That has to be one of the best uppercuts in the game he has and as a Dhalsim player anyone who can alter their trajectory once they jump can basically ruin me for free.

Roundhouse Dan kicks just thrown out at mid range can be a real pain to deal with. They make up for him having very limited footsie tools in a lot of match ups because they're safe against most of the cast. He also has a pretty good back dash, so he's less committed to the post Dan Kicks mix up than it would appear.

I remember playing against your Bison in Vanilla. Was very solid indeed. For all the changes and tweaks that have happened since Vanilla, dictator still plays about the same, so I don't think coming back into SFIV with him would be a bad move.

There's always SFXT as well. Aside from those who have had early copies like yourself, everyone will be going in at day 1, and the fact that a lot of us have kept playing SF4 from Vanilla until now won't necessarily be a benefit because we'll all have to unlearn SF4 habits to get good at the new game anyway.

For any terminology queries or other pointers I don't think you can too far wrong with this thread. I don't thnk anyone's ever been given grief for asking a question that's already been answered or the other flameworthy sins that make the SRK forums so miserable. I think a lot of the acronyms and terms make everything look a lot more complex than it really is too, and most of us in here just use them out of lazy convenience. Again though, I think this thread is great in that people will post every so often asking what the hell we're going on about and they'll always get an explanation.

For stick I can't recommend much aside from putting the time in and getting over the initial hump of it feeling very awkward and wanting to go back to pad. If the 360 pad was anywhere near the standard of my beloved Saturn pad for 2D fighters then I may never have made the switch, but now I can't imagine going back.

I think playing a lot of Super Turbo/HD Remix helped a lot when I as trying to pick up stick. All those classic motions still apply, and the fact that those games have less lenient inputs mean that you won't be picking up bad habits as you learn like you would with SFIV. Personally I also think it helps that Bison is your main, because for me an arcade stick is the only way to play charge characters. Holding the stick back and then flicking it forward to perform the move feels intuitive pretty quickly, or at least it did for me when I switched from pad.

I guess I can't get too specific unless you have an idea of which game you'd be most interested in picking back up. Having play SFXT as well as what's already out, is there one of the current big 3 games you enjoy significantly more than the others?

Regardless, get in the lobbies and stuff. Nothing really beats getting games in.

I'n back home tomorrow and I've got a week's leave, so I expect to punch and kick all of yous a lot. I'm also honestly considering XT. Scared.
