Ultra Street Fighter IV

Apparently there's a wild 5v5 tourney in japan this weekend, and I was looking at the teams and there's an all Dan team called Five squadron Dan Saikyo Returns

Which is the best name for a thing that there ever has been or will be, They can also submit a team motto, which is:

"Dan used to be hot in the chest of the whole world!"

I love google translate: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.goo.ne.jp%2Furi_kagecchi&act=url

Yay, off to see my family for the weekend.

No Street Fighter for four days :(

I haven't been on SFIV since Wednesday of last week thanks to my telly dying. I'm having it looked at by someone at the mo rather than just getting a new one, hence the wait, but still...

Yesterday I caused someone to rage quit with Juri just as the Ultra Combos final blow hit, today I got a couple of Victories as Dan against people ranked considerably higher than me. I'm definitely getting better and/or more annoying.

Also had a series of encounters/conversations with a guy who was trying to cure his hangover with weed.

He still managed to beat me mind.

Thanks for those, dude. I totally didn't deserve that draw. Apologies for my super lame guile. You nearly had me quite a few times though. Viper and sim didn't fare well at all. Fuerte is so hard to play, well done for sticking with him!

I'm just glad I got the krk fadc taunt and fireball x super taunt in there. Wahooooo!

I felt a bit bad for that random who jumped in though.

Some stuff about Wednesday Night FIghts from last week:

One of the best bits of this stream was Marn playing casuals on stream at the beginning. Fancy Dudley stuff, fancy Viper stuff and even some fancy Ryu stuff. I could easily watch a whole stream of Marn casuals. Marn vs Alex Valle was hype stuff. DJ Devine and co. trolling Marn with the Phoenix Wright speech bubbles and the battle to land Ryu's ultra 2 in the second game.

DJ Divine vs Floe playing random select was fun, though extremely unlucky for DJ Divine that Floe got Yang in game 2. Style points to Floe for finishing the match with command grab - > standing jab - > Ultra 1. One frame Desk-esque linkage there.

I thoroughly enjoyed Hungbee beating Floe. Best T. Hawk in the U.S. but he just doesn't get enough exposure. Very impressive to take on one of T. Hawk's many iffy match ups against a strong opponent and still pull out the win.

Snake Eyez's Zangief is truly inspirational to watch as someone attempting to get good at Gief. His spacing is absolutely immaculate, and his footsies are so good that people get too scared to throw out pokes. If you achieve that as Gief then you've pretty much won already. I also liked that he tried a wake up Blizzard when a guy jumped over his head to get out of the corner and got EX Bear Grab instead. The commentators were perplexed as to why he went with wake up Bear Grab but I totally felt his pain.

I really enjoy watching Floe fight against Seth, mostly because he's one of the most vocal critics of the character and you can see how much he hates him in his playstyle. With Guy he just rushes down and doesn't stop unless the Seth player forces him to. I think it's a pretty good approach against him because he'll do it back to you if you don't, and there's no point trying to lame him out because his options to open people up will get you eventually. Was very pleased to see Alex Valle beat Online Tony in winners semis. Outside of Poongko I'd be happy if Seth was never in a top 4 again.

Snake Eyez vs Thrillhouse was a tremendous game. There are definitely two levels of good Ibuki player, and I think the Zangief match is a good indicator to separate the really good ones from the ones who just have the vortex down. If an Ibuki is still excellent in matches where the vortex isn't a great option then they have my respect. The fact that there's a distinction there is also why I don't think Ibuki is as stupid a character as Seth or Viper, who can boil every match up down to the same routine. This was an incredibly tense and patient battle of footsies and was very very difficult to call. Good stuff.

Snake Eyez vs Alex Valle in both Winners and Grand finals was beautiful, and easily my favourite match of the week. Zangief vs Ryu is just such a pure Streetfighter match up. I love playing that match as either side, and I especially enjoy watching two top class players in a decent length set of it.

The fact that it's a pure Streetfighter match also means that Valle is amazingly good at it. Snake Eyes has amazin spacing and footsies and plays the match up almost perfectly himself, but on numerous occasions during this set he found himself cornered by Valle's Ryu. It's one thing to stand your ground against Gief, but to be able to walk him all the way back to the corner without jumping once is just ridiculous. Even in the rounds where he didn't dominate, he wouldn't move any further back than where he was at the start of the round. He just plants himself on the spot, refuses to be moved and then occupies every extra inch the opponent gives him. I'd have loved to see Vangief vs. Valle in a FT10 back in Super, and I'm sad that it didn't happen. This is the next best thing though, and I'd take this every week over online Tony vs Hugo101.
