Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

Cheers to JLM, Donut and Mute for the games last night. I started in ranked where I played so badly I got the rage (I may have Semitsu-button-shaped bruises on my forehead) then moved to a cosy lobby with JLM & Donut where I embarrassed myself and finally, when Mute couldn't join us there (I blame Jellum), finished up in a lobby with him. Sorry if I was a bit joyless, I think ranked sucked it all out of me.

But that's what anyone who bumps into Desk says. Isn't it?

:) true enough. He's a cool guy, invited me along to the SF sessions he goes to and was bigging up Strekken. May pop along to see some science.

In retrospect I should have asked him what his stance on sexism (Strekksism) was.

The only reason i recognised him and had a chat was because I attended a ranbat up here way back when Vanilla 4 was fresh out (just before the first Gamerbase Manchester tournament thingy) and he was there. His friend lent me a 3rd Strike DVD that I essentially stole as I never went back and have been racked with guilt (well, a little) since, so I asked him if he was still mates so he could pass it on.

He was a little sheepish when I told him he had a legion of fans on here.

GGs Jiro. Much fun was had. My Yun is appalling.

Just had an excellent, excellent set of games against a Honda player named Kongrosian. I played him in ranked and just about scraped a win against him, then gave him his rematch and he beat me pretty soundly. It then occurred to me that I have no Gief vs Honda experience, so I asked if he had time for a FT5. We ended up playing 20 games, going back and forth until I had picked up enough information and match-up notes to start edging it towards the end.

His Honda is really good. 100% consistent with low jab into hands, tagging the roundhouse on the end whenever available, on point with all his footsie normals and anti-airs, and of course very adept at controlling the skies with neutral jump fierce. He also had the max distance for Ochio throw down, so I'd quite often get scooped out of nowhere when I'd forgotten he even had that option.

Honda's set of options after a knockdown require the Gief vortex to be done a little differently, so that was the main thing I picked up from playing a long set against him. He was mixing up his options a lot, and was delaying them or using reversal timing based on what I was doing, rather than just picking his wake up option and going with it regardless. As it went on I was learning to react to each one once I'd seen it a few times, so blocked butt slams were getting SPD'd, and Honda is also a great character to practise what I have decided to call "sit confirms". That is to say, pausing for the briefest moment to confirm that they're staying put during a pressure string, on their wake up, on my wake up or during footsies and then grabbing them with an SPD. This may well be the most important skill to learn as a grappler, and I really do think I'm getting better at it.

Testing out Gief's varied set of jump-ins against Honda's normals and low jab controlling the space in front of him was also useful. Gief's normals are all so cleverly designed, and almost every button has some kind of match up specific purpose as a result.

Long sets of the same match are also great for producing little oddities. In one of the matches he went for wake up ultra and I'd done a meaty lariat, so it did that thing where Honda's Ultra pushes a spinning Gief accross the screen for a second, then Honda twatted because he runs out of invincibilities. Also had quite a few moments where EX headbutt had just enough invincibilities to pass through my insta-blizzards, which works out much better for Honda than Gief because he gets a nice escape.

Personal highlight of the set was spending most of the set working out how to approach safely because Honda's one of the few characters with enough damage output to scare Gief, and by the end being able to jump just[/ short of Honda's neutral jump fierce range and catch it with air to air Blizzard. Beautiful.

EDIT: Apologies to drunken imp also. Your message was sent about a minute after I stopped playing against Jiro and turned the Xbox off.

More ranked headaches last night, I really need to stop going in there until I've practiced more in lobbies. I still don't watch the opponent closely enough to react, I just do stuff. Miss a lot of easy anti-airs etc. that way. Still, got one win, a "gg" stranger message, and had a good mirror match against a much better Cody. Would have got a round off him if I hadn't messed up an easy Ultra punish. [/wtityb]

Up for some fights tonight inbetween chores if anyone's on.

Enjoyed our wee session last night Gel-Ohm, a nice friendly set of matches played for laughs and no sexual harassment.

Before I joined you, I got an invite from a guy on my friend's list called > Redbull x or something. Last time I played him on ranked, I edged a few wins and then got invited to a lobby where he kicked my arse (mostly down to a poor connection) with his annoying Ken. After a few matches he left with a jaunty "ggs - beat you again sometime" the wee scamp. Last night I gave his main Ryu a kicking with my lame Dee-Jay.

Street Fighter!

Isn't there a Gief technique, where he jumps slightly shorter?

It was back in Vanilla so I don't know if you can still do it but it was something like jumping up towards and immediately holding up, allowed a slightly shorter jump arch or something.
