Ultra Street Fighter IV

I'm adding some folks right now for future, was having some ranked but my silly housemate is home with her silly ideas about sleeping.

Got my first BP with Akuma against a fellow rookie, also my first perfect against the laggiest guy ever. I have to remember that you only get better by playing, and also how much fun it is. Too many evenings I decide to watch telly or something then I get bored and put the Xbox on and it's like, AWW YEAH. First match of the evening was ridiculous, Cody vs Oni. Three Ultra finishes, and won the last one with what looked really cool, but was actually just me throwing out EX Bad Stone > Ultra 2 because it'll work one of these days. He did one of those bastard EX crossup things inbetween and I caught him, the glowy bastard.

I've been in training mode for the last couple of sessions to get to grips with the new controller and new character. I was using Ibuki and Guy alternately until one clicked with me first, it was Guy in the end.

I've spent 2 hours in training with him and what an eye opener it's been. I was looking down the frame data for him and couldn't beleive how lenient some of his links are. I'm used to playing characters where at best, a normal will leave you at +5 where your fastest normal comes out in 4 frames. Guys close standing hard kick to the god damn face leaves him at +8. +8! After the strongest normal! His crouching lk comes out in 3 frames which gives you an absolute age to land it. I've been practising jump mk crossup -> hk -> send message to opponent -> lkxrun->slide which combos beautifully.

His mp->hp target combo is lovely to tag onto a hk as that can sp cancelled into qcb lp (hosanshu or something) and then a hk hurricane kick to finish (or a super if it's stocked). After getting that down, I went off to ranked.

There are some things you don't learn from training mode, 1, how to get in to land the combo you've been practising for hours. And 2, how to stop the other man getting in and breaking your face. Also, it turns out I had never practised blocking with the new controller, and whenever I was on 2p side and went to crouch block, I jumped back. Every time. Needless to say I didn't win a single match, although I did sneak a couple of rounds here and there. My PP (or is it bp?) is hurtling down towards 1000 and if I play again tonight, it may well go to 0.

In spite of all that, I am having fun with the game again.

Joeplus, in my current form I would be great combo practise for you, we should fight sometime.

It can be good practice to do training mode against the CPU with infinite meter - you get the benefit of frequent opportunities to try your stuff without the downside of not needing to react to what an opponent's doing. It also helps for practising hit confirms, etc. You need to be careful who you pick as your opponent though because some CPU characters are just stupid with their instant reactions. The original SF2 characters are mostly okay. Fuerte and Cammy are the most stupid.

It can also be demoralising when you realise you just spent the last hour getting bodied by a piece of plastic that cost you less than £200, mind. Also, remember that the computer is not a person and so mixups and mind games don't work on it, but that doesn't mean you can't just do them and think about how a human might react.

I'm the opposite - I forget that online opponents aren't the CPU and won't just walk into my Fuhajins like idiots...

Sorry to treat this as the general Street Fighter thread, but I followed previous advice of playing as Yang in Third Strike. I have had some success but I still can't get over that Fei Long's advantages got split up between about 3 characters. Yang has the rikkas, but the wake-up attacks, unusual animations and so on are spread about. If I didn't have a favourite character I think I would be alright but it just jars not to have an equivolent. Being cornered by a fucking Akuma player and not being able to wake up into a flaming dragon kick just gets my goat. Yang's rolling spring kick thing is no substitute because almost any hit seems to break it and he has to roll about three times before he kicks.

Third Strike seems like a great game if you were playing with friends, but online (against Japanese players where I live) it is just hopeless. Of course shotokan folks are almost the same as always, but Urien or that kind of player, you may as well put the controller down. I think that yet again a Street Fighter purchase is in my future. I need my Fei Long back.

No one has a dragon kick motion DP in TS do they? Mate I played Fei Long for years in Alpha 3 (at a very low level) and was left wanting when Double Impact came out, but 3 was about breaking away wasn't it it? Being different.

I play Dudley in TS and IV (at a low level) because I like him and his moves along with a bit of dry ASS Fei Long, purely for the memories. If you're sticking with TS you just need to pick someone else I think.
