Ultra Street Fighter IV

I'll hold you to that first part if we ever face off...

Speaking of RCL... If I get the arcade sticks in time (or as it appears at the moment, at all), and we get the RCL stuff set up early enough on the 25th I was thinking of sticking SS4:AE up between 5 and 6pm for an hour long blast. Could be fun on the rear projected screen.

The concept of running fighting game tournaments at The George is something I've been thinking of as an expansion off of RCL (we always intended Rock Band to be just the first of a number of strings in our bows) and if the interest was there (ie, we knew we'd bring in enough people to do tiered style tournament) I think they'd happily support it as most the staff there are gamers in one way or the other.

I would have come to one of your Rock Band nights by now, but Saturdays are problematic for me. If you ever have a fighting tourney thing going and it's not on a Saturday, I will definitely come along and support.

Do it :)

That is cheap as hell. I have the disc though. Has trophy support been patched in or anything like that? I think that alone would be enough reason for me to buy it again. Actually, the chance to buy it again is enough reason for me to buy it again.

Wait... does that mean... I could play it on Vita too? I don't know how all that stuff works.

I gave God Hand and Capcom Fighting Jam to that guy Andy whos sexuality we disputed at SVB and he said it was shit. I was in too much shock to kill him immediately.

No, it's just as it ever was, and I don't think it'll work on Vita. That would be amazing though. The only difference is it will sit on your PS3 hard drive for all eternity.

Amazingly, yesterday I bought a $10 PSN card so I could download it with my US account as it's been on the US PSN since October. Luckily I only paid about £8.50 for it so I'm not too out of pocket. I would quite happily pay four times that for God Hand, easily one of my all-time favourites.

Now we just need an HD remake of Viewtiful Joe.

My greatest gaming achievement is completing the first level of God Hand on Hard difficulty. It required the patience of a zen monk and the reflexes of a cobra.

Also, getting back on topic, last night I made Laksa soup. It took me like 20 minutes and is genuinely one of the best things I have eaten in the last year. IT's just so ridiculously nice. I order you all to go and get some laksa pasta and chicken and beansprouts and coconut milk and marvel at the utter delicious joy of it,

I love God Hand but I got stuck on it about halfway through. I should go back to it.

Guys, you should do what I do so you don't have to re-buy these games. Keep every single game you've ever bought and constantly buy more and more games (even ones you'll never play) until your house is fit to burst and your gf hates you.

I got rid of all my games because my house did burst (Joffo cameo 8 seconds in)!

I now never keep anything. I either trade stuff in or just give it to other people because I realise I'll rarely go back anything. I don't keep the boxes for my games either.

I'm all for digital distribution. Which is why I'll likely buy God Hand again. I also don't like getting up off my fat arse.

Non Saturdays are problematic for us, sadly. :P But I'm hoping we might be able to do a Bank Holiday RCL event at some point in the future. We're booked on Saturdays through to April as it stands.

As for a fighting tournament... we might try it on a different day. The basement of The George is a pretty busy venue most nights of the week but I'll speak with management, find out what sort of numbers they'd want us to bring in for... say, a Sunday event or similar and take it from there. I'll ask them if there's anyone in there before us on the 25th of February and if the answer is 'noone', we'll get the gear set up early and anyone who feels like coming down for a large screen SF4 or similar knockabout can do so. Have spoken to my two partners-in-crime on the RCL events and they see no reason (punter interest pending) that we couldn't run semi-regular fighting tournament events. I may well hassle this thread in the future as I try and work out some of the mechanics of structuring the tournament. You all seem like perfectly reasonable people. Maybe.

Guile is pretty much undisputably the best of the charge mans. Dee Jay has a better smile though.

Blanka is inarguably the best charge character, but only because he's not a real charge character. You can tell by the way he's fun to use.

Hello, yes, thems were some ggs. Don't be too hard on yourself, I don't think I got a win in with akuma or stupid fat gouken at all. You kept eating my dive kicks right up. My main advice I guess would be to try jumping a bit less, as I think I was doing a lot of damage anti-airing you. Also watch yourself with the full screen fireballs when I have an anti-fireball ultra (eg bison U2, vega U1, Honda U1) stocked, I think I got you with some of them more than I should've.

Oh, oh, and with sagat try to kara uppercut (use f+lk then do an uppercut and it kind of cancels in), as that can anti-air from miles away. Any time you want more games just ask, though, was fun.

Brief geegs to Pockets, who suddenly whipped out Ryu against random select without warning, giving my day-minus-one Terry Hawk a dreadful shoeing.

Extended geegs to Joffo, who smacked me all over the place with Makoto and Rufus and kept me up later than I'd intended because he just kept beating me and I wanted one more win before bed.

And stop calling the raw ultra after a blocked EX GT a 'frametrap', you're not fooling anyone. It's like me and my 'reads'.

Haha, but it's my favourite frame trap!

Good games indeed sir; you were terrifyingly consistent with that Evil Ryu combo; I particularly liked the time you finished it with an SRK > EX SRK double juggle in the corner. And, of course, the full delicious combo into FADC Ultra as a cherry on the cake. That final match ended brilliantly as well; taunt to bait taunt then EX Tatsu before I had time to block, haha. I love it!

Gee Gees to you also, Pockets! Those Zangief mirrors were ridiculous fun! Can't believe random select threw us into those twice, though I can believe I lost. And you were on point with your post-solar plexus strike cr.hp as Ryu as well! :D

I ended up taking Dan back into ranked to claw back BP, as I'd B of Shamed myself all the way back down to 4200 or so. Back up to around 4800 now, so I should be able to get back over 5000 and quit, haha. Played a Seth player in non-AE Super as Dan and won. He asked for more so I used Sim and got destroyed by him 11000 BP Ken. Then once more against his Ken as Ibuki, and managed to take it down to the last slithers of health in the final round. Still lost though. He sent me a message of "you're a beast!", which was either because he thought I was good, or because I accidentally used Ibuki's schoolgirl costume.

Another man sent me compliments for my Dan, and another man sent me a message saying "Lucky battyman Dan" because I Ultra 1'd through his Akuma fireball attempts twice. I let him know that I only pick him because he's the only openly gay character besides Zangief. He never messaged me back.

I've always had a hate-hate relationship with Zangief. I hated to play as him, and hated to play against him. This is historical right back to playing SF2 at the annual fairground in my hometown and on the Super Nintendo port of 'World Warriors'. Such is my hatred that I never really picked him up in SS4... until last night. Played around in training mode for ten minutes then did a run through arcade mode and against most opponents had a easy time of it. I'm not sure if the fact I finally got to grips with this legacy character is down to an improvement in controllers or some sort of miraculous increase in my gaming skills. Played around a bit with Makoto... that might take a slightly longer time to get used to. Character felt really powerful but yeah, the walk speed felt frustrating as all hell.

Reading this thread is weird. Coming to the realization that I've played SF2 for almost 20 years and yet I feel like I know bugger all about how to *really* play it.

They've really simplified Zangief's 360 motion for the spinning piledriver in this, so you can do it with basically a half circle back/forward ending in upback/upforward then press punch to do a quick standing SPD, which is really useful as it means you don't need to jump-in SPD or buffer it into a normal move. Back in Street Fighter 2 you had to do it pretty much perfectly. I still mess it up all the time. Zangief was the person you chose just to take the piss out of your opponent.

Oh, and one excellent and useful thing to know about Zangief is that after you land an SPD you can do his light punch Green Hand (Chernobyl Palm) move straight away and you'll end up right next to the opponent as they wake up and be safe enough to block. That setup is pretty much key to a lot of his basic mixups between doing another SPD (which you can easily buffer in during the green hand and do right away; lots of players unfamiliar with the matchup fall for this quite a bit, several times in a row), crossing the opponent up, another green hand to catch a backdash, or Ultra 2 (you can do it instantly in the air by buffering in the 720 motion during the green hand so you end on up-forward as it finishes then press punches as soon as you're airborne) to catch dragon punches/jumps/backdashes etc.

Oh, and troll continually with neutral jump headbut (up and hard punch while jumping). It does an insane amount of stun. Hit someone twice in a row with it and they're usually dizzy. Back in Super you'd get a Stun on Seth in one hit if it was counterhit. The matchup was utter hell for gief otherwise though.

Zangief vs the AI is fairly easy, since the AI gets really confused by the fact that lariat is invincible and keeps trying to punch it. The easiest way to get the achievement for beating the game on hardest is just to play gief and spam punch lariat. He's a totally different beast against a real person.

Also Theresa Hawk is the best grappler in the game, due to being able to fly, feather in his headband, mexan.

Hawk is fun. I've spent a bit of time in the lab with him, and can do the crossup dive after lp typhoon with some regularity. I think I cheekily caught potato with it last night, it works kinda well on ranked if you mix it in with safejumps to bait out reversals/splashes to hit them on the normal side.

Oh, oh, christ. I also got potato twice in a row last night with blanka's fucking filthy ambiguous ultra off the forward throw. I've never used that setup before, but thought I'd give it a whirl, and oh my christ it is horrible. I didn't have the slightest clue which way he should have blocked.

Got a reply from Mad Catz, there was a glitch in the order, the second of the Brawlsticks will be on their way today for delivery tomorrow. At the very least this means I can take the one I've recieved out of the box and (possibly) order some buttons to do a quick mod on it.

Ah excellent, so I still stand a very good chance of getting my arse handed to me on a plate. Good to know. :D

So, here's a thing: a friend of mine went to the DICE Summit and was handed a free SSF4:AE unlock code for Xbox Live. He gave it to me as he isn't too hot on Street Fighter... except I am not either. Chances are if you are reading this thread then you will be, so if you want it fire me a PM and I will send it on over to you (for free, of course). I am informed game unlock codes are region-free so it shouldn't be an issue what with it being obtained in America.

First come first served, will update when it's been taken :).

EDIT: And taken!
