Ultra Street Fighter IV

Also, talking of snacks of yore; I have already spake of those dangers:

And those cunts who ask if you remember these things, in this exact sequence: "When Starburst were called Opal Fruits?", "When Milky Ways weren't white inside, and were more like mini-mars bars?", "Captain Planet?", "Chelsea Whoppers?", "Creamola Foam?", "White dog poo?" and "Cadbury's Secret?".

Fucking Metro.

Also also, facebook words suggested there's a Zengief Ultra 2 option select vid doing the rounds. Can't watch it in work; anyone able to explain how it works? TA!

Haha, for me it's that I dearly miss Pepsi Blue. I don't give a shit if anyone remembers it, I just wish more people had bought it. :(

The Option select Ultra two is after a sweep. You hold up forward after the sweep, do a jump roundhouse as late as possible and option select Ultra 2. If they stay put then you get a safe meaty jump roundhouse, if they jump, back dash, chicken wing, EX sbk etc. etc. etc. then they eat instant air brizzaaaaahd.

He also has some fancier set ups off crouching jab. The video is by Desk, so there's a full transcript at his blog:

This is an option select against backdashes and certain reversal options. If you opponent blocks or is hit, Zangief remains grounded and continues a combo or block string. if they back dash, Zangief will re-jump and instant air Ultra 2.

Some things to note, unlike a lot of other option selects, the frames you gain when the jump attack whiffs must be spent as economically as possible, otherwise the os will fail. By this I mean, the Ultra 2 input (in this case, from back to up-forward, held for a few frames) must happen late enough to allow Gief to re-jump but early enough so that, if the jump attack connects, the motion doesn't pre-buffer a running grab when you land (which will come out instead of the crouching short). So the actual input is...

j.HK, immediate 540 motion ending at up-forward (held), KKK, cr.LK... Exploit whichever option you ended up with (for Ultra 2, hold forward to catch the back dash. For a block, tick throw them for not back dashing).

Often you will have a huge window for error when option selecting with someone like Ryu but that is not the case here. This is even more true for the cr.LP variation @1:01. In this case you're exploiting the fact that a cr.LP can be chained well into it's active frames. So much so, that if you time it correctly and it whiffs, you can use those frames for an instant air Ultra2. The input for that variation is...

cr.LP, 540 motion ending at up-forward (held), KKK (this will either activate ultra or chain a st.LK), st.LK... At this point you can react to whichever option you got.

Transcript:

A. Showing the basic set-up vs backdashes, ex.chicken wing, ex.headstomp, ex.devilsreverse, ex.headbutt and ex.messiah kick.

B. Showing a corner only set-up from a cr.LP. If Yun blocks or is hit, you will remain on the ground and combo, if he backdashes you get instant air Ultra2. This is less practical and more difficult than the standard set-up.

C. A variation that leads directly into a tick > SPD. Without a block string. You can actually do whatever you like after the j.HK even after inputting the os. This is a safer option if you don't have the timing perfect as it will avoid the unintentional running grab/SPD.

Interesting option select!

You will have to land, and jump again, in order to get the option select, so you're going to be negating any 'safe' jump. Anyone with a good DP type reveral is probably gonna win out. Still, I think it's a good option for people who are constantly going to try and get out of there, which against gief is probably quite a lot!

I suppose if you know someone is safe jumping you're going to have to make a decision as to if they're just straight safe jumping or option selecting ultra 2 - That's a decision I wouldn't want to make!

I miss Fanta Madness, but I think that was only ever available in certain mainland european countries. Each time I read "jaffa cakes" now my brain tells me that someone's misspelling joffo's username and I have to work it out all over again. I read in the Dark Souls thread that there is a weapon you can use to do dragon punches, and you can combine this with fire magic to do flaming dragon punches. Gonna go find that. I already have a hadouken spell and am getting quite adept at knocking big dudes over and then landing a meaty heavy attack. I don't think the game has crossups, though, and I suck at the option selects - took me two hours to pick a starting character class.

Can't think of a better place to ask this - Should I take a job in Aldi if I'm offered it or will it be shit?

Do you have any other jobs? Have you considered sports betting?

I worked at a theme park moving boxes of stuff around and stacking counters and cooking stuff for two summers and it was pretty terrible. You gotta get those dollars somehow though.

Adventureland led me to believe that that's actually the best job. I have been hoodwinked.

Back to soft drinks, during my Amsterdam trip I did develop a taste for Blackcurrant Fanta, which sadly isn't available here. Oh, and Chocomel. Chocomel is the greatest. Being obliged to buy a drink at every coffee shop meant that I put away a ridiculous amount of the stuff and would still buy more now if I could. Beautiful ice cold out of a can, and equally great heated up with some whipped cream on top.

Oh, this week's cross counter live is good. Killer Kai is a fine guest, the Seasons beatings top 5 moments were well chosen and it's worth a watch if only for the awesomeness that is TWOTECKS.

Down back scrub.

I don't have any job at the moment no, which is kinda nice in lots of ways, just not financially. I think it's that niceness that's making me reluctant. Oh well, we'll see how it goes I suppose, it's only up the road too.

It does pay quite well apparently.

I might try to FADC into a lottery win.

 this made me laugh more than is entirely sensible for a man of my years. bravo.

after watching a lot of Season's Beatings i'm torn between sticking with AE or bailing onto MvC3. Marvel is tremendous fun but is a posh button mash and a headache to remember setups, whereas AE has the depth and reward but is a ballache to remember setups.

Sorry. I'm stupid. Can some kind soul please link me to the good shit from Seasons Beatings? Top 16 or 8 in AE, top 8 in Marvel something like that. I've still managed to avoid the results!

If you start here you should get the top of each of those brackets across parts 1, 2 and 3. You may also wish to track back through the archives at the bottom for the team battles from the previous day - the MVC3 "good vs evil" team match was awesome.

Edit: would help if I added the link - http://www.twitch.tv/teamsp00ky/b/297660415

I've been watching the super turbo seasons beaings tournament. Damdai's super turbo Hawk is absolutely terrifying. It's amazing that 20 years on people have only just found out that T.Hawk is an unstoppable bastard of a character with ludicrous option selects (option select 360 or dragon punch ffs!). I hope it doesn't take as long for 2012 hawk to be found to be amazing.

Some good street fightin' against Goemon and Donut yesterday eve, on the 3rd Strike version of Street Fighting. If I fall for Goemon's Oro mp juggle cross under reset one more time I will laugh and laugh until I faint. Also, Donut somehow always, always, always alternates between low attacks and UOH in such an order that I never fail to get hit by all of it. I'd kill for an SRK FADC.

Also, Haggs, a reliable source (JLM) tells me that the reason Hawk's SPD option select is so effective is that it has no whiff animation in Super Turbo, so there's pretty much no risk in attempting it. Madness.

It's a ridiculous thing to have. I think it would be best if Damdai (or whoever discovered it) just kept using it without telling anyone it exists. I wonder how long it would have taken to spot that. Also... is it possible to escape, at all? You can't backdash or anything. Invincible reversals?

Apparently Japan discovered it a while ago but it was before the days of widely available match footage, so Americans would be mystified as to why T. Hawk was rock bottom on their tier lists but not so in the Japanese ones.

The fact that they're all so hard to do and that T. Hawk has plenty of other match up issues etc. means that he's still not popular and only considered middle tier, but Damdai and others have shown that if you get all this stuff right in tournament then you will be unstoppable.

The crouching jab - > SPD option select is inescapable without punishment as long as the T. Hawk gets it right. If you block his crouching jab then your options are to get thrown or do an unsafe reversal, which he can punish with another SPD.

The only reason T. Hawk isn't completely unbeatable is that you have to initially create the situation and that these set ups are really high execution.

The safe jump DP optiion select is great too because T. Hawk'a uppercut actually beats Ryu's.

Apparently all the Hawk OS and Safe jump set ups are harder to do against Ken because his DPs push back further on block and become active earlier. You can still pressure him safely but he can use uppercuts to push you back and reset the situation.

Hawk's cross up set ups are absolutely filthy as well. It's all covered in the first episode of Super Turbo Saturdays:

Honda's Ochio throw also doesn't have a whiff animation, which means that if Honda is played correctly it is literally imossible to tick throw him. He can buffer the Ochio throw whilst blocking and then piano release the buttons during your block string. If you stop at any point then you get Ochio'd, and if you do anything unthrowable then he just continues blocking.

Page 2? Again?

I couldn't watch any seasons beatings due to it not running on the iPhone. Sadness. I'm going to root around YouTube for what I can find though.

Also, I can't get Xian saying 'salty salty Air Con Man' out of my head. I love Xian's accent.

episode 2 of st saturdays has about ten minutes more hawk at the end where they cover one more option select that he has. Basically you do an SPD motion, starting and ending in down-back, then from the down-back you go to down forward and press punch. I think the numberpad inputs would be like 14789632123. Essentially what you're just done is feed the game the inputs for both the SPD and the uppercut, so if the opponent is in a throwable state then hawk will throw them, if not and since he has no whiff animation, then he will do the uppercut instead. But I think once they're in this loop there is basically no way out of it whatsoever.

Anyway, he didn't win the tournament with Hawk, he won it with old ken by absolutely butchering tokido's vega. It was quite something .
