There's more than one way to play it. [shrug] It's a lovely looking game in the flesh (KI)

Anyone notice there is an announcement from Tekken's producer Harada today?
Normally I would just say its new Tekken stuff but there's no Tekken play at all today, in fact he's coming on just before USFIV.
Could this be info on Tekken X Street Fighter?
Would've been nice if it was TxSF but it's going to be this..

FI-YAAAAAAH, FI-YAAAAAAAAH.

I don't get why melee had this sudden ramp in popularity over the past 2 years. Such an odd game to see on the main stage of Evo, and really showing its age visually...

No, this is not a "Smash isn't a fighting game" post, given that

it's technically a deeper game than injustice is.

and that's just from the movement alone.

Oh, as for the Harada announcement:

I ADORE Tekken, I used to dismiss it for some reason as a kid. Something about it not being a 2D fighter. But over the past few years, I've really come to love the game. It just suits the way I love to play fighting games, so much emphasis on mind-games, the neutral game and conditioning.

But for the love of god, I hope Tekken 7 is a stripped back version of Tekken.

It's too deep now, the wall is too big for new players. T7 NEEDS to be far more simple. No bounds, no rage management, just gut the damn game and start anew.

I'm old enough to remember the original and it wasn't great either really, all canned combos and memorisation, while somehow remaining shallow.

Why are these people cheering smash bros? I do not get this at all. It's like seeing a stadium of people cheering Kirby's pinball or something.

Nah, Tekken Revolution was on PS3, F2P and had pay-to-win elements but it was still a fighting game. I never tried it though. Also, I dunno how much VGChartz can be trusted but Tekken seems to have been more popular in the west, even back in the PS1 days, as far as console sales are concerned. Maybe it's still big compared to other fighting game franchises in arcades though.

Tekken as a whole is still the best selling fighting game franchise worldwide though. I think Tekken Tag Tournament 2 might have sold horribly though. Even though it was excellent.

Tekken 3 is still the second best selling fighting game ever, behind Smash Bros Brawl.

Yeah, there's a free to play version of Tekken (Tekken Revolution) on the PS3, but yeah, Tekken is still massive in Japan/Korea, to the point where there are sticks that are modified to increase the ease of "Electric Wind Godfists" on the Mishimas.

Tekken Rev is worth a go, it's very much Harada's playground... I wonder, given what was put into Tekken rev recently (A character that uses fireballs), I really do wonder if Tekken 7 will include a couple of SF chars for their part of the deal. Because let's be honest, the further they get away from recognition and association with SFxT, the better!

I so do not understand Smash. Literally, I can not comprehend what is going on. BlazBlue, a game I have never played, makes sense because of my familiarity with Street Fighter based games. Smash is a mystery to me, one I do not have any interest in to solve.

Smash is weird in the sense that it looks so simple, yet getting any sense of mastery over it seems illogical. That is my take on it anyway.

Then again I want to see Power Instincts make a come back, only because one of the Golden Girls is in it.

I'd love to see (a) PowerStone at EVO 2015.

Regarding Smash, no. I am too old for fighting games (my reactions are just not there any longer), I have no friends to play locally and it is not the game that appeals to me.

I've never been in touch, I'm more clu de sac than street.

I'd like to see Power Stone make a return, I'm sure there would be some serious hype moments but Capcom never really built on the franchise apart from a PSP release.

They ran a poll for a game to be included as a special tournament at EVO last year (or was it the year before?) and Smash Bros Melee won it. Probably down to it having a bigger fanbase and selling far more than the majority of fighting games. The viewer count was likely high enough to draw in more sponsors and justify its official inclusion. Nintendo now officially sponsoring tournaments where they'd previously shied away from the competitive side of the game probably helps too.

It's probably my second least favourite EVO tournament to watch after Killer Instinct but I love the game a lot. I played Melee for hundreds of hours. Maybe close to 1000, almost always with 3 or more people just as obsessed with as I was. The Wii U smash Bros is going to be wonderful if they manage to make the online work.

Smash has a large player base for a load of reasons not just the Nintnedo appeal. I can't do it justice, just watch the youtube documentary The Smash Brothers if you want to learn about why this game became so big.

If I do have to put it into words however a lot of stated reasons are the damage system, the speed of the game, the fact that you have completely control over the character. It's an incredibly open game and the amount of things you can pull off in the game is pretty crazy, the more people play it the more ways they find the push and break the game in ways that were not intended.

While 4 player was pretty fun, I much prefered the one-on-one nature of Powerstone "one". Anything to see chair throwing outside a paris cafe again.

The people playing smash, what's with all the e-sports uniforms? Very few are keeping it real with this. Once again, making them look out of place with everyone else at evo. You don't need to wear a football top, you ain't working out.

I have to admit, going best of 5 in smash bros is overkill. You are talking on average 20-30 minutes a match.

It's even worse than that, it's a best of 5, where each match is a best of 7.

Absolutely crazy.

Smash Bros had a big underground community for a long time and they were desperate for the game to become mainstream so now it has they are over doing it as much as they can. These guys want to make a living out of this.

I hate Smash Bros so fucking much I'm tempted to dedicate the rest of my life to building a time machine so I can send armies of Terminators back through time to kill everyone who's had a hand in making it a success, it just takes so bloody long and it's so bloody boring and these commentators are so bloody dull and unhype and it's never going to finish, oh god.

I just wanna see the SFIV finals but it's gonna be 6am at this rate, if we're lucky :(

Edit - thank fuck, it's finally over

I think smash is a great game but they really have gone overboard with how it is done. Pixelbark said it best, a best of 5 where each match is a best of 7. Like think about it, Blazblue final before was best of 5, each match was best of 3, each round in the match had a 90 second timer meaning a match would likey go 25 minutes maximum (if player take time out like they did in todays final) and that is a extreme case..

Smash brothers is a best of 5 for a best of 7 match which has a 8 minute timer. 5 times 8 is 40 minutes. if losers bracket player wins you basically have a rugby match.
