Ultra Street Fighter IV

Cheers, fixed it now. I think. I am not good at things.

He was quite determined to take a game, but he was mostly just enjoying trying out his new character against most of the cast and trying to figure out what was what. As I say, even though it eventually turned into the quest for 100 wins I was coaching him during many of the games (at his request, I hasten to add!). By the last ten I was playing very conservatively because he kept going for hard reads with ultras and doing whatever else he could to get big chunks of damage and deny me the streak. We went to get food after and I was reassuring them that I have taken some savage beatings from absolutely terrible players whilst trying to learn Poison. If you switch away from your trusty main you do need to be prepared to lose to players who would otherwise have no chance against you and to go on massive losing streaks at times. I've been playing the game for much much longer than he has and have more knowledge of both the characters and the way the game works in general, but if he picked his main it wouldn't have been nearly as one sided and I made sure he knew that I knew that because I felt pretty awful by the end! I did also point out that if he still wanted to main Yang after those 100 straight losses that maybe he has a future with the character. He basically ended up speed-running his first couple of weeks of learning the character, and that fact makes me even more annoyed that there is STILL no quick rematch button for two player endless battles. The standard of play worldwide would improve so, so much if they put that option in, but alas it seems it's reserved for pretty much every other fighting game that has online play and not this one.

I may challenge him to a FT100 in future to let him redeem himself using his main, or perhaps a few months down the line when he has a better grasp of Yang.

Jellum, you are a monster. A pleasantly agreeable monster though as it was very nice to get some games earlier after spending so very long in the PC wilds. I'm sad you can't return as I've just discovered some really disgusting stuff you can do with Rolento, and I need to share. Guess I better work on some setups for when you get another xbox!

Also, check out 4:38:50ish to witness Ryan Hart biting my style in last week's WNF.

Dang, yeah I need Rolento practise too as there is nobody using him locally. Was pretty funny how it all came back to me in a flash. Knocked down in the corner by Sagat, my internal monologue goes:

"Watch for the overhead"

"Wait, it's imp"

"Wait for the low short, THEN watch for the overhead!"

The fear of being Imped is so real.

Wait, I just realised I can get back on. I am an idiot. Will need to download AE again but I forgot that ultra is on my hard drive as well and I just need to be signed in to the correct account to play it. I could have been playing this whole time and now it's all late and such. Lame.

I went on tilt so hard last night after winning my first few ranked matches. Just like, the biggest slide in history.

I'm not giving up on Decapre though, even if her matches vs. any kind of grappler are awful.

I BELIEVE.

I think a key part of Yang's game is convincing your opponent to respect you as quickly as possible, so I can easily believe you'd lose 100 games as Yang if your opponent was just fully confident that they were better than you. You have to be able to demonstrate that you will punish every misread severely, and that even if they guess right on your resets then you can keep them in the mixup consistently. Without that then they'll just reversal/backdash everything and out-damage you, but with it they'll hesitate and get taken apart.

In unrelated news I went 15-3 the other night against a friend who used to play Akuma and now plays Yang. Rufus confirmed for worst dive kick character. Alistarr confirmed for stealth nerfed in Ultra.

Air throw might work in some situations, and nj.HP and backwards j.HP aren't necessarily appalling. In others I think focus backdash might be your best option. She doesn't have a button you can just anti air with - it's definitely one of her big weaknesses. St.LP might work against speculative divekicks, dhalsim teleports, that kind of thing? Maaaybe close st.MP in some weird situations? I bet you end up getting far st.MP when you don't want it, though.

Abd ultra 2, of course.

Huge thanks to the lovely JLM and imp for letting me join their lobby and indulge in fightings. I'm still scrubby as heck but it was great fun nevertheless. :)

Notes from yesterday:
- Everyone has a better Juri than me, in that they do more than jump-back, fireball, divekick. I don't think I actually played anyone's Juri but the stuff I saw was ace, and has only further convinced me to drop her in favour of a new main. :P
- Had one or two ace matches with imp including a Poison/Ibuki match where I was desperate to keep away from that whip and was too scared to do anything more than Kazegiri or crossup kunai attempts, until I totally crumbled in the third round and killed myself.
- That JLM comprehensively destroyed me when we were matched up in the rotation goes without saying. Combos up the wazzoo.
- I really like Decapre's "hands" - my name for just mashing punch - and I do it after pretty much everything. Teleport-divekick into hands. Ultra into hands. Hands into hands. I want to use it in every match even if I'm not playing Decapre. I want to do Blanka Ball into Decapre hands.
- T. Hawk vs imp's Hugo was also great fun. I was trying to be sensible with some of Hawk's better standing normals, but a few questionable red focuses and several dozen daft busters saw me lose the later rounds fairly quickly. I also slipped into "just do it" mode when I'd cornered Hugo and attempted sixty Tomahawk Busters, which is never a good thing to do against imp.
Street Fighter!
EDIT: also, I'm really glad I bothered to get the GwG download of Super SFIV AE. No more disc hunting! :)

I've had the most luck with jump back HK or speculative airthrows, but she definitely gets bullied all to hell by divekicks.

~Stabbyhands is the best though, Quazi is right, the EX version pushes people a mile into the corner, and if you're on Point you get an Ultra Totally Not Yoga Catastrophe to juggle.

Imp, now you've got the one hit of LK rising jaguar sorted in the corner you should do this:

You can do the reset against anyone but apparently it's only Hugo where you can make the high/low options both loop back to the reset.

Had some fun, wild games against Iggypops' Guile using Hugo earlier. Got totally demolished if I dared to focus up close and he was confidently punishing any blocked claps I dared risk. Hugo's EX Lariat through Sonic Hurricane was hilarious, if suicidal. Was trying to get a feel for which buttons are best when jumping in; j.mp seemed to have an interesting angle. j.HK seems to extend Hugo's hurbox so far back he'll get hit by yesterday's Sonic Booms.

Also, I expected a wee pick up in thread activity from new mans getting the game free on Xbox Live. :(

OH! Also! Does anyone with a Wii U who doesn't own NSMBU want my copy of NSMBU? It's excellent!

Ultimate Atomic Custard

That's all I can hear now! :)

Anyone else notice that Honda's Super has Honda yell out "Oooh! You're so gay!"

Bison is sponsored by "Subaru!"

Cammy definitely exclaims "Spiral Bubble!"

And Seth's inexplicable "Squeaky Boom!"

This is awesome, explaining a lot of why Skullgirls works as it does. Love everything about that game apart from actually playing it.

MikeZ <3

Mike Z used to have great Makoto in 3S. Nice to see him using the ol' channel for 3S videos in his talk

Wow. Don't watch or click if you are tracking all the King if New York matches I guess? There should be a video there, posting from my ipad sometimes makes it look like there isn't for me for some reason.
