Ultra Street Fighter IV

I don't wanna get too wanky but I feel like Rose, as a character, is a moderating influence on the FGC sometimes. Like, you can act like a twat in stream chat but if Rose wouldn't approve of it, you've probably gone too far. Rein in that psycho power, dude.

She can be a little dismissive though. I get the impression that in life she's been shat upon and sometimes takes it out on other people. She no doubt hates herself for it too.

You don't need to be a psychic to see that without appropriate help she'll soon be sitting in a terrible hotel room cradling a shotgun after a few too many babychams.

I will be back on Xbox Live next week btw. I could have opted for PS3 but a sub renewal and some space points has got to be more cost-effective than a new old games box.

Did I say next week? I meant today. Now that I have a sub and some credit I'm all hyped for next week.

Renewing my subscription also means that I get to download Dark Souls - I picked that up before in the Game fire sale and got bodied by some ghosts about fifteen minutes into the game. So I look forward to that happening again.

I performed the switch to the Steam version of Super Street Fighter IV and the achievements don't carry across immediately but rather when you perform an action related to it. I won a single ranked match and unlocked ten achievements at once!

The Ken Army has returned to Sf4 AE 2012 on PC.

Combined with most people not realising their mics are turned on, I've been creasing up listening to some of the new fish.

Weird, I've spent most of the day writing about Flowchart Ken.

So I am going to E3 next week and have been entered into something called an Editor Elimination Exhibition for Ultra. Press tourney, in other words.

You’ll also get a hands-on coaching session with Capcom’s resident Street Fighter expert, Peter “Combofiend” Rosas, to learn the ropes of high-level play, ultimately leading up to an Ultra Street Fighter IV match where you’ll compete for bragging rights and a special prize. This will be a friendly competition amongst peers, with the added adrenaline rush of a true pro experience.
True pro experience? I've played Jason dozens of times.

I went 0 and 2 at SFO yesterday. What a way to send off AE2012! On the plus side I got 2nd in the 16 man Mario Kart tournament. Dropping SF4 and playing MK8 as my main game now innit.

Nate! I am very excited for you. Imagine having to resist the temptation to give him a big cuddle.

You can ask him why, instead of making it do either a little damage or be safe when successfully connected, they decided to take away Dan's crouching taunt meter gain on hit.

#combofriend

Also, I am Home Alone this evening so I will probably Street Fight a little after I do some chores and eat a pre-packaged Tesco spaghetti carbonara for one*.

And! Mario Kart 8/Sandra Bullock crossover:

*It says it serves two. In exceptional circumstances.

I am also very jealous of Nate.

Oh, and despite me turning in my worst ever performance at any tournament I've ever been to, yesterday's SFO monthly was a lot of fun. White Daigo, OverMostHeads and Fuzzy were their usual beastly selves, Benners played better than he has in months, plus we had a guest appearance from BTM Gunslinga. He is the number 1 Guy on Xbox Live but he's still only been to a handful of offline tournaments. He did well but he has some online tendencies that cost him and he wasn't quite ready for OMH. There was no stream, but all of the top 8 matches were recorded with commentary. I'd recommend watching them if we ever get them uploaded as I think a top three with Whaigo, OMH and Fuzzy is about as good as you could ask for at a UK tournament in the absence of Ryan Hart. Oh, and Ghost played a FT5 money match against a certain Bradford player who everyone thinks is a bit rubbish but who has been over-achieving massively at tournaments of late and is getting a bit cocky about it. Thankfully Ghost won. I don't know if we'd have ever, ever heard the end of it if that had gone the other way. Also Ghost is completely penniless at the moment, so he had to get someone to front the money for him on the understanding that he was definitely going to win anyway and therefore wouldn't really need it. Heh.

It's nice that SFO is still steadily running at least a 28 man bracket for AE every month now, and usually managing to get 32 or higher. This time we had people from London, Teeside, Merseyside and all over Yorkshire in attendance. Also the Super Turbo scene keeps getting bigger. There are always at least half a dozen players in the venue who are only there for Super Turbo, plus a lot of the AE folks enter both games for the fun of it. They've managed 16 man brackets for the past couple of months, which really is a tremendous effort. Their dedication in bringing the massive CRT TVs and CPS2 boards with them is to be admired, and it's great that there are all these GGPO killers coming to their first offline events now that ST at SFO is an established monthly thing. I played some of the ST monsters in casuals and got thoroughly destroyed, but I did manage to land Cross up MK - > cr. jab - > cr. jab xx MK up kicks - > Juggle roundhouse upkicks with Dee Jay. If I land anything resembling a combo in ST I am a happy man. I think I might enter the tournament next month. As a bonus, it adds so much to a Streetfighter event to have Super Turbo as the main source of background noise. Nothing sounds more arcade-y and fighting game-y than that. Ti-gerrrr, Ti-gerrr, Ti-gerrrrrr uppercut. Love it.

Plan for Ultra week goes:

1) Wednesday session at SFO House #2
2) Thursday team Jellistar fightings/lab-a-thon at Casa de Jellum, potential trip to SFO House #1
3) Friday more team Jellistar fightings and experimentings.
4) Saturday Dunno. I expect I'll have a bash on that Ultra Streetfighter IV game at some point though.
5) Sunday Ultra launch party at Brewery Tap in Leeds.

Yeah, do it. The Edge hill Uni guys all came down in one car yesterday. Gunslinga joined them at the last minute and just chucked them a fiver for petrol. There will defiitely be some SFO mans at the Edge Hill tourney on Saturday. Was thinking about going myself as I can get a lift. Will see what folks are saying over the next few days.

Despite the bravado Gun seems to be a pretty decent bloke. He absolutely destroyed me with his Guy pretty much the only time I got to play him though.

Be cool if you could make it down, I think there's 20+ in attendance.

My current plan for the week, as I'm stuck in bastard Cheshire.

Tuesday, take delivery of PS3, start downloading Ultra

Wednesday, Thursday, flail pathetically at learning new characters.

Friday, try to remember how to play Tekken Tag 2

Saturday, get bodied at EHU

Sunday, Liverpool craft beer expo :)

Nice plan. The Edge Hill tournament was fun last time, though SF Nightfighter's Juri is the only player I've played who made me genuinely salty in casuals. Ended up staying much later than planned because I needed to beat him convincingly before leaving. I am a child. Yeah, Gunslinga's alright if you get past the bluster, and both his Guy and Dudley are very strong indeed. That said, it's pretty obnoxious in casuals when he'll get hit by something dumb, pause the game and ask his opponent why they did it. But yeah, he doesn't really mean anything by it, he's just convinced that he's the best player in the world. I don't think this'll be his last SFO visit by any means.

A couple of beatdowns should sort him out :) One thing I noticed was he adapts really quickly. FSM of that infamous video against Ghandi fame did well against him in a tourney we ran, and by the third round he had him downloaded.

Theres a good Oni player called Matty who should be along and maybe Raz whose got a pretty beastly Vega.

We're all pretty well versed in the Oni match up at SFO now. Whenever I sit and play a set with OMH it usually ends up about 10-5 to him. I can always take rounds and games but he usually comes out on top. After that, any other Oni I fight seems easy by comparison. On the Dragonman account we routinely use G0dhim's Oni for free points, and that guy has 4,500PP and around 17kbp with Oni. We have a Vega player now in Narcissist I, but yesterday was only his second SFO appearance. It takes a while to get used to a Vega doing his standing short/kara grab stuff because most of the online Vega players are all about silly gimmicks and random EX Barcelona. We don't have any Fei Longs though, which is why we all lost to Fei at the last EHU event. He'll be a lot easier to manage in Ultra though, thankfully. God I hate that guy.

I played against OMH a week or two ago online, it went..badly for me.

Good Vegas are a nightmare, until they get knocked down and mangled. Took me by surprise just how insane the reach on his Kara grab is.

Fei is just absurdly sold, and you don't get to press buttons ever against him, but those nerfs he's taking, oof!

My tournament games yesterday, for those interestered and to make up for a lack of full write up:

JLM (Rose) 0-2 MBA Fuzzy (Cammy)

Pretty standard. Tough first round draw and a terrible match up for Rose. That said, I am annoyed at myself for giving away the first game for nothing. I was pressing buttons and getting counter hit by EX dive kicks all day. Second game was much, much closer but I'd already run out of rounds to try and pull it back. Focus, focus back dash, jump back fierce and EX soul throw all started working in game two, plus I hit him with the Louffy corner mix up and got that lovely free damage. I think with a few more sets I could take some wins over Fuzzy, especially as Ultra is almost upon us and Cammy is getting some lovely nerfs.

JLM (Rose) 0-2 Domihy (Guile)

Gutted about this one. Domihy is the player I've played most often in tournament at SFO, and not so long ago I figured out exactly what I need to do to beat him with Chun. I also coach other players and tell them how to beat him when they ask, usually with great success. However, the problem here was that he finds Rose exceptionally annoying to fight against, and as such he plays completely differently and starts flash kicking like a mad man. I did not adapt to this at all and ended up losing by completely failing to block anything ever. Terrible stuff. I don't know if I should relearn the match or simply go back to Chun against him because I know it's his kyryptonite. Rose is a better choice on paper, but in terms of playing against the player instead of the character it feels like a bad call.

Back on topic:

Food people from The London! That girl I like who lives in my house has had to go overnight for a work thing in London and is staying in the Strand area; any foodie recommendations for a quick yet excellent munch? Probably relatively late evening.
