Ultra Street Fighter IV

They've given gief his safe LP green hand back. This means that the only thing he needs save meter for now is ex hand rfc ultra 1. Yooooooo.

Oh I missed that one! So now it's ridiculously fast AND nice and safe?

People seem to think Gief will struggle in Ultra but it just doesn't seem very likely.

Rolling Thunder goes two full screens and resets your opponents console, yeah?

Pretty much!

Would Rufus be able to get anything of worth from red focus cancelling his far standing medium punch or would the scaling from the chained lights beforehand it make it pointless? Would his wee stubby leg even reach from that range? I guess hp x hp.GT RFC hp x hp.GT might be good for damage and extra corner carry.

I wonder what SFxT style footsies might come from red focus cancels? Ryu could stick out cr.mk from out of range and tap for red focus and if Dudley dares to approach with machine gun blow he's getting crumpled. And no doubt countless other scenarios.

Rufus' focus has shorter range than the st.MP, but even without RFC he'll be able to st.MP xx EX tornado FADC into tings, though, so that's not so bad - same meter but probably just a bit less damage because you don't get the hit of the focus (but then you also don't get the scaling of the focus). Yes, HP tornado RFC into things should work, but it's a lot of messiahs to throw away! I guess it'll be useful in the same places EX tonado FADC is useful, but just give you extra damage and carry for the same meter.

I'm terrified of Zangief confirming st.LK xx EX green hand into RFC ultra. RFC is probably going to be a big deal for a bunch of characters. The other interesting thing about it, alongside your footsies point, is how the meter game might change for characters who can get good use from RFC but also rely on meter for, say, their only decent wakeup option, or saving it for a super which punishes a bunch of stuff.

I don't think rufus will benefit from red focus very much, due to his profound, sweaty obesity and disgustingly proportioned limbs. I'm kind of thinking (hoping{dreaming}) that in ultra he's going to be somewhat mediocre anyway, due to the overall system changes and his damage nerfs.

Red focus will definitely be a boon for guile and gief. I think bipson maybe as well, since he can use RFC from something like scissors to confirm into an ultra. It'd depend on scaling, but it'll still up his damage. However he'd not be able to use ex for escapes any more. I was thinking maybe vega too, but he needs it for ex fba. It might be good for ken, too, since his damage is fairly piddling, and it's surely better for him to get cinematic U1 as opposed to juggling it. I think that having 3 bars will become the new having 2 bars for a lot of characters. I hope that someone submits that to Private Eye.

Akuma can cancel far standing fierce as well! That's quite big I think?

I think Vega will want to be using RFC, but like you say it'll take time to figure out his best meter options for certain. Akuma lost his demon-cancellable sweep so I guess it's fair he gets something else. More than the RFC stuff I want to know if he ends up having any setups that allow him to confirm a delayed wakeup - I was thinking maybe late jump into normal crossup if they rise normally bur divekick if they delay?

Also I know it's been a while since you played but Rufus has been mediocre since AE came out. System changes shouldn't hurt him too much, I don't think - noteworthy improvements to a number of zoning/footsie characters will probably make life interesting for him, though, and his current hard matchups are probably all getting worse (and his own buffs won't help much against the big bodies of Sagat and Gief).

I'm not sure that akuma needed much else? He was pretty complete anyway. the cl.mk thing is good for him since he can get guaranteed tatsu combos hit confirmed on crouching mens.

Rufus will lose some of his ambiguous divekick setups, at least, which will hurt his mixup game a bit.

I still feel for abel in this version, though. He's going to be complete shit.

Hakan got some major buffs. He's got worthwhile non-oiled SPD's, his fwd+hk knocks down unoiled, cr.mp is cancellable, neutral jump mp floats like angled jump mp does, fwd.mp is now +0 on hit (mixups!) and he has a crossup. Unoiled hakan is less terrible than he used to be, which is definitely going to help him.

I think Vega will want to be using RFC, but like you say it'll take time to figure out his best meter options for certain.

His two big meter uses are going to be super cancel from Rolling and Request For Comments Ultra, which is a pretty big deal when the character previously only had an Ex FBA gague with 4 stock. The biggest new thing for me with Vega would be the crossup LK, the lack of a remotely reliable crossup this far limited his offensive options to "poking" and "more poking" when I play him at least. Close MK giving him a frame trap (I never liked close HP much for the purpose) seems nice as well. Didn't hear about either of those two things before this latest list.

Absolutely loving Viper's new super input, the amount of times that damn super activates when I'm mashing out HP feint HP is miserably high. Her other changes seem minor to me. Maybe you can poke better with LP TK now I guess. I thought I read about heinous sounding burn kick nerfs a while ago, they're not in the list so hopefully they just got rolled back.

Interesting list on the whole though. It seems like the scope of the changes makes a lot of characters more dangerous in ways they weren't previously, so clearly there'll be a lot of habits to break from AE2102!

Also good games to everyone I played recently, which from memory is DC, Goemon, and JLM. I don't post much, so my definition of recently there covers the last month.

So that Assassin's Fist thing is up now:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZLTS4u9M_2r89MGqgDNGGxQfmLuhtxqU

Trailer blurb:

Witness the origin of the legendary fighting characters in Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist!!

As Ryu & Ken's training in the Ansatsuken style of Martial Arts intensifies, their Master Gōken is forced to revisit the dark secrets and tragedy of his past that culminated in the loss of his brother Gōki.

Watch all 12 episodes - the full series - right here on Machinima on May 23!!

EDIT: it's actually not bad. Some nice references and bits that I don't want to give away, and the choreography and effects are great. It reminds me of Thousand Pounds' stuff a bit in terms of action shots and pans and slo-mo hype moments (although the story is mainly focused on Ansatsuken/Shotokan stuff, so no E. Honda, Blanka etc. :P )

As reluctant as I've been to renew my Gold sub it's got to be less expensive than buying a PS3, so I'll prolly go for the 360 version. Or Steam if I'm feeling particularly stingy. :P

EDIT: btw Assassin's Fist is good. Honest.

Goddamnit, Curtis just DM'ed me saying that XBL Gold is free for the weekend? Might be around if that's the case...

You around this evening? Let me know if you fancy a 3rd strike party (or any other kind of fighting game party too, of course!)

I should be available by about 10, I think - just trying to rustle up some actual dinner to go with my delicious coleslaw side-dish.
