Ultra Street Fighter IV

I've just never liked the cut of his jib. He did all the rebalancing for HDR and I guess caught some shit for it and has spent the intervening years criticising SFIV and 3SOE for various reasons, all of which felt to me like sour grapes because they hadn't asked *him* to help.

Also he is making/has made something called Chess 2 which I think tells you everything you need to know about the man, i.e. he has a very high opinion of himself and he can basically get fucked.

Oh, also, Street Fighter.

So I had a miserable time on 360 ranked yesterday. Went down from my standard 1100 PP to under 700, got it back to 780 or so with a decent win at the end.

Now, I did take some heart from the session because I felt I was getting better the longer I played, but I get on this so infrequently now that whatever execution I ever had has pretty much gone. Yes, I can do the odd combo still, but I am unable to react to what is happening in front of me. My brain knows what to do, but the hands are unwilling. I punished two blocked Sagat uppercuts with fireballs, for instance, when going for cr.HP x HP SRK.

So, what few successes I had came from not putting myself in a situation where I needed to react super quickly to something. So I concentrated on footsies and whiff punishing and dancing in and out of range. And I rather enjoyed it. The problem with this is that I play Ken, whose best footsie normal is used to close space rather than hold it, whose other normals are only so-so, and whose general style suits a mixup heavy approach that I don't think I really have anymore.

So! I am going to try and learn someone else. Any suggestions? Tempted to try Fei again but I've never been able to combo into rekkas and can't see that ever changing.

I mean, assuming you don't want to go full-zoning with a Dhalsim or a Sagat, someone like Balrog has decent footsies, good damage even without learning all the combos, and the tools either to keep someone at bay or apply pressure to them. His gameplan is also reasonably straightforward.

Bwahahahaha. Outstanding.

Balrog is (*spits*) a really good suggestion based on the requirements you've given. He's great at reaction whiff punishes and, what I think is extremely useful when you're rusty, has a consistent normal anti-air that very quickly becomes second nature and will get you loads of free damage against the perma-jumping ranked masses. It doesn't take long at all to learn to cr. fierce on reaction, and against half decent players it'll convince them to play a ground game against you and let you play the game in the way that you say you're enjoying the most at present. It has quickly become so ingrained in me using Rose that it's really hard to *not* do it when Sakura or some other stupid free jump-in character is leaping at me.

Also I feel your pain re: cr. normal xx DP motion. I am still terribly sloppy with those. Ken can get around it by doing close standing roundhouse xx DP as a punish instead. Does a bit more damage as well.

Oh, Imp, I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before or if you're already doing it, but when fighting Takkumakim (extremely salty, rage-mail sending 15k BP Ken player) a little while ago, I noticed that he was doing kara forward dashes! I didn't believe it a t first, then went into training mode and found that it's really easy to do, I think that might be the only thing I'd never tried to kara with Ken before. Kara dash into kara throw is the most absurd thing. The input is similar to doing a step kick dash cancel with Abel, except a bit faster obviously.

That is incredible news! I've just spent 10 minutes in the lab trying it and am a bit stumped to be honest. I'm not sure I can move the lever fast enough. These hands, they ain't gettin' any younger. :(

I just went and tried to do it myself and couldn't do it either. I may have to consult Ghost as we found a way of getting it consistently last time. Doing it as described above doesn't work at all, so I obviously have it wrong. I managed to get it once or twice by inputting forward, then forward and MK a split second apart. Still much more consistent to do a kara focus dash cancel to achieve the same effect though. Hmmm.

It was ages ago now unfortunately. Dragonman gets through a looot of fights per session. I have achieved the same distance with kara focus cancelling anyway, so that may have been what he was doing and we just made life more difficult for ourselves. Heh.

Here is what I just done did in the lab. Kara focus forward dash followed by a regular forward dash. You can do better than that if your timing and kara focus inputs are cleaner than mine, but it shows the difference it makes even after just five or ten minutes of messing with it:

Does anywhere take bets on EVO then? I know nothing about gambling and very little about who is really good at this game, so am confident I can win some 'dirty cash' this year.

I seem to recall Paddy Power was mentioned in years gone by? Or did I dream that?
