Hypespotting SFIV etc etc

Finals heartbreaker for Ryan Hart. Made a bad call when he was literally seconds away from resetting the bracket. He had spent the first few rounds getting blown up and had adjusted really well, and the bracket reset looked a dead cert.

Despite losing, Ryan really proving his quality, and Valmaster absolutely a worthy champion.

Chunners eh? Who'd have thought.

Great third place for OMH too.

Jellum and Alisitarr have left and my life has returned to normal with disappointing efficiency; I have a mug of tea and I'm watching Come Dine With Me. How awful.

Alistarr is just amazing at Rufus now, and Chun. And beards. And utterly top tier at creating businesses based around hard menthol candy puns ("A pothole repair business called 'Hole Smoothers'").

Jellum scored our only winning game of 3rd Strike, on stream no less. And he had a very good result in his group for AE. Plus he developed some wild Poison nonsense. She had a cancellable sweep in the build we played (No Decapre) but apparently she's already lost it. She can FADC her uppercut and juggle with any normal, leading to potential FADC cancellable normal to reset cancelled into EX overhead etc. Quite fun.

Dan's b+HK as anti air is very real. I like it. I always forget to hold back after a crossup though.

I'm so sad that there will be no towerfall in my life for a period of time in the future. I love that you chose a .gif featuring a double suicide, after all the crazy stuff that happened.

I made a quick list last night of things I wanted to post about, upon which I now have some time to expand. To whit:

AE footage starts at about 7:40:00. Ridiculous northern hype starts to build at around 8:37:00. Handsome man at about 2:30:30.

After playing USF4 I want to keep playing it. We all played a lot - there were six setups and there was plenty of opportunity to get a decent set of games in before giving someone else a turn. I didn't play much of the new characters but Jason and Joffocakes had that covered as far as Poison and Hugo were concerned. Poison looks like she'll be fun but not the best in the game. I beat the Capcom man's Gen in a FT3 with Rufus and got to show off the new far st.MP xx EX tornado combos (so good) and double ultra gimmickiness, and then lost to his Fuerte. Double Ultra seems really good now I've played it, and I really didn't think it was going to be worthwhile for more than a couple of characters when it was announced - now I feel like it might really change some matchups, though. It's that thing that people always say about balancing, how you give some characters more options than others and then try to balance it by giving the characters with fewer options more damage or more lifebar, but then the characters with the most/best options end up being the top tier characters anyway. I was picking wultra for Rufus vs Viper and just the threat of anti-air U2 makes her think twice about every delayed burn kick mixup on my wakeup, but I still have U1 for combos if I get the opportunity. I think that extra option is probably going to be worth more than the damage in more situations than first expected.

Rufus in USF4 seems fine. Wultra seems like it might be good for a couple of matchups (Viper, Akuma, maybe Fuerte/Gen/Guy etc) and U2 itself is much improved as anti-air. EX messiah kick not going over dudes is good. Target combo being ridiculously punishable on block is going to be a hard lesson to learn. I did it without confirming once and Dawgtanian just did his normal BnB to punish without any worry about getting the timing right. Depressing. But I guess I'll just have to learn to confirm it properly? I forgot to try the messiah kick enders for unsafeness. You can juggle with a LK messiah kick after j.HK now, but the spacing/timing seems quite specific and I'm not really sure it does much for you that snake strike didn't (which is massively easier to connect). Far st.MP xx tings is very nice. Throw doing less damage and ultras doing less damage are both something that will take some getting used to. I think he will survive the transition to USF4.

We went to a vegan pub and I got a lentil soup, a BLT sandwich and a plate of nachos with chilli and guacamole. It was excellent.

Joffocakes is an all-round excellent person to have around, especially if you're needing to know where you can get things in Glasgow. His home is awesome and it has a street fighter machine and many beverages and other nice things. Also I think his glasses are the perfect presciption for me, so given that I don't wear glasses I think I should probably go for an eye test. Thank you so much for putting us up and everything else, and thank your flatmate for putting up with us.

I loved watching all Joffo's tournament matches and hopefully not being too annoying with the coaching. He started a bit nervously but then settled in and started doing all sorts of lovely stuff. I think h even connected a crouching taunt at one point? Joffocakes seems to know everyone in Scotland - or rather they all seem to know him - because people kept walking past and remarking on how oh look here it was that Joffocakes. I was sad that my pool was running at the same time as JLM's so I missed all his fights and had nobody to coach me (JLM reportedly did well in his pool but missed out on top 32 by the narrowest of margins.). I played really, really poorly in tournament - I think partly because I didn't practice on the lag-free tournament setups before we started, having spent the morning playing USF4 on big LCD TVs, but mostly because I got really nervous and felt totally ill at ease. I guess I psyched myself out by wanting to play well. I lost to Janitor, Emersion, Metallic Mike and someone else I've now forgotten without landing a BnB once, despite getting plenty of divekick hits and suchlike. I beat a Ryu who is only just starting to play, an Ibuki who I basically sat and waited to anti-air and who said his main game was Soul Calibur, and Sprint's Makoto. I think the game against the Ibuki was my sixth and it was the first in which I hit my BnB cleanly, and I'm not sure how much that was just because my nerves were calming down and how much it was because I was adjusting to the setups, but after that my only match left was against Sprint and it seemed okay - a few errors still and some nervy play but nowhere near as bad as the other fights. So technically I went 3-5 in pools but I think at least one of the wins wasn't anything to be proud about. Still, it's all experience.

It's so different playing against a crowd of strangers in tournament to playing against pretty much anyone outside of tournament. It's like there's a whole separate part of the game that only exists when you're playing to keep yourself in the bracket. Either side of my tournament fights I played cleanly and comfortably against people I consider to be much better players than me. I need to work on the competitive side of it all if I'm going to attend more, ahem, competitions. But anyway, what I wanted to say was how interesting it is that the game feels so different in that setting.

Dong Dong. This is a 2-player minigame that's hidden away in the GBA WarioWare game that we've all got on our 3DSs, and I didn't know about it. It's amazing. As Jason remarked, give fighting game players any 2-player competitive game and they will not rest until someone has been exposed.

We played street fighter until about 3am each night. We played Marvel 2 this morning and tried to teach Joffocakes the ways of picking one joke character and two real ones. That game is so much fun.

Oh, and the tournament carried on even though we weren't in it any more. The top 32 was great, about which I will write some words in spoilers in case people want to watch the archives:

Aside from a quick break to play a bit of street fighter against one of the Leeds people, I spent most of top 32 running back and forth between whichever setups the TOs had called Leeds players to play at. I watched:

- SFO Ghost narrowly lose to Emersion's Vega (who murdered me in pools) having twice taken a solid lead, done the right thing and sat on it, but then ran out of patience and made one jump he didn't need to make and was killed for it.

- SFO InfernoKong fight well against Ryan Hart and lose off the back of one bad decision (walking in behind a LP sonic boom on Ryan Hart's wakeup when he could have thrown an EX boom and got a chip win) and two missed inputs (getting teleports which were punished instead of ultras which would have caught Sagat in his tiger shot recovery). He also played nervously and was doing a lot more cautious combos which reset to neutral rather than going for the shenanigans that are his staple against everyone else, but it was a really good match.

- White Daigo (Teesside) dismantle a C Viper player.

- SFO OverMostHeads narrowly lose to Ryan Hart immediately after the InfernoKong match, again in a close match.

- MetallicMike (Manchester I think?) losing to Andreas. I have to admit I felt less bad about losing to Mike after seeing him take a game from Andreas, though obviously I lost by playing badly as much as because he was playing well. But he really did play well against Andreas. After this match Andreas stood up, asked a question about Juri's st.HP not being throwable, listened to Mike's answer, nodded silently and immediately stalked off like some kind of street fighting robot. Data acquired; progressing to next opponent.

- ProFluke (from everywhere) losing to Andreas. He got murdered in the first game then nearly took the second but went for genuinely the least tricky reset anyone ever saw which let Andreas back into the game. It ended with him reacting too slowly (apparently because he hesitated too long while deciding what to do) to a Rufus focus attack allowing Rufus to dash to safety from an U2 that would have caught him if Luke had done it as quickly as he'd normally do it. Good match.

- SFO OverMostHeads playing out of his skin and dismantling the London monsters (and White Daigo before them, too). I haven't watched it back yet - is my memory playing tricks on me or did he really score a perfect on F-Word and Andreas and Problem X? (EDIT: No! It was just dizzies for days.) I can't really remember the matches in enough detail so you'll have to watch the archives but they were so, so good. The crowd banter was amazing, too - the Teeside/Manchester shouty folk chanting "look behind you" after a cheeky crossup slash hit, Ghost telling F-Word "you're not getting a neckbreaker, blad - try something else" amidst OMH's consistent beating of her cr.MP with his own buttons, Jason renaming OMH "OverMostLondonHeads". He seemed to have unblockables for every character and ludicrous gimmicks and on-the-fly combos that were part style, part telling his opponent that he was in their head and he wasn't leaving. The crowd were amazing and he just had this huge grin on his face the whole way through. Good stuff. Ryan Hart beat him having switched to Yun, so it was only Ryan he lost to, twice, in the whole tournament.

- Grand finals between Ryan Hart and Valmaster, which was something else. Valmaster is too good, but I'll leave that to Jason to talk about.

Such an excellent few days. Well done everyone. Let's all play this game together in person more often.

My girlfriend works at Broadway Cinema in Nottingham and apparently she noticed her SF loving friend browsing Rllmuk on his laptop. She's pretty sure it's this place because, well, 'rllmuk' isn't a word you confuse for anything else.

Yes! More Excellent Adventures, more KBrad and more of the blossoming KBrad/Infiltration bromance from ESGN. This is everything I wanted and more. I love how Infiltration has picked up exactly the right level of American FGC obnoxiousness and is all expressive and hilarious now. Good work that man.

Nah, there are plenty of folks who don't like him. Personally I think he can be very amusing and like that he doesn't take himself even the tiniest bit seriously. On ESGN he seemed to be the only player who couldn't quite believe he'd been flown out to Germany and paid to sit around and play videogames, and correctly concluded that he should have a right old laugh doing it. Easily the highlight of the series for me.

Ha, I'm working on it. I've also been asked to do a little write-up on the SFO players' efforts at the event for the shiny new SFO website, so I have lots of typing to do. I could easily write 5,000 words on Valmaster that would most likely end in a marriage proposal, but I'll try to rein myself in.
