Ultra Street Fighter IV

JLM

Recommended Posts

Did some fightins for the first time in ages last night, mainly as Cody. Definitely going to stick with him for the foreseeable. I mainly lost horribly because I was still in the Rose zoning mindset, but when I actually managed to go in, I did halfway decent. I stuffed two EX bird kicks with nj.hp, and actually used focus attacks. Fun.

Ranked is so stupid. I have about 20 people, all with 2,500PP+ who simply refuse to play me. If I join their game I'll get booted every time. This is people using Akuma, Cammy and even Honda! Are they really that scared of losing points? Ultra is out soon and everyone will be back at zero.

Idiots.

I seem to recall that. I can't fathom why I'd pick Balrog though as I'm awful with him. I seem to remember you winning though?

Never played Blazeblue. I think I'm on similar PP to you and, as mentioned, left Fei Long largely behind for the same reasons as you've dropped Cammy.

Gootecks and Mike Ross in any form is some of my favourite things to watch regardless of how good I am at this game.

Finally got a chance to play some, and just randomly got you in Ranked. would have pestered for some Endless Battle action but it's dinnertime!

Maybe they're Jedi.

(I have a couple of those dudes too - my favourite is the guy we know as Life McBeast, who hosts two player endless lobbies and kicks me after one game every time. It must be because Rufus is a bad matchup for his Sagat.)

Ooh this is exciting.

Group A:

Problem X and Samurai Drew the favourites. Poor Ricky from SFO will struggle there. His Sakura is solid but he's only recently started coming to SFO again after about 8 months off. Baptism of fire for him there.

Group B:

Milligano to win it, but I don't think Willo qualifying is out of the question if he plays at his best.

Group C:

OMH should take this comfortably. In fairness FSP and Hadoshrooms are the only other two I recognise, so if any of the rest of those guys are super good I may stand corrected.

Group D:

Would love to see Clangers make it but he has some tough match ups there, as T. Hawk always does. Can't see him beating Tricerabortion's Akuma for one.

Group E:

Incognitus is a strong T. Hawk, Chuck is a very solid Cammy. Don't know who the others are.

Group F:

Joffles! InfernoKong is Harry a/k/a White Poongko. Exceptional at Tekken but pretty beastly at SF4 as well. If he's playing at his best I'd have him as favourite to win. Muirtron has a very good Bison, though I don't think it's anywhere close to Milligano's. You have good Anti-Bison nonsense with Dan, use it! Carnage Princess plays Juri. She's very solid but I've found she's a bit *too* patient and respectful on her own wake up and is prone to non-legit pressure. Don't know who the others are. I think InfernoKong will be your hardest match but you should be able to get through unless Cardurosar or Alfie are secret killers.

Group G:

I only recognise Profluke and Techtun here. Techtun has a very capable Cody and ProFluke is of course one of the UK's strongest El Fuerte players. I'd expect Luke to go through but it's a bit of a silly prediction when I odn't know who four of the players are in the pool

Group H:

Group of death!!!!!11111!!!111 I am so hype that Valmaster is attending. Best Chun Li in Europe by a huge margin. I will be watching all of his games like the drooling fanboy I am. Fuzzy is the the UK's best Cammy, JustinXavier is strong with both Juri and Viper. Wiseblade is a strong El Fuerte player. Poor SFO Nympho. His Viper is progressing at a very impressive rate (self-proclaimed best Viper in Europe!) but I don't know if he's ready for that pool. Damn.

Group I:

I only know Zaus and TSCooler from this one, so tough to call. Zaus is very very good indeed, Tyson is hit and miss. No idea about the rest of those players.

Group J:

BigFool is obviously the favourite. ShaunJS is a decent Blanka from Teeside who I am still mad about losing to at SFO recently. Quaka is a rraggo Makoto from London. SFO Brylarke is our very own Ant, and is the most frustratingly inconsistent of players. He can Cammy anyone to death but can also lose to the worst players ever. He could easily beat Shaun and Quaka if he plays correctly. Don't recognise the other guys.

Group K:

Ryan Hart to win, obviously. Goukifafa has a very solid Balrog, no idea who the others are but I love the name Launchpad McQuack and wish him all the bestt.

Group L:

Shek is a very good Adon player who I was very fortunate to beat at Teesports. No idea who anyone else is in there.

Group M:

Allystah! Emersion is arguably the best Vega in Europe. Sprint plays Cammy with Makoto secondary, Mike plays Cammy with Juri secondary. I know you're familiar with the latter two and I reckon you can beat both of them. Not sure about the rest of the group but I think you can get out of it.

Group N:

Blaydon Ryu is White Daigo. He will win this pool.

Group O:

Hmm. Jinty's Ken is really really good, and at that Leicester tournament he completely destroyed Zaus in grand finals. May have to let Rose sit that one out! Greyhamme is a decent Gouken but not an unbeatable one. No idea who the other fellows are.

Group P:

Pass.

I wonder how many non pre-reg players there will be. I know that Ghost from SFO is one of them and I hope he doesn't end up in one of the other SFO players' pools as that would be the saddest thing. I'm happy they've done a good job of keeping us all separated so far though. Also that Me, Joffles and Allystah don't have to fight each other in pools!

Aye, that's a shame man. Still, I like your team's chances at Rival Scenes 2, so keep the form going til then! There's quite a long list of players who I'm sad can't make it. I will do my best to give a Rico Suave thumbs up if I get on stream for all the fallen homies.

Had a fun Dragonman session at Ant's house tonight. He ended up doing combos in training mode for pretty much the entire thing, so I took Dragonman from 2,300pp to 3,200 using Rose almost exclusively. I have added the Filipinoman Ultra 2 set ups to my repertoire just in time for the tournament. Should be fun.

Going to Ghost's house for a last minute training session with Loz and Nympho on Thursday. Ghost says he aims to be playing solidly pretty much all day and I think I'll do the same. If I do terribly at Hypespotting it won't be for lack of time spent grinding. It might be due to wasting that practise time by playing T. Hawk every other game, but sometimes you have to go with your heart.

Also this week's Gootecks and Mike Ross show was very entertaining. It was the season finale so they decided to do a Gootecks vs Mike FT5. Gootecks' Yang vs. Mike's atrocious Yun. Lots of fun. Watch it guys.

Haha yeah, Loz has set himself the goal of dragging some of the rest of the cast up to C rank. He was playing a lot of Vega and Sagat at the offline session on Sunday so that's not too surprising. He is quite fraudulent with both of them but I think that's why he's enjoying playing them. :D

JLM's trip to Barfights Leicester/Electronic Dojo presents Super Sunday

Apologies for the lateness of this report, but as mentioned earlier I lost my first draft of it and was very grumpy about that. So, stuff. Firstly, the midlands FGC is lovely. Everyone there was very welcoming and friendly and they all make a ridiculous amount of noise at all the right moments. When you see ProFluke on his home turf you can see exactly where he gets his absurd levels of hype from. Some of the midlands folks have made quite an effort to attend SFO events of late, so it was nice to return the favour here and the tournament organisers were grateful for it. On that front, the tournament organisers here might just be my favourite at any tournament I've attended. Two guys with ipads who were loud and assertive enough whilst also being perfectly approachable and open to questions. It may seem like an obvious thing, but running a tournament on time is stressful and it's not easy to answer the same question fifty times in the space of two hours. These guys did it with a smile without compromising the running speed of the event in the slightest.

My second main take away from this tournament is that the venue is absolutely glorious. It's a branch of Rileys Sports bar, but this particular one is laid out in such a way that it seems almost custom built for fighting game tournaments. Ample space for a dozen set ups with tonnes of room to mill about in between, then a stage area with a big projector and loads of seats in front of that as well. They used the U.S. major system of getting players due to play on stream to sit on the front row for the game before theirs, and it made for a very professional and well organised affair with no big gaps of dead air on the main stage.

The stream set up itself was a cut above anything I've seen at a UK tournament. Two BenQ monitors back to back, one Xbox, a cabinet to house it all, cameras attached to both monitors and some very fancy gaming headsets for each player. It felt like something you'd see at an American major and it made me extremely nervous when I had to play on it. All of that equipment was provided by one man, and I later found out that the same dude provided an additional six BenQ monitors and Xboxes on top of that. Insane levels of dedication, and their scene is so lucky to have him despite his rather obnoxious commentary. I can't stress enough how lovely it is to attend a tournament where every single set up has exactly the same hardware on it. It makes all the difference in the world, and I am convinced now that a BenQ or Asus sponsorship is so much more useful than an endorsement from Capcom for a tournament organiser.

I only had time to play two quick games in casuals against a very friendly chap who, like me, had set himself the restriction of using his new main all tournament unless he was forced to switch. I fought his Gouken with Dudley and ended the set with a perfect, finishing with the crumple - > standing roundhouse xx lk duck fake cross under thing that nobody blocks the first time. This got a lovely reaction from the few spectators who had gathered. He then says to me "so are you maining Dudley for this tournament?" "Nope 8-)"

Heheheh.

Oh, in casuals afterwards I played an Ibuki player with Dudley as well, and landed cr. jab - > cr. jab - > standing roundhouse xx ducking straight - > FADC teleport - > standing roundhouse - > EX MGB - > ducking straight - > Ultra 2 for the kill. He looked at me in utter disgust and remarked "that was DIRTY man" and shook his head for several seconds. It was a beautiful moment.

But yeah, anyway, midlands FGC. Great people, great venue and some seriously impressive hardware and gadgetry. I sort of want to move to Leicester now.

The tournament then:

JLM (Rose) 2-0 RyanS (Ryu)

Comfortable win here, though I got very annoyed with myself for a stupid and unnecessary jump in the last round that could have cost me a lot of life. It didn't, but I shouldn't let a win gloss over my silly mistakes.

JLM (Chun) 0-2 Zaus (Rose)

Argh, Zaus. He's so very very safe and I would one day like my Rose to be as good as his. This was played on stream and I was incredibly nervous as as result. I was also forced to play Chun as he annihilated my Dudley at Teesports and I didn't want to embarrass myself in Rose mirrors. I lost the first game in a nailbiting time out situation, and after that my patience and concentration were completely shot. I find that's a common trend with me; if the first game is particularly gruelling I will almost always collapse in the next one. When Zaus established a life lead in this match it was very hard to envision how I was going to get that damage back, and as a result I played like a fool and made it easy for him. I think Chun/Rose has to be in my top 3 most hated match ups in the game. I hate playing it from both sides equally and I think it is the most even 5-5 match there is. They are both absolutely perfectly equipped to cancel each other out, so if both sides play correctly a time over is the most likely result. I had a good-humoured rant at Zaus after the match for putting me into losers every time I travel for a tournament and for forcing me to pick CHun when I promised myself I wouldn't. He is a lovely man, though, and seemed quite pleased to hear that I was picking up Rose myself. GGs to that man, but he really is my tournament nemesis now.

JLM (Rose) 2-0 Sam Shaw (Gouken, Gen)

This is the gent I played in casuals and bopped with Dudley. His Gouken is his new experimental main as Rose is mine, so we agreed before the match that we'd run that first. I ended up winning it quite comfortably, to the point that I even made a note of not using any of my cheap set ups in case I needed to save them for later. This is the sort of 2 out of 3 tournament strategy I need to work on, as it's often very tempting to bust out all your tricks right away and try to win as fast as possible, when it might have been better to save that stuff for round 3 of game 3.

He switched to his Gen after that, and this match up was much more difficult as he had a lot of the filthy Xian set ups and a strong footsies game. Fortunately for me, Gen is a low health character and he wasn't ready for my cheap Rose set ups. Last round I had 40% life and he had about 5%. We were both at full screen walking back and forth, him sitting on both Super and Ultra. We walked back and forth for a full 15 seconds of game time, then he jumped and I hit cr. fierce for the win. I was so, so pleased with my patience in that situation, and it helped a little that Tyson standing behind me simply said "you're winning" right at the beginning of that little stand off. It should seem obvious to do nothing and let the opponent kill himself when you're in such a winning position, but I'll be damned if it isn't the hardest skill of all to learn in this game. A very satisfying win against a very capable player.

JLM (Rose) 2-0 MikeSF (Balrog, Fei Long)

Balrog and Fei Long in one set and I still won! I hate both of those fuckers so much that it felt like a minor miracle to take this 2-0. Although Chun is actually better than Rose at the Balrog match on paper, I prefer fighting it with Rose simply because I have armour breaking options to beat EX rushes, and I can only anti-air using one specific button at one specific range, but if I do that it's very reliable. It simplifies things for me, so I can concentrate on the ground game, make sure my spacing is on point and then anti-air without having to choose from a wheel of options. I slightly prefer Rose against Fei as well, again because Fei likes to abuse focus against characters with excellent normals, and Rose has better answers to this than Chun. I still think she loses the match up, but she has better tools to cover one of my weaknesses as a player. Again, a pleasing win, this time because those two characters are personal demons for me.

JLM (Rose) 1-2 ProFluke (El Fuerte)

This one was on stream as well, and once again the nerves were a big factor. Fortunately for me, Luke doesn't like fighting Rose and I think the frantic pace of the match was quite suited to my adrenaline-fueled state at the time. I also took my first ever round due to pausing, just like a real scumbag tournament player might! Luke paused the match, I looked up and he was yelling at me "just take the fucking round!" with a look of utter rage on his face. He gets very mad at himself for pausing as his character has literally nothing but momentum and flow going for it. The pause disrupts him much more than the opponent and I honestly believe insisting that we carried on wouldn't have made a difference as he'd mentally given up the round. Aside from that scumbaggery, I think I played quite well aside from getting flustered and doing too many back dashes as it went on. Oh, and there was one point where I activated ultra 2 and he was doing EX run slide from full screen. I panicked and mashed out an EX spiral and this got stuffed and I lost the orbs as well. I could definitely have blocked the slide instead and let him run into the orbs and confirmed into a combo, but instead I fucking James Chen'd it and lost the set. Still, a decent effort considering I still have next to no experience against a Fuerte of his class and my hands were barely working due to stream jitters.

So, 3 and 2 with Rose. Not a bad showing I feel. Lots of valuable experience, both from the tournament games and in casuals, and it was nice that I only felt the need to run back to Chun due to a very specific set of circumstances that hopefully won't come up again too often.

The top 3 in the end were:

1st: UM Tyrant (Bison)
2nd: ED Jinty (Ken)
3rd: Zaus (Rose)

Zaus got demolished by Jinty, and it was somewhat reassuring to see that even he started jumping in like a loon towards the end of the set. Tyrant's Bison is very strong, and it's a real shame that he won't be able to use the Hypespotting seeding he won here because his sponsors have insisted that he attends the Birmingham tournament on the same weekend instead. Someone really needs to have a word with them as it seems clear that Hypespotting will be the tournament of choice that weekend.

Will definitely be on the look out for more events in Leicester and Birmingham as I had an excellent time at this one. Before that though, Hypespotting!!!!!!!11111111!!!!!!!!11111111!!!!!!!oneoneone...

Thanks for the information, guys. I went 5-7 against MetallicMike's Juri about three days ago and I remember I wasn't entirely convinced he was even really trying. Then he switched to Cammy and murdered me for one game.

That's all I have to say about my group. I will probably spend the next couple of days working late rather than practising because I'm a stupid grown up.

Manchester has a very active scene. Most if not all of the events are run by Manchester Battle Arena. Lots of love for Tekken there, but plenty of SF4 and Marvel stuff happening as well.

You may also want to look at Merseyside Fight club:

Also come to Leeds for one of our monthly tournaments, they're hype!

Ideal, just what I was looking for. I'm pretty skint/unemployed at the moment, so might have to stick to locals for the moment.. Definitely need some practice as well!

Manchester has a Tekken scene? :o I'm overgoddamnjoyed, love me some Tekken.
