Ultra Street Fighter IV

It hadn't occurred to me that Pro Tour would not only cost for archive access but would take content and viewers away from guys like spooky who actually built the stream audience into something big enough to warrant publisher support.

Also it appears I've been paying Capcom five bucks a month since whenever Capcom Cup was. Oops.

Here's a 10 minute video of Combofiend playing Decapre, spoilered since it's right after Final Round's top 16 and I've not vetted it for spoilers. This video does a far better job of demonstrating how she'll work as a character and really sets her apart from Cammy.

I think she looks great; there really isn't a load of choice for charge characters in Street Fighter 4; even less who suit a rushdown playstyle. She has bits of Oni, bits of SFxT's Raven, teleport dives a bit like Guilty Gear's Venom and Gen style hands for confirms plus an excellent Yoga Catastrophe Ultra.

It is a bit of a shame that she looks so much like Cammy though being a Doll I can forgive that. I would have liked more variety in her stances and the animation of her normals, though. Plus even Combofiend almost accidentally called her Cammy in that IGN demonstration video.

I've been trying to tell people! ESGN was only the beginning!

Some ace matches, and that's a great video to show to nonbelievers - I was still under the impression that she might end up like a reskinned Cammy, but her design takes inspiration from all sorts of other characters and in those matches she looks pretty unique. (As an aside, I'm also surprised that the Strekken levels shown in that video didn't look as out-of-place as I thought they might, so there's still hope :) )

Yeah, I think a tweaked stance and some new or re-styled normals like evil ryu's could really help set her apart. The target combos of recycled Cammy normals look very cheap and thrown together. But yeah, as I mentioned earlier, the matches and character breakdown videos make it quite clear that she will play very differently from Cammy. The clips they used in the initial trailer were so poorly chosen that it almost feels designed to piss people off. Bizarre.

That Psycho Stream ultra is absolutely delicious. I'm still set on Poison as my favourite USF4 addition but I reckon Decapre is number 2. Everyone is going to be so free against that EX teleport for the first few months. Hope she's in the build we get to play at Hypespotting!

I watched all of that earlier, and had no idea that Combofiend's opponent was the winner of FR17, which I haven't seen yet, so I'm afraid you spoilt SR17 dude. They don't mention he's the winner in the commentary.

Still, awesome set. Really excited about D.

Joffo, are you the best third strike player who ever lived? I ask be because the most recent team jellistarr training session made it very apparent that we need the best third strike player who ever lived on our Hypespotting team if we are to make it past the first round. My power rangers and MVC2 games are both leaps and bounds ahead of my 3S game at present.

Speaking of Hypespotting did you guys get that email asking you to update your location information so they can separate people out in the pools? Where am I supposed to be doing that?

I'm barely in contention to be named as one of the third strike players who ever lived. I can barely even stick out a mp with a super art buffered properly BUT IF I COULD I WOULD BE UNSTOPPABLE.

Also, Allystar, no, I don't think I did get that email? When did you receive it? I tend to sign up for things using my junk email address.

I'm very out of touch at the moment and haven't seen any streams in forever. But I did see a video of a mans who may or may not have won a recent tournament play Combofiend's Decapre in a best of three and she looked alright. I liked the running punchy move and the launcher thing and the yoga catastrophe and some kind of cancelable dash teleport thing (??). I didn't like the fact that her movement animation and normals are, at present, exactly like Cammy's - thought that lacked imagination a little, despite whatever the Bison doll backstory might be.

Sadly, she's a charge character so I'll never use her even if I play this wonderful game ever again.

Final Round:

So happy for Ryan. Haven't celebrated a grand finals result like that in a very long time. I absolutely love PR Rog these days (despite multiple people telling me he's an 'asshole' - seriously, all use the same word) so would have been happy with either winning, but to see Ryan turn it around after such a drubbing in the first set was great. He looked absolutely mindfucked after that, and I thought he was going to get steamrolled, but the second set was a perfect case study in adapting to your opponent. Marvellous stuff.

I haven't watched all of pools yet (the good thing about Capcom Pro Tour is that the day one stream is over 10 hours of solid Street Fighter) but the best thing I've seen so far was Velociraptor, who had his opponent down to 10% health and scored a hard knockdown. Charged up a meaty fireball, let it go with the correct timing. Turned out it was fierce fireball so it went straight over the opponent's head, the guy naturally woke up blocking so Velociraptor FADCed it and threw him for the win. So godlike. If I played Gouken I would steal it.

And just to weigh in on commentary, I have always defended James Chen but I'm starting to get annoyed with his frequent detours into explaining things for the layman and every time he says 'why block when you can uppercut' I picture Jason and Alistarr in their purple hoodies looking stern. If they are going to do solid 12-hour days it'd be nice to hear from some more people.

Also I am wearing a purple Superdry hoodie today, which not only makes me feel like part of Team Jellistar but also has me feeling a decade younger than I am. I might go buy a 3DS game from Sainsburys at lunch.

I have no idea why I'm still writing in spoiler tags.

Coleslaw!
