Ultra Street Fighter IV

That's excellent news, especially the grassroots stuff. When I (imminent clang warning) talked to Marn at E3 last year about why he dropped fighting games for LOL he said it was because he was only ever going to make money playing LOL since FGC pots are so small as publishers don't get involved at all. And Riot will lay on transport, food and sometimes accommodation for players, but Capcom just lets the community be the community. Without Mad Catz the scene would be nowhere, really.

No doubt the Ultra marketing budget has helped with this but I can imagine Combofiend having pushed for it quite hard internally. Personally I'm delighted because it means more streams to watch in between majors.

Day 1

Fared better, though still got rounded on. Juri was causing me problems tonight but Deejay seemed to sort that out. Played a very good Dudley who obvs hammered me, but I'm getting used to when to do moves to get me out of trouble or to catch something from a particular distance now. Mk is a godsend but I can't tech for SHIT.

Also just heard SVB was announced yesterday, not at HOG but with its support and at a previous venue. I presume they'll be looking to get involved in the Pro Tour thing. I can't figure out how to link it but

https://www.facebook.com/TheHeartOfGaming

should do you.

London folks, it's pretty silly that we haven't organised a trip out there recently.

What Haggar said. I'm having a really bad week, Thursday looms and I don't know if I'll have the energy or enthusiasm to put my game-face on for the film intro. So if you come along you might see me totally crack in front of a room full of people and start swearing and/or crying. It'll be worth the admission price alone.

Day 2: I immediately regret this decision

Rough time. I got soundly hammered overall tonight. Gens and Roses (great name) tore me apart and Khaos NG was AMAZING with Dudley. Most other players got the better of me and one even messaged to say I was a coward after giving me a hiding! Economicpaladin was his name. Needlessly rude I thought.

I also had some good matches with strawdonkey and thanks for the kind words and tips - they are appreciated! I didn't mean to pull you into SF but it said you were looking for matches but you were playing BB2 when I messages you? Thanks again anyway.

Also a guy in work said an ex-colleague is involved with this: http://m.youtube.com/channel/UCwZ9W3dIOd2MBq1jKuZrQKA anyone seen it before?

GGs! I am actually probably getting rid of my 360* so was just logging on to see what needed deleting, but have had my beacon set for Street Fighting since beacons were invented so I am always down for the punchings.

I really liked the way you adjusted over the course of our set. For a while I was catching you with slide -> throw which isn't a true string, then four or five matches in you started Pressing Buttons and at the very least either putting me in a blocking state, or getting some damage out of it. Dudley has a lot of good buttons and you definitely did a lot of walking forward mixed with pressing those buttons so good work on that.

The two main holes I'd pick in your game (bar the usual not maximising damage off every hit which just comes with combo practice) were that you would press buttons on your opponent's wakeup FAR too much, and closing space with rush punches. Almost every knockdown would be followed up with an overhead! Sometimes it worked but it'd work much more often if varied a little more. The rush punches, bar the EX one, aren't great at closing space and if you pick the wrong one it's a disaster as you end up caught in no man's land doing a combo against thin air. Dudley isn't necessarily supposed to get in easily, mainly because once he's in you have all those lovely buttons to make sure you stay in!

Wicked set though. Sorry for leaving so suddenly, my daughter took an interest in the TE stick cable. Far from it being a danger to her, she was threatening to yank the XBox out of the TV cabinet :)

*Still have AE2012 on PS3!

I was playing pretty stupid - you can see two wakeup EX Spirals getting stuffed there - but I feel like I've finally validated putting "Waiting..." as that message that appears under my points before a match.

Also a while ago I discovered that neutral jump can beat Ken's wakeup U1 in a similarly amusing fashion.

Day 3: I want you to hit me as hard as you can

The brown streak continues, but it was to be expected I suppose. Little things are getting better though and starting to sink in, finally. Highlight of the evening was beating 500-odd Dhalsim with Dudley and feeling like I played well for it. I feel like I'm getting to grips with when and when not to do things so I need to get into 'the lab' (a garden shed with a homemade chemistry set in) and get two or thee combos down now, so I can maximise the damage I make when I get the chance, as Strawdonkey mentioned.

Incidentally, what happened to WotR?

They finished the trilogy and then made a bunch of hobbit movies nobody wanted.

Do you have a chat headset? You're right that a lot of it will come down to practice and experience, but if you want to do a training session add me and I will do my best to avoid giving my usual terrible advice (e.g. always use st.mp, jump more, etc). It must be hard work joining the game again now without much feedback on how you're doing. My tag is ALI5T4RR - I think we used to be friends but one of us may have callously cut the other off thanks to the daft limit on how many friends you're allowed.

I'm distraught. You're still on my list (I think).

I'll set up the headset and that this weekend and if you're on, that would be much appreciated.

I'm enjoying the times I play, regardless of the outcome, so I guess that's why I play games.

I remember you DC, I'm sure we had a Balrog mirror match back when there was an RLLMUK tournie aages back.

Didn't you play Blazblue back when everyone thought it was a good idea? Anyway, I'm in much the same boat as you, jus getting back into this after a few shakey starts, at a lowly 500pp compared to the 2000+ I was rocking in Vanilla. I've left the scumminess of Cammy on the side for now, and actually trying to remember how to play the game 'properly' using Sakura.

I'm so bad, and so angry at being so bad :(

Incidentally, what happened to WotR?

I think everyone had kids/got old and real life just kinda got in the way. Writing one article was pretty tough and pulling the whole thing together must have taken hours.

A lot of the old faces are still around and the forum is still going, but short of amusingly-timed one-off comebacks I don't think it'll be back, sadly :(

If anyone's planning on any XBL lobbying over the next few days feel free to throw invites at me if I'm around. I'm hoping not everyone has abandoned Street Fighter in favour of big stompy robots and bonfire kindling... :(

I've abandoned Street Fighter in favour of Street Fighter on my laptop instead. I got the achievement for using focus attacks.

Is the character announcement for Ultra expected in the early hours of tomorrow, our time? Is there a schedule showing a Capcom announcement time? I figure the announcement would be early on so they can playtest a build including her at the event?
