Ultra Street Fighter IV

Day 0

I played all morning and learned some hard lessons but progress was made, because it was impossible to be worse than I am. I tried the combos in training but struggled to even do the second one and only managed to cancel into EX-MGB after the hk ONCE. I love mk as an anti-air but struggled to 'get in' against certain characters like Guile.

Had more success with Fei and Dee Jay but lost a WHOLE lot. Didn't ever feel ratty about it though, well not with anything but my lack of skill. My hands feel like they go to shit sometimes and I'm sure it's going to be hard coming in at this point in the games lifecycle but I enjoyed playing at least.

GGs to Lyrical and Qazi on Thursday, and Choo last night (cut short due to laptop failure :( ).

I should really play this more.

Also from Choo's urging I actually watched WNF vs Norcal. Amazing scenes, even the wife got it to it towards the end :D

The second one is the hardest of those combos so don't feel too bad! Took me a lot of hours to get and I still miss it unless I take a bit of time to remind myself of the timing.

Advice from someone whose Dudley sucks: vs Guile you can j.HK if he's just throwing booms (i.e. you know he's not charging for a flash kick) and you can try doing Ducking to go through projectiles if you think he's not ready for it. At certain ranges he can punch you after the boom though. Quick focus attacks can also help once you're in range.

You also have to bear in mind the general Guile matchup for most characters which is about slowly walking him backwards, blocking booms and taking little bits of damage because you know once you get next to him the his life gets more difficult.

That said though, don't feel bad about picking Fei if you enjoy using him! Someone will be able to advise on that character too if you need it

Guile is great at shutting down any plans you may have to close the distance and actually attack. He'll throw sonic booms all day and if you try jumping he'll flash kick your face. I don't play the Dudley-Guile matchup all that much but alistarr's outline of the fundamentals is true enough; you really have to try and get close to him and make sure he can't create more distance. Of course, any character can focus dash to get closer but you don't want to burn through your lifebar too much, so blocking, walking closer and being patient pays off.

(All of which is useless coming from me as forum Guiles such as andygt and IG have 5-0'd me in every forum league or tournament I've joined, but still...)

It's my happy birthday plopboy and I've been given a lovely new laptop that's quite capable of running Street Fighter IV. I tested it by getting Dan to C rank online but I failed to win ten in a row. People are a bit worse, though; I was just about to perfect an A rank Ibuki player for SAIKYO glory but they quit on me. I also got a bit of mild ragemail. Huffmail.

How do I go about streaming or recording videos? I bought Nidhogg too, obviously. I also plan to work on a decent wee MAME selection. PC! It's been a long time.

Happy Birthday Plopcakes!

For recording video I use a program called MSI Afterburner - it might look a little scary when installed (and the website looks very, very dated), but it's free and more than equal to FRAPS. Also the actual video recording part of it (it's primarily an overclocking program) is much easier to set up an use than it might appear on first look.

Also the observation about PC players being worse is true. I'm awful these days.

Without going into huge amounts of depth right now, in order to stream you just need an account on a service like Twitch (most people opt for a free account which shows ads during broadcasts, but it's not that bad), a piece of software that does your streaming, and some games and applications that hopefully are able to run in a window (so that you can assign a source easily, and also keep an eye on the game and stream status at the same time.) I use Open Broadcaster Software and followed a guide over here but I know other people use XSplit and whatnot.

Also when you're getting your stream on, I made a thread in the SF4 folder here if you ever want to share channel links and post about forthcoming broadcasts :)

Fun day out at Super Sunday in Leicester today. They have an absolutely outstanding venue for SF tournaments and I am deeply envious that they run a weekly tournament there. I feel like I need to move to Leicester.

Full write up will follow of course, but the short results for me are as follows:

Won 3, lost 2. Losses were to Zaus and ProFluke, who are both very good players. All three wins were with Rose! Pretty pleased with that performance, though honestly I think I should have done better against ProFluke, for reasons that I will get into when I do the full spiel. They have a lovely little scene in the Midlands, with the Electronic Dojo guys from Birmingham and the Barfights Leicester crew both boasting some talented players and friendly, welcoming people. Definitely up for going back.

Man, I wish I didn't have to sit and press plastic buttons all day and watch patterns change on a screen, because I'd much rather spend the day pressing plastic buttons and watching patterns change on a screen.
