Red Dwarf

I quite liked 8 on rewatch but thought 7 was tripe. 8 was still very hit and miss but the series needed a revamp and it mixed things up nicely. Krytie TV was a standout ep. Kochanski coming back was a big mistake. Nothing against Chloe Annette but she's just not very funny and the character is really badly written.

I used to have a series 7 VHS which didn't have the laugh track on it, think it was an extended cut of three episodes. I remember watching it and being utterly confused by the lack of laughter. It did kind of take away some of the humor at the time for me.

Yeah it was called Red Dwarf Xtended and featured the full version of tikka to ride.

Rob Grant, Ed Bye and Paul Jackson did a commentary on Future Echoes. Haven't watched it yet, but apparently it's intended to be a regular thing:

Last night, another commentary was organised for the episode Quarantine, with Doug Naylor, Craig Charles, Robert Llewellyn, Hattie Hayridge, Danny John-Jules and Maggie Steed (Dr Lanstrom in the episode).

Unfortunately the attempt at synchronising a pre-recorded video commentary with the live broadcast of the episode on Dave ended up being pretty shambolic:

First of all, we’d just like to set out from the start that none of the following criticism is aimed at any individuals. As a social media bod in the TV industry myself, I know that Dave’s Twitter person will be absolutely gutted right now, but these things happen. We’ve all got our horror stories. What matters is that they tried their damnedest to provide their followers with something brilliant to keep them entertained through dark times, whilst presumably working from home and battling against problems seemingly out of their control.

Then after a description of what went wrong:

The good news is: Dave have promised that they’ll be uploading the full commentary in the morning, where hopefully it will make for a much less confusing viewing experience. It’s fair to say this live event did not go to plan. But it did give us a good laugh, and that’s worth a lot at the moment. With far far more important things to get upset about, we’re starting to find what’s now a fine tradition of UKTV slightly cocking up Red Dwarf‘s promotion quite endearing. It’s hard to complain when these people are bringing us brand new Red Dwarf in two days, and the other half of Grant Naylor is providing a brilliant live commentary experience on a weekly basis for the foreseeable. With all this happening for the episode that contains the “Mickey Mouse operation” joke, it was actually kind of perfect.

I hated Krytie TV, it's probably one of my least favourite episodes.

That was good!

I was a bit concerned about the direction that the

Spoiler

sex change

conversation was going at the start, but fortunately that turned out to be the only potentially dodgy bit.

Cat in particular had some great moments. A few years ago it looked like series XI's Can of Worms was going to be the big Cat episode about the return of his species, but that ended up about something else entirely (and wasn't very good). This made a much better conclusion to a 30+ year old plot thread!

They've put a Smeg Ups compilation online. I'm going to watch it now...

Edit: They are good smeg ups...

Spoiler

Norman Lovett

gets the best one!

Wow the guys over at Ganymede and Titan really liked it as well. Normally a section of their commenters give Dave era stuff a raking over the coals but they seemed to like it. Maybe this feature film esq length can work well in the future.

I think that Doug really has improved a lot a solo writer. The later half of 12 was solid stuff with Skipper being a great episode.

Amazing twitter thread about the artwork on the new series. Particular highlight has to be the star haynes manual.

Prime bit of merchandising opportunity right there.   Quite enjoyed that but got interrupted throughout.   Would people prefer more in this format or more regular series?

Some very good moments in there, particularly the

Spoiler

Black & white existential Rimmer, and Lister's subsequent moonlight speech

If I was critical of anything it would be the

Spoiler

Lack of real depth to the three fervent believers, and overplaying the whole extension cord gag

Still, the best new Dwarf since series six for me.

I would rather see a short series of 30-minute episodes than more specials.
