'Officer Rimmer' is great. It feels like a proper, old-school Red Dwarf episode. There's a lot of middling and poor stuff as well before and after that, with occasional flashes of brilliance.

And Skipper. I loved Skipper. Mechocracy is alos fun and M-corp. But then along comes an episdoe like "Timewave"...urgh. Still, the new special has finished being recorded and is apparently good.

My kids are in 2 week isolation at their mum's - first thing they watched on telly today?

Quarantine

"You're getting tetchy....."

Really want to watch that later when I get home, but I haven’t watched Classic Era ‘Dwarf since around 2001, so I’m a bit reluctant in case it’s aged worse than I imagined...

If anything, classic era Red Dwarf has aged better than anyone would have imagined!

Snazzy-lookin' production values! Hope it's not another "Back To Earth"...

I watched that a couple of weeks ago on a complete run through again and.. it's not as bad as I remember. Once all the constant waiting and expectation is removed it's actually not all that bad. Was of time for sure but it does a good enough job of returning to a fun classic with some okay jokes tossed in. Not bad but not a stinker.

Similarly, in light of my rather strong opinions on series 7 further up the thread I did actually go back and rewatch it for the first time since it aired. And do you know what? I recant slightly. There are laughs to be had.

It was last year and obviously the world's now ending so my memory's a bit hazy but I remember thinking Tikka to Ride is still pretty much irredeemable. The plot makes no sense whatsoever and ultimately it left a bad taste in the mouth morally as well. Stoke Me A Clipper though? I was genuinely surprised. The whole opening sequence is worthless but if you jettison that and start the episode on the Dwarf it's actually a really nice little character episode with some good laughs and it's poignant in that way that even early Dwarf managed to do.

I can't recall too much about the others so another watch is probably due but I remember they sort of alternated between okay and good. One thing I did find odd was that some episodes had audience laughter and some didn't - the bits with it were generally better tbh. I also noticed that they still used some model shots which stood out compared to the woeful CGI.

So yeah. It was alright. I suppose I should reassess series 8 now...

On Netflix? They've got the extended versions of a couple of episodes, which had no audience track. A bit weird, in my opinion.

7 didn't have a laughter track originally, have they added one and then....forgotten to add it to the extended scenes?

A quick google tells me I cannot trust my memory at all

If I remember correctly, VII was odd in that it was filmed without a studio audience. Instead the final cut of each episode was screened for an audience, and the laugh track was recorded at those screenings. This meant that the deleted scenes added into the extended cuts never had laugh tracks recorded, so they released the extended episodes with no laugh track at all rather than mix and match, which would have been even weirder.

My season 8 was other peoples season 7 I think. Season 7 didn't have a live audience I'm sure I read, footage was shown later. In season 7 i loved the rimmer experience, loved the characterisation of Rimmer being brought back because he was so annoying that Lister winding him up kept him going, 'you mean he sacrificed his happiness?' The locker game, golf on the moon, the Cat; 'you had fun with Rimmer?!' It used our familiarity with how unlikeable Rimmer is in a way that wasn't fan service I think.

I loved Lister getting the virus which takes knowledge from its victims and they try to reason and trick it. Loved him losing his arm and everything that follows, the conversation about people in history who have got far with one arm. 'I'm just going to the toilet...I don't actually need to go yet, but seeing as it takes me 30 minutes to unbutton my fly..' I watched all of Red Dwarf when I was young so all the stuff about losing an arm really tickled me. 'My left arm I said, my left..what kind of navigation officer doesn't know the difference between left and right'.

Lister trying on his new arm ! C'mon, that is classic Red Dwarf. 'So what you're saying is..if I want to do anything I have to take the morning off'.

Even among the Kryten jealous of Kochanski stuff there's moments. 'To make matters worse I'm surrounded by a droid who is completely obsessed with my pants drawer'...Kryten: 'you mean...I'm not alone??...oh'. It's obvious but the delivery makes it.

I haven't seen season 8 for a long time. I liked the first episode originally, one of those where watching it with family coupled with the excitement of a new series. But the rest was like a nightmare. I'm gonna go back in again I think and really try.

Radio times have a 'best season of red dwarf' poll

I'd probably go with 3. Marooned is my favourite episode and then Queeg (S2). 3 had so many classics though, Bodyswap, Backwards, Timeslides, Polymorph, The Last Day. That's...every episode yeah.
