pulsemyne
What a bunch of Killjoys you people are. Even moderately funny Red Dwarf is better than most of the so-called comedies made today. Also reactions from fans at the tapings was very good (and the fans are a hard bunch to please), most of them saying it's better than ten and even up there with the very best Dwarf ever. Also there was never just one Kryten costume or one mask. Both were remade and recast every year. It's a sort of running joke that Kryten looks different every year and yet there is no explanation as too why.

Both Rob and Doug were massively overworked at the time and the series was written in a massive rush (even their normal changing scripts on the day of recording was proving too much for them to take). Rob left because he ran out of steam and was tired of Dwarf and he had arguments with Doug about the direction etc. They have since made up somewhat but neither wish to write together again, although they did finish writing an old episode for the "Bodysnatcher" DVD collection. If you have seen the other things Rob did then...yeah...they weren't great (the books were okay but the TV stuff wasn't). Also the last episode of series 10 is actually a very cut down and slightly altered version of what the film was going to be.

Popular Post Loik V credern
I'm not such a Red Dwarf purist where I only love the first 2 series, find the 3rd series acceptable, tolerate 4 and 5, think 6 was where they lost it, 7 was hateful, 8 an abomination, X worse than cancer. There's degrees to which each person can accept the difference in style and tone a show has taken. I still enjoy the odd Malcolm in the Middle episode from the last few series, and probably the odd Family Guy, it's just impossible for a show to remain consistent, and a lot of the bands I liked from the 00s couldn't even release more than one album before going shit, so 15/40 odd episodes is pretty good in comparison. I can't decide which Red Dwarf i like most, Marooned is probably my favourite episode, i love Rimmer telling stories about his past, but i also love the action episodes, like Emohawk: Polymorph II, i remember watching that one a lot with my family where it became a favourite. I've let you all down, take those pos's away. Watching them growing up, they all melded into different shades of the same show, not pure understated all about isolation quick fire dialogue Dwarf and crowd pleasing big budget adventure Dwarf. I loved that it could do both, i enjoyed the ideas as much as the humour. I loved the cockpit scenes in Starbug, i loved the camaraderie between the actors, going through unreality bubbles, 'lets not lose our heads', the Cat getting hysterical at them suddenly forgetting him. Rimmer's 'Kryten, step up to red alert'. 'Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb'. I also liked series 7, it being a comedy drama rather than just a comedy, I've never thought of it like that, but that's fine, it's not pure Dwarf I suppose, people might hate that it plays up Kryten's affection for Lister, but i don't think it was cringey. They did the same in series 6, when they meet their future selves and Kryten is used like that to play up the expectation of the condition Lister finds himself in, 'his favourite mug'. which plays up the humour because of Rimmer's glee, his 'Ohhhhhhhh dear' when he sees the state Lister is in is so perfect. Also loved the scene where Lister is trying to teach Kryten how to lie, say a banana is anything but. 'it's a, it's a...It's a small off-duty Czechoslovakian traffic warden'. Lost me at series 8.
mexos
Not sure I can bear to watch it. It's a terrible thing to see something you loved as a kid die a horrible extended, excruciating death. On the other hand it might actually be good. YOU NEVER LEERRN, DO YOU.

Most mainstream comedies are written by committee dull as dish water. Take for example something like Miranda or Mrs Browns boys or the fucking appalling My Family. Even the very worst episode of Red Dwarf beats the best they have ever done. Also nearly every single Mainstream American show is pretty much anti-comedy, something that is processed, refined, distilled and then filmed so that every last drop of soul has been pulped from it and becomes a totally joyless thing to watch. Obviously I'm not saying all british comedies or all american ones are bad but fuck me I'd take one bad episode of Dwarf over 100 episodes of the fucking Big bang theory.

SqueakyG
I'm keeping my expectations cool but mildly hopeful. The last series had a few good woofers spread throughout, and 2 episodes out of 6 were even... quite decent. But there was also some horrendous cringe. Unfortunately, just because something was good, great or even sublime once, doesn't mean that it can't turn into a steaming pile of horse manure, and Red Dwarf turned into a steaming pile of horse manure. See also The Simpsons. And that's coming from a man with Mr Sparkle as his avatar. I'd still agree with you on the Big Bang Theory comment though, it's dire. It makes a pile of horse manure look like something ready for the Ambassador's reception.

Also I always liked Me2. Just a great insight into how much Rimmer loathes himself. Series 2 though was great with the possible exception of Thanks for the memory although we do get to see just what Red Dwarf could have been like if they had cast Chris Barrie as Lister like they originally wanted too. Death's Head
I'm really fond of 1 and 2 - something about the set design of that era, coupled with the sombre intro music just gives it a really nice feel. Perhaps it's because it feels like it's grounding the science-fiction aspect, making it believable, and thus a better launchpad for the sitcom aspect. (Series 3-6 are more 'my' era, though - I would have been far too young for 1 and 2 first time around). The other great thing about early Red Dwarf, which I completely managed to overlook until Craig Charles points it out on one of the DVD featurettes, is how casual it is about having half the main cast be black right from the off, including the lead. It's brilliant, and just one of many things the US remakes managed to completely ignore.

Paulando
The first episode is really good, but yeah, series 1 hasn't aged well. That awful, awful episode where Cat finds his last living descendant is excruciating. Series 2 is decent, Better Than Life is probably the high point for me. S3-S6 was the golden age though. Nick R
Lots of news on this recently. We had the episode titles and synopses: 1. TWENTICA The Dwarfers find themselves in an alternative version of America where modern technology is prohibited, making Rimmer and Kryten illegal. The Dwarfers infiltrate the tech savvy underground and try to bring down the authoritarian regime. 2. SAMSARA When the Dwarfers investigate a crashed ship at the bottom of an ocean moon, Lister and Cat become trapped together and Lister's nightmare begins. Meantime Rimmer and Kryten discover the ship is controlled by a dark force. 3. GIVE AND TAKE After an altercation with a deranged droid Lister has his kidneys organ-napped. The only solution is to ask Cat, the most selfish creature in the universe, to give him one of his. 4. OFFICER RIMMER After a scandalous piece of good fortune Rimmer saves the life of a bio-printed Captain and is promoted, fulfilling his life-long dream of becoming an Officer. He immediately opens an Officer's club, which is out of bounds to the lower orders, and uses the bio-printer to fill it with versions of himself. 5. KRYSIS Kryten has a mid-life crisis and changes his body cover from Mech grey to Ferrari red. The posse try and show him how much he's achieved in life by taking him to visit a mechanoid from his old fleet. 6. CAN OF WORMS Cat takes time off from being in love with himself to fall head over heels in love with a lady Cat with a big secret. And the broadcast details listed here: http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/news/2016/08/12/all-the-way-to-eleven/ ... Except those broadcast dates won't be the viewing dates because the episodes are being put online on the UKTV Player a week ahead of TV broadcast. I have to agree with the consensus on Ganymede & Titan - disappointment that this splitting will spoil the communal viewing experience, followed by post-broadcast fansite discussion, that was so enjoyable with the previous two series.
