Good but not great. Still, interesting to see how Rimmer develops in the next series, if there is one.

I'd be interested in that too. I've always chuckled at his insecure pedantry but it was a great moment when he made a successful plan and stood for it. Thing is, would his character changing upset the whole balance of the quartet?

I would like to see another series as this one wasn't bad, hopefully the next will be still better as Naylor gets his confidence back.

It had very good viewing figures, but Doug Naylor says that it'll still need good DVD sales as well before another will be commissioned (but then he would say that wouldn't he!). I would have thought that the biggest obstacle would be Craig Charles' part on Coronation Street - his character would have to be written out for the six consecutive weeks it takes to rehearse and record the episodes.

I didn't get the whole series 8 part. Probably because I don't remember what happened in series 8 apart from hating it.

Can someone give a quick run down of the events and how they dealt with it in the episode?

p.s. I should add that I really enjoyed the episode, good story and gags throughout. The killer was the note pad joke with Young Rimmer at the start, classic.

At the end of S07, Lister's arm gets cut off in an attempt to rid him of the intelligent virus Epideme. Kryten reckons they can use his nanobots to repair Lister, so long as they can find them. They do find them, in Lister's sock draw, having hijacked and shrunk Red Dwarf down to microscopic size. Kryten persuades them to rebuild the small rouge one at full size, and fix Lister's arm.

In S08, the nanobots do this- but they reconstruct RD to its original blueprints, rather than how it actually was (so there are a few extra features), and also resurrect the crew. Rimmer, a member of this resurrected crew (the holo-Arnie having pissed off to be Ace a while back), ends up falling into the group again, but all of them are imprisoned for hijacking Starbug for a number of years. At the end of the series, RD is infected by a ship-eating virus, which leads the entire crew (except a very select few...) to evacuate. Using some gadgetry, Lister, Cat, Kris and Kryten escape to a mirror universe; Rimmer is shot down by a vengeful vending machine and is approached by Death, but nuts him and walks away. In BTE, it's shown that the others come back from the mirror universe with the cure for the virus, that Rimmer survived (he doesn't have an H), and that when RD catches up with the rest of the crew on the lifeboats, Rimmer decides not to let them back on the ship, and to leave them behind.

I think it's left vague, but somehow Rimmer's a hologram again in BTE and, obviously, RDX.

I loved that entire series - I especially liked how RImmer has developed

a bit and allowed to do something heroic and save people

, I can't remember an episode where he got to do that as Rimmer, rather than an alter ego. I mean it's not 'lolololol! but I never found red dwarf to be that - and it just felt warm and nostalgic. ahhhh!

Got the DVD of this the other day, and it's absolutely worth picking up for the 2hr documentary about the making of. Reveals a lot of the crazy pressure and struggles they faced, and how the episode ,"Dear Dave" was basically being pieced together as the cameras rolled.

Watching the entire series again though, it really didn't disappoint. A cut beneath the high of series five, but probably the best series we've had since. I felt the Cat was maybe a little underused and I hope they can get a few location shoots next series, but overall this was far better than it had any right to be, and as I say, the documentary really does highlight how the series slipped through the eye of the needle in getting made at all.

There's no cast commentaries though, is there? One of the highlights of the Red Dwarf I-VIII DVD's was the cast just talking rubbish over each episode. Still, I will pick it up after Christmas - it's worth it for the last episode alone.

I got the BD for xmas, I watched the extras one day and all 6 eps the next day.

The documentary was excellent. I think most of the series had various production issues so X was not alone in that regard although some of the issues became technical due to the vastly different process from the previous shows. As for Dear Dave, parts of the end of Series 6 was written on the night. It's not the first time they've had to shoot stuff after the audience recording either, series 5 had a lot of reshoots. I never noticed the in-joke on Lister's RDX jacket before.

No idea if it's any good, but Robert Llewellyn's 'The Man in the Rubber Mask: The inside smegging story of Red Dwarf' is 99p in the Kindle Daily Deal today.

I read it ages go,and, as a big Red Dwarf fan, I remember really enjoying it. I actually have a signed copy of it somewhere.
