Were people not critical of things before the internet then?

'Well, they did have an IQ of 2.'

I mean, back before the internet, when I was watching Red Dwarf on TV I distinctly remember thinking that some episodes weren't as good as, didn't have as many jokes as, or contradicted plots or information we knew from, other episodes. Imagine that!

Before the internet you had to find people in real life to share your interests with. With more niche culture things you tended to club together and fiercely protect them whilst losing all perception of reality in the process. This is how things like Sonic the hedgehog happened.

Back in the day when you found something that spoke to you, you would cherish it and remember it fondly as time passed. These days every single fucking thing is driven into the ground by the geek culture machine through endless permutations, memes, fan creations/mods/mashups, commentary and critique until you stop remembering if and why you liked it in the first place. Then three weeks later it's all but forgotten, supplanted by a hivemind consensus that it was either shit or incredible, thrown into one of the two camps with everything else while we tear apart the next offering like a swarm of bloody locusts.

Well I'd say that's entirely an issue with you and how you perceive and interact with this "hivemind". You don't have to behave like that or believe what everyone else says you know. The suggestion that you can't like or connect with something anymore because a person or group on the internet didn't like it as much as you is pretty silly.

See, I thought it was mostly terrible this week. I really don't like these vending machines - they stand out too much compared to the old ones and are used far too much this series. I thought the Cats charades were a rip off of classic Holly moments and when Lister was trying to stand the vending machine up again was pretty much stolen wholesale from Polymorph. I did like the opening the mail scene, but that was pretty much it.

The best of the series by far, in fact it was so good it will probably go down as one of my favourite episodes in any series.

No real plot just the characters bouncing off each other which I loved.

That's what I loved about it. Rimmer being petty is always a joy. So people say parts of it are recycled gags etc but if it's funny who cares! Great end line as well. Apparently doug was unsure about using it but it got such a good reaction he kept it in. Lots of this episode was reshot or shot later as it was only half finished. The vending machine idea was a late addition but it added a bit more to the episode.

All in all good stuff and prehaps doug is getting his head around writing solo.

Who attempts to stand something up by lying on top of it?

Quite. I didn't like the way they executed the joke, although the joke itself was ok. Would have been a better "looks like he's shagging whilst really doing something legitimate lol" situation if he'd been spotted whilst struggling to shove it along the corridor or something.

Must say I agree with some of the comments earlier about the direction and editing it's been workman like at best and downright awful in places. Unable to gather the old troops I guess and no access to the bbc's crews.

Regardless, I'm still enjoying the series.

It's all quite depressing because with better direction, acting and a thorough overhaul of the scripts the series would've been quite decent.

Still, I honestly hope they make an 11th series after this. It's not like anything they do after this could ever be series VIII bad, let's be honest.

Watching the last episode in HD, it looked like quite a few scenes were shot with bluescreen, with still images of the sets behind the actors. I don't know if this is the case, or if the photography/cameras/lighting are just so odd that they make it look that way. What would be the reason for bluescreen -- reshoots after tearing down the sets? It's odd.

It wasn't just me that thought that then.

One really odd section is where they stand in front of a wall which has a load of rotating fans in and bright lights behind the fans. And yet, there are no shadows cast on the actors stood in front of them.
