Red Dwarf

If this was a Star Trek or Dr Who thread, you all would have been obsessing over something like... the words on the Taris signs changing, or the change in the graphics of the remastered Original Series. But when I point out a significant change in the ship that gives the series its name, you neg me. Inconsistent.

Ha, imagine expecting any sort of consistency in the size and shape of Red Dwarf.

And that's what makes series 7 so odd -- no studio audience. A lot of the vibrancy and energy is missing. Production value went up, but that just puts even more distance between the viewer and the material.

Shame that the shots of Starbug flying through space were shit-awful though. They even looked amateurish and blurry even back in 1997 - the criticism on Usenet of the time tended to be, "I could do better with my PC at home". The nerds.

I remember something about this. I'm sure there is something about it growing back when they went to the parallel universe at the end of Season 2.

are you not getting confused with "thanks for the memory" where lister implants 6 months of his life into rimmers brain. and when he finds out what's going on, he remarks "that's why i had my appendix out...twice!" ?

There was a brief mention on the Smeg Ups outtakes tape where Kryten suggests Lister had two appendices. But then it's impossible to know whether or not Kryten was in lie mode.

Edit: Punchman, it's that episode coupled with the events of Legion in Series VI, where Legion removes Lister's soon-to-burst appendix, that gave rise to the initial error.

Thought that was up there with some of the best really. I've never been an absolute hard-core fan of RD, but have always enjoyed it and this one just made me laugh a whole load, so I'm guessing that has to be a good thing.

Also chuckled at the preview for next weeks one too.

Great.

Hmm, I thought that was awful. They seem to have jumped from series 5 to series 8 in two episodes.

In what terms.

It was very much a 4-6 type of story (supposedly helpful tech goes wrong), but not in terms of jokes, which are different style. There does seem to be more of a build up for jokes now compared to many of the classics which came from no build up. So far we do seem a bit short on insulting Rimmer, although the computer predicting he would screw up the repairs was well played.

Funny thing is if you look back at red dwarf it's now possibly to see who wrote what gags. The beginning of white hole (now on) reaks of Doug. It's a build up of a joke right to the last piece of the conversation between Holly and the toaster.

I'm not really sure to be honest. It seemed to contain much less slow-burning sarcastic humour and loads of fast, pretty weak jokes. The longest running joke in the episode was literally just chinese whispers and Lister's story was full of gurning and overacting. The pace seems far too artificially high.

Compare it to what's on now, Dimension Jump. At the moment there's a long sequence completely devoid of any action where they're basically just affirming how much they detest Rimmer and how pathetic he is as a person (when he catches them trying to sneak off fishing without him). In isolation it doesn't even sound like a scene from a sci-fi programme, which is what I used to love about it. Anyway I dunno, I'm a massive 1-6 fan and am just moaning. Glad most people enjoyed it! :)

i wish they'd lost the whole Pre bit or shunted it to another episode, and had that whole episode a proper father and son episode, the build up was magnificent but i feel they could have done so much more. the dentist was shit, they should have just had scutter surgery like the old days, or something very basic going on.

the chinese whispers joke bit was shit, and the action comedy Pre storyline was basically another Casandra.

Very likely they couldn't afford skutters. Wouldn't be surprised if the BBC props department has them.
