Nah I dunno, I'm enjoying it, but there's a lot of poorly-written waffle in between gamey bits. The mark is fair, imo.

Pretty much. By typical DS standards the writing is quite good, by any other standards it's pretty crummy, and since at a nuts and bolts level it's just a visual novel with some escape the room sequences, the writing (and translation) is the most important part. The descriptions of gory scenes are unintentionally hilarious thanks the tendency to use ten long, repetitive sentences crammed full of florid adverbs and adjectives, where one nicely-written sentence would suffice. Good, unusual story/game if you like this type of thing, though!

The first gory scene was really well done, I thought. There's one later one which overdoes it, though, and the 'pizza dough' comment made me chuckle.

I don't think the writing's crummy - some of the localisation has clearly taken a bit too much from the original Japanese, following the rhythms of speech in that language a little too closely to sound quite right in English, but the story is gripping and the characterisation is pretty good.

I'd agree with that. There are a few times through the game where the writing is genuinely entertaining, but the vast majority is pretty utilitarian. It is however very well localised and there are more significant changes due to the language than you'd expect - unless you've been keeping up with the NeoGAF thread!

Does it compare favourably to 99.9% of games? Yes! Would you stack it up next to your favourite book? No.

I know this is a little cheeky, but can you post some of the more interesting comments from the review? (any comparisons made or why they rated it above the first game, etc.)

:)

Sure. :)

Dead Space 2 has everything its predecessor had. But what it offers as a sequel isn't more of the same but louder, or more of the same with bigger bosses, but more of the same with a greater depth of personality.
New guns and enemies are not behind Dead Space 2's noticeable leap in quality, which is worthy of comparison to Uncharted's move from a superior first game to an oustanding second. Both games are strengthened by polish, variety and, most radically for Dead Space 2, likeably engaging characters.
The game's excellent controls and stream of grisly scares make it the current standard for survival horror, and it now boasts eruptions of blockbusting action that rival this generation's biggest games.

Can't agree with EDGE on this one. Wonderful visuals (especially the animations), but gameplay-wise it gets boring right off the bat.

This is a complaint I've seen about Level-5 RPGs in general elsewhere, and this supposedly doesn't change up their usual formula much but has scored way higher than any of their previous efforts did in Edge:

DARK CLOUD - 7

DARK CLOUD 2 - 6

Rogue Galaxy - 6

White Knight Chronicles - 5

Their development duties on DQ don't count, even though the scores for those are way higher.

Does anyone think that they may knowingly overate a game so another similar game (thats also very good - ie RE) gets extra special treatment. You know, like subliminaly inciting incetive from other programmers they know read the mag...in this case Capcom?

Absolutely not.

Why did nobody mention that this month’s issue has a preview of Putty Squad? PUTTY SQUAD. I’ve been waiting for this game to come out since about 1993. That’s 18 years in old money.

Obviously, the early nineties Amiga platform game style of design will have dated massively, and the game will most likely be an immense disappointment after all these years, but still – PUTTY SQUAD.

Gray Matter really piqued my interest with the Demo. It felt like playing some really odd 80's sci-fi cartoon or something. A 5 is a little disappointing, but I still think I'm going to give that a go.

It's better than a 5 IMO. Worth a go simply 'cos it's different to most other stuff out there. And entertaining, and not too frustrating overall.

I loved the original game as a kid. So much so that I made little animations of it in that paint program that everyone had on their amiga. The one where you make a ball bounce and draw a street in perspective with fancy clouds.
