A good read?

I really enjoyed it. It’s very different from Station Eleven, with a dose of magic realism at times. If you were going to read her new book, Sea of Tranquility, there are some minor links with this book. I think her recent work has had a dreamlike quality in places and it works for me. Compared to some of her contemporaries, she’s an interesting author.

The Mercies by Koran Hargrave is in the daily deal today . It’s based on a true event in 17th Century Norway and the subsequent fallout . It gives nothing away as it’s on the back cover to say it’s about a small fishing community where all the men died in a storm and the village was then run and managed by women which went down as well as you might imagine with far reaching consequences.

I very much recommend it.

Took a look at my wishlist and filtered for lowest price.

Jon Krakauer - Under The Banner of Heaven is at 99p.

He wrote Into the Wild, and Into Thin Air. Can’t remember exactly what caused me to add to my wishlist but it’s non-fiction, about a murder in a Mormon community.

Flowers for Algernon, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, The Exorcist and The Martian are all books from @Stopharage's list I've read in recent years that I can recommend.

Thanks for the recommendation and, as always, to @Stopharage for compiling these really handy lists.

I've just bought Flowers For Algernon as it was a lyrical reference in a song on my favourite record of last year. I didn't understand said reference but felt that it was some 19th C poem or some such so it's great to discover the actual origin.

I don't read that much fiction but having just read two autobiographies back to back (Simon Reeve's 'Journey To Impossible Places' and Rev Richard Coles' 'Fathomless Riches', both of which I highly recommend) it should make for a pleasing change.

If you haven’t read it already, Step by Step by Simon Reeve is well worth a read too. I was really surprised by his background and upbringing and I think he comes across as a decent and engaging guy. Seems fairly grounded.

I read that one a few months ago and, yep, it is a great read. I too was surprised by his background as it was almost the opposite of my assumption of how he got to where he is...

Eversion by Alastair Reynolds is in the daily deal today. Somebody recommended it on here and I read it a month or two back. It’s the story of a group of explorers searching for a mysterious artefact (i don’t want to give anything away but it’s pretty much everything you want from a mind bending sci fi)

I bought it full price at launch and still haven't read it :)

I finally got round to reading 'Flowers for Algernon' last week, as recommended by @Stopharageand @Jamie John, and it was a wonderful, heartbreaking, read. Lots and lots to process and think about afterwards.

I have decided to read more fiction so next up will be John Darnielle (of the magnificent Mountain Goats)'s  Devil House which is not a Kindle bargain but was recommended by Steve Albini and that is more than enough for me. Also, Darnielle is a hell of a lyricist so I've high hopes.
