Dreamcast Collection

Not only is the level design pure tragedy....obstacles placed infront of you for absolutely no actual reason in the world....like a spiked bar hanging on 2 poles, waiting for you to pass under it before falling - in the middle of a little tropical island covered in rings and spring pads. The bloody controls manage to take analogue and make it digital, youre either pushing forward and progressing along some predestined route, or you're falling off and dying. Again...and again. The rings to be collected are pure memory test. The racing along sections are a joke, the platformy bits are insulting. Just...no.

I cant say enough bad things about SA, imagine placing someone infront of Mario Galaxy, and then showing them SA. They would hack your eyes out with a knife, and they;d be right to do so.

Although Sonic Adventure is very flawed, I have never agreed with the criticism of the game.

Sonic has never been Mario, and those that think that's a condemnation have already missed what makes the best Sonic games a complete joy to play. Mario has always been about slower, puzzle based game play and the main cannon of games has executed that perfectly across 2D & 3D. The classic Sonics mixed pinball physics, quick thinking traps and exploration into a beautifully designed zone; that was comparable to hooking up a perfect lap in a racing game.

Sonic Adventure keeps the hallmarks of the best Sonics and adds RPG mechanics and progression onto the template, whilst updating it into 3D. The best levels in Sonic Adventure are brilliant; from the freefall down the Sky Scrapper, the stone Snake water puzzle, the imagination of the Casino pinball tables, the brightly lit run through the tropical beach, the run down the gantry slicing through the sky along with the oddly atmospheric discovery of the floating island, there are wonderful moments in Sonic Adventure.

Yes there are horrible clipping issues, a general lack of polish and other odd design choices, but like many other games that have overarching issues, the main game is such a great experience that I forgive the obvious problems with the game.

Arguably, the definition of a flawed masterpiece.

Have you never played a Sonic game before Angel? Every sonic game has random rocks, spikes or monkeys throwing bombs at you blocking the way. What next, are you going to moan about how absurd it is that there are loops made out of rock perfectly formed or how Mario never seems to actually do any plumbing in a game?

Sonic Adventure in my mind has always been a flawed gem. It really needed an extra year of polish and every time Sega remake it (GC, PC, Xbox etc) they never take that time to sort out a couple of problems. In fact the XBLA version is the worst because of the popup. Sonic Adventure is such a beautiful looking game at times and even on launch the pop up was annoying yet they have made it worse on a more powerful console. Strangely they have fixed some of the popup, such as the big cliff in the 2nd robotnik fight but made everything else pop up even closer. This was the time Sega could have removed the popup, the slowdown and other glitches.

The intro still makes me go wow and the opening levels are lovely. In fact all the sonic levels are a blast but it is a ten year old game that was rushed and hasn't had the time put back in. Looking at the leader boards over 90,000 copies have been sold so it's done alright sales wise it seems..

I still don't understand why they are releasing Sega Bass Fishing. Firstly it's not feature packed and is the arcade game on a disc. Secondly it's been released on the wii which can at least mimic the fishing rod. Finally the xbox 360 controller won't make the game any fun to play, it was all about the rod.

But this is Sega, if they can mess something up, they will and if there is something they shouldn't do, then they most certainly will.

I was about to rattle off a post like everybody else listing all the classics they could cram on this collection. Then I remembered that this is Sega, sobered up a bit and repeatedly punched myself in the balls instead.

Crazy Taxi

Rez

Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram

Soul Calibur (Edit! Hang on, this one is Namco fffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuu)

Sega Bass Fishing

Space Channel 5 Part 2

Sonic Adventure

...is what the collection will be, at best, won't it? :(

Prove me wrong, Sega, my testicles are sore.

Bloody hell, I was a bit over-optimistic there.

Shine on Sega you crazy, useless, diamond. PLEASE REPACKAGE DR.ROBOTNIK'S MEAN BEAN MACHINE AND SONIC & KNUCKLES AND GOLDEN AXE AND ALTERED BEAST AND FUCKING ESWAT FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY WHILE YOU'RE AT IT, TOO, THANKS.

90,000 sales for a Sonic game, even a re-release, is surely a pathetic amount?

90,000 was just based from the xbox leader boards. But considering it's a port of a ten year old game on an online only service I'd say it's done pretty well. You could probably say it's sold at least 150,000 if you include the ps3.

On 2d sonic its fine, theyre obstacles. On SA, its looks absurd to see an isolated, stupidly obvious spike trap in the middle of a beach. You just walk around it.

People we have it all wrong, Sega aren't actually the lazy serial disappointers we have accused them of being! They are actually ingenious super energy effecient buissnessmen, they have some how found a way over the years to turn profit whilst doing absolutely minimal amounts of work, and I bet it's all just because they care about saving the environment and they want to use absolutely minimal resources. God bless you sega, never change!

Despite the clearly sarcastic tone, thats more or less nail on the head.

People forget that Sega are a business, reissuing their ip with minimal effort is cheap and profitable. "fixing" it or putting in lots of effort is expensive and probably not much more profitable vs the cost/time involved. It's not going to win over any critics, but that's hardly Sega's prime concern when it comes to rereleases. We don't have to like it, if it bothers you just vote with your wallets and either not buy them, or buy them on DC instead

sonic adventure, crazy taxi, space channel 5 pt2 and bass fucking fishing

Oh fuck me...to death in fact. They really have a hard time doing anything right. Compare the quotes Moose put from the Sega man on page 1 to this line up.

The quote doesn't imply the collection would be anything better than this. In fact it only goes to show that anyone expecting any more really was getting their hopes up for nothing.

I can't imagine they'd make more money from putting a load of niche games on a disk that they would releasing them separately by digital distribution.

You're right, but they could have easily announced the line-up along with the title. They knew what it was going to be all along but they couldn't resist the opportunity to dash the hopes and dreams of their fans once again.

Sega Rally Online Arcade Incoming?

What could SEGA tell Eurogamer about the Korean Game Rating Board's listing for SEGA Rally Online Arcade?

Nothing. "No comment," was all a spokesperson could offer.

The listing, filed by Sony Computer Entertainment Korea on 26th January, clears SEGA Rally Online Arcade for sale to everyone, young and old.

But the listing (spotted by Siliconera) reveals nothing more than that.

:omg:

Please be true, please be true, please be true, please be true.
