It's already a far, far better console than the PSP ever was, with more decent games out for it. I only ever played Hot Shots Golf on my PSP, because almost everything else was borderline unplayable thanks to the fucking useless 'nub' thing.

The PSP was one of my favourite consoles ever. :(

It was a JRPG fan's wet dream.

I prefer the circle pad on the 3DS. It has a bigger range of motion which means it gives finer control.

I've actually never used a 3DS so I'll take your word.

But Moz makes a good point, without 2 of them it's basically useless for "big console" style games.

So after a hard week of work and feeling I needed some kind of reward I just randomly and spontaneously picked up a VITA (from CEX of all places which I very rarely go into). Anyhoo, it was second hand, in mint condition so I just went for it with Uncharted and a 4GB memory card (will no doubt get a bigger card but just wanted to get something to get me started as I know next to NOTHING about the system).

So, all very exciting. I've never seen one up close before, have never been into this thread and don't know much about it at all. Therefore can anyone give me some good starting advice (or point me in the right direction) as I don't have a lot of time and would appreciate anything I need to know. Particular I'm keen to know about any 'must have' software (or even 'nice to have') on download as well as retail. Would Playstation Plus be worth having for this (does it even extend to the VITA?). Any advice would be VERY much appreciated as this was very much a spur of the moment purchase and it would be great to get some pointers from those in the know :)

Thanks

You made a great decision in picking up a Vita mate. Welcome to the club! Best place to get a 32GB card is amazon (£60). Download wise: Treasures of Montezuma Blitz (free, match 3 type puzzle game), Motorstorm:RC (micro machines type racer). Definitely get PS+, the free games this month are the MGS HD collection and something called Puddle next Wednesday. Uncharted, Gravity Rush are the two long term freebies IIRC. Gravity Rush is especially awesome. As is Everybody's Golf. Most people on here would suggest Persona 4 Golden as a must have too. That lot will keep you going for a while

Edit: oh, almost forgot:

Unit 13 - if you like 3rd person shooters

Sound Shapes - music platformer

Tales from Space:Mutant Blobs Attack - great platformer

Rayman HD - another great platformer

NFS:Most Wanted - fantastic racer

That's more than enough for now

Get Persona 4 Golden and thank us all later.

Other than that, Gravity Rush is excellent, Everybody's Golf is good multiplayer fun, Wipeout is worth it for the "DAT SCREEN" factor alone, but it's also got a great campaign mode and fun gameplay, and you might want to look at the digital downloads on the Store since there are gems such as Sound Shapes and Jet Set Radio to enjoy. :)

Thanks for such speedy advice everyone, this really is all rather exciting. I'm so used to knowing just about everything there is to know about a console before purchase, that to come in blind like this is fantastic. I really had no idea Playstation Plus cost so little (I think in my head it I thought it was £20 a month for some reason) so that seems like a total bargain, and thanks for all the fantastic advice on games.

Just switched it on and have been running through the very charming welcome tutorial, and now doing a system update. But even at this stage I'm blown away by the screen and how nice it all feels in my hand. I never had a PSP (although have a DS, 3DS etc) but this feels very slick so far. Persona 4 Golden it is then!!!! (I'm also signing up to PSN right now and will try Gravity Rush). I used to love playing an occasional RPG, but home life hasn't really allowed it in terms of it being a bit tricky to get enough screen time on the big screen with girlfriend not really liking watching that kind of game at all, so can't wait to get stuck into this.

And what a nice community to have had so many positive answers before I even had the thing out the box :)

A few people recommending Unit 13. I really like it but can't find it cheap anywhere ...but I have a feeling in my waters that it'll be on PS+ sooner rather than later. It had better be!

No mention of Lumines as a recommendation? My missus has been hogging my vita for that ...and I think it's on PS+ for just a few more days?

Not feeling it for MGS on vita. Controls just don't feel right. I don't remember it being as annoying on PS2, but then I wasn't a big fan.

Oddworld Strangers Wrath HD any good on Vita? I know it's a good game and looks a very well done port...but I need someone on here to push me to get it.
