Play the free Welcome app it comes with.

Get annoyed at the trickier sliding tile puzzles.

Switch off the background music.

Configure near. Load near. Get confused at near. Promise yourself you'll get to grips with it later.

Go to the shop.

Download all the free stuff from PSN+

Realise you need a bigger memory card.

Get ready to buy P4G.

Don't play the demo of Unit 13 - just buy the game.

Unit 13 is amazing. But parked in the Spec Ops game category where reviewers utterly failed to get to grips with what it was, and critiqued it with all the finesse of a pole dancing sperm whale.

Another Vita protip: do not, DO NOT, buy Retro City Rampage. Napoleon is the only person who likes it. Bear in mind his GOTY for last year was Max Payne 3. So, do the math on that one.

It's just shit. I appreciate that's lacking a proper worked through critical thought process. But it really is. Pretty much every aspect of it is badly designed, unfunny, fractured and clunky. If you enjoyed the demo, well. Yeah. OK. No accounting for taste I suppose. I'd rather David Blunkett tried inserting my Vita up my arse when I was unconscious using vitalite as a lube than ever play it again.

I got one a few weeks ago, it is nice. Aside from all the PS+ stuff I'd recommend Everybody's Golf at about six quid in the sale and Motorstorm RC at about two. Two pounds! It's basically a fancy vew version of Super Off-Road and you get the PS3 version thrown in and the saves are automatically synced and it's two pounds!

Thanks all!

I need a bigger memory card.

I just transcoded a TV show on the fly from my PC to my PS3, and then to my Vita in a different room of the house with remote play. That's a bit mad :D

morrius-psn if anyone wants to add me.

I'm going to get a 3DS XL too, my boss wants me to start going around our European sites, so I'll be sat in hotel rooms in the ass end of nowhere for half the year.

I'd recommend a PSP game for vita. Wipeout Pulse. Lovely colourful art style, smooth 60 FPS, large single player campaign.

The vita version of wipeout runs at 25-30fps it seems to me, and for such a fast twitchy series it just doesn't feel responsive enough. Wipeout Pulse is my second most played game on the system.

Oh and get Ys Seven too. If you love action RPGs.

Why is this awesome handheld struggling? Great games, great tech. price seems good. What can they do to turn sales around? if already discussed apologies.

Its just...3DS was struggling due to lack of games...so out came 2 big hitting games. Vita has it all. Awareness? Maybe they need to redirect a big console game to it as an exclusive for vita only. Like the long lost 'Agent' by rockstar or something. Probably more likely an existing franchise.

Maybe this vita/ps3 cross game somehow works against them as people see it as the same as the ps3 they already own.

CoD should have been the system seller we were waiting for, but the developers ballsed it up. An exclusive GTA would sell systems, as would Monster Hunter in the East. Other than that though, what else could do it? Sony just don't have the same character pool to draw from as Nintendo unfortunately.

Edit: a MGS game could shift some systems as well. FFVII HD exclusive = me creaming my pants

I find myself unexpectedly today in the same position that Morrius was yesterday. Question re PSN+ on Vita: once a time-limited download title has been added to your downloads list, you can d/l it any time within the duration of your sub, even if the free download offer has ended, yeah? I know that's the case with PSN+ on PS3 and assume it's the same here - in fact it's almost certain to be - but I thought I'd better check, just in case of daftness on the part of Sony.

(The title is Uncharted, it's too big to fit on the 8GB card, and, although I could, I don't really want to d/l it to the PS3 now just to take up space there waiting for its day out on the Vita. Though that's a viable alternative, I suppose.)

My big(ger) memory card turns up tomorrow, can I whack it in and redownload everything? Do the savegames sit separately to the game files, or are they on the card too? Will I have to do some hokey cokey file management?

I'm having an awkward time getting used to the device. While it's quite logical, it has the Sony problem of being unnecessarily complicated and not immediately that impressive - it doesn't grab you like a 3DS or an iDevice seem to. You need to put a bit of work in to get the most out of it! Using the PS3 as a server of sorts to hold all my Vita crap seems to make sense, I've downloaded LBP, Wipeout, Frobisher says, Uncharted, Gravity Rush, Pinball arcade etc. Gravity Rush seems great, LBP seems like one of those 'yep, it works' kind of games where you marvel at what a good job they did and then stop playing it. But I'll stick with it! It's mainly for travelling rather than sitting at home and playing, so I'll load it up with goodies and probably leave it in a drawer for the time being :D

I had a play with near, the trophies bit, group chat and some other stuff and bounced straight off all of it. I might as well have been holding the Vita upside down for all the sense they seemed to make!

What's your PSN ID, Gorf? Shall we bumble through together?

Cheers Mike.

I must say that my recently renewed PS+ membership - the discounted three months for £7.99 - tipped me over the edge into the purchase when I spotted a mint pre-owned Vita for £150. Gravity Rush, Uncharted, Pinball Arcade, MotorStormRC (sorta), and, from Wednesday, Lumines, will easily justify the price over the next three months (and that's without the PS3 content). The only title I'll actually be buying will be Persona 4 Golden. I'll probably flog the device, the card and Persona in the summer and not have spent more than about £60-80 on the lot taking the sell-on value into account. Not bad really.

I'll be sorry when Sony get themselves out of the rut they've been in and end insanity such as PS+; or at least, when they make it far less generous than it currently is.

Good Christ.

Yeeeesssss. That's... erm... horrific.

No interest in Soul Sacrifice? It looks quite interesting.

Aye, maybe. No. I dunno. It does remind me of the other reason I was looking at Vitas - and the only one that'd make me keep it beyond the 3 month PS+ tie-in (unless something else happens in the meantime) - PSO2. That's if the Vita version gets a timely release in Europe. Well, as timely as the PC version, which isn't timely at all. And as long as it's not rubbish anyway.

So yeah, I probably will get rid once the three months are up, come to think of it. But in the meantime, it's quite a nice piece of kit aside from Sony's usual terrible UI. Christ, they make sleek-looking hardware and then dump this rubbish on it. Why they don't go super-minimal with the look and feel, and why they don't make things a bit more seamless, is beyond me. Even just having some more classy icons would do it, a less garish colour scheme, instead of these horrible blobs floating all over the place. And ads in the recently-used apps screen? Yeeuch. It's like the hardware and the OS are made by different companies.

Anyway, moan over. It's a nice machine despite that, and subsidised by PS+ it's a fairly attractive commercial proposition at the moment, too.
