Anyone using a three sim with their Vita? Had some debate with a guy in Three over if it needed a data sim or a phone sim. A data sim costs twice as much for more data than I need, but the Three guy didn't think a phone sim would work. As i only popped in there in passing I though I'd ask you guys.

I'm not paying £10 a month just for occasional Vita use!

Bought a Three data sim of amazon for £12 for 3 months of data at 1GB a month. It's more data than I could ever need but £4 a month aim as bad as Vodaphone which is £5 for 250mb a month. I've not found a better deal than that but woul love a pay per GB approach.

At a guess, the system needs to have the resources free to handle the extra processing. Doing it at a system level may introduce too many complications, whereas implementing it on a case by case basis allows them to take advantage of free processes within the game engine itself. Probably easier to do when the game goes gold and isn't under constant changes.

It's not a mass use feature so it makes sense to see if the game has lasting appeal before using dev time.

Probably because it's enormously flawed and doesn't really work properly.

Hmmm not sure I'm with you on that, I've played quite a bit of remote play on the PSP and it was pretty poor despite being a neat feature.

On Vita (with a Slim PS3 which has Wireless N I believe) It's significantly better. Playing ICO on Vita via remote play looked very good, gone are the terrible lossy artifacts of PSP remote play (which New remote play does not support according to the notes) and it seemed to be very responsive as well. Perfectly playable, and definitely a good option if the main TV is taken over by someone else. From a dev perspective I don't think that remote play has any overhead at all it's just a switch in the build process so technically all first party titles could be patched to support it.

Are there any side scrolling shooters for this yet ffs ?

Sine Mora is being ported to Vita soon, along with the PS3 version. One of the devs put up an interesting technical breakdown of his work on the X360 version over at B3D, said he was too lazy to powerpoint it so just dumped it as a forum post :)

Cave are too busy stopping going bust to support any console these days.

I must have dreamt that they were still releasing 360 games ;)

For the record, they haven't stopped console support in the same way they haven't stopped arcade or iOS support. They released a 360 game in April and recently announced another.

Is Machinarium supposed to be on the Vita store? I grabbed it for PS3 but can't find it in the Vita. Or did I get the wrong end of the stick that it was coming out on Vita?

It was never officially going to come out on Vita, but the delays & rumours about the PSN release were pointing very heavily in that direction.

I'm glad I can finally play it - crossplay for this one seems a bit... pointless now.

Whilst remote play is not as good as playing on the PS3 or playing natively on the Vita it serves a purpose and it works pretty much flawlessly.

Until I can connect at work to my PS3 and play 'flawlessly' (which you can't and might never be able to) it's a pointless feature. Years on from the first time I actually managed to connecr with a PSP and it's still a laggy mess that only works half the time. Indeed it works a lot better now from close range over an ad hoc network and whilst I understand the appeal of that it has limited uses for most people.

It's a good feature, I just don't think the implementation is quite up to snuff. I got it working about as well as I reasonably can, and while the lag is almost unnoticeable, the image quality is still a bit crap even using the +1 setting. It'd also be nice to be able to switch back to the TV without having to quit the game.

How many original games do Cave actually put out on consoles? or are they just tarted-up Arcade ports still? The last major news story I read about Cave was they were going to focus on social games as their finances were a bit shit.

Not really a fan of bullet hell score attack shooters, which seem to be their speciality, and unfortunately the only sub-genre of the shooter that still seems (barely) commercially viable, always preferred the more trad horizontal ones myself.

For some reason this post made me want an HD remake of Thunder Force 5...

It's not really surprising they would do so many ports, it's a pretty good way of running a company, and most of the ports were well done and full of modes. Only a couple of weeks ago Asada spoke at a MS event saying they had titles to be announced at a later date and he talked about things he would like to do, hardly words of a company abandoning the market. They did cancel their supposed Vita games, but I can understand why they did that as its sales weren't very good at the time.

Cave's financial status is up for debate of course but they don't sound like a company at deaths door, just one looking to ensure a stable operating base. Perfectly sensible, I suspect they will no longer build their own arcade hardware in order to contribute to that (they recently ported Akai Katana to Taito's Nesica Live hardware, which makes a lot of sense.)

I would love another Crying (Bio-Hazard Battle), under-rated co-op shooter, it was even a console original.

Crying was a great shooter, man that takes me back, I brought a copy back from Japan many years ago (it was a new release) loved it to bits and then some c*nt nicked it ... Never picked up the PAL version because Biohazard battle didn't sound as cool as Crying and the title screen didn't look nearly as good.

Ecolibrium will be free to download from tomorrow. Aesthetically I find it's reminiscent of Spore, although it seems more concerned with collecting than creating; it might be closer to Viva Piñata in mechanical terms. Here's a trailer:

Let's Fish! Hooked On is coming to the West. Honestly this is the first I've heard of it, but I know some people like their fishing games and the developer seems to have plenty of experience with the genre.

Also, just a reminder that New Little King's Story is supposed to be out on the 28th. LBP is out the week before, which I'd definitely recommend as from what I've played it's the best entry in the series.

Yeah, maxing out the initial investment in the Arcade version makes perfect sense, I suppose that makes them really an Arcade company still, the home support exists purely to maximise ROI.

The Vita game was supposely going to be an original product, not an Arcade port:

Q: It’s early in development, but what can you tell us about the shooting game you’re making for PlayStation Vita?

A: When we announced our PlayStation Vita games we mentioned one of them is a shooter. We’re just getting started on it so there isn’t much I can say about it at the moment. Any platform we release a game on whether it be Xbox 360 or Vita we make our games specifically for that platform. The shooting game we make for Vita will be a title that matches the characteristics of that hardware.

Q: So, it’s an original game and not an arcade port?

A: Yes, we are planning for it to be an original game. We will still make ports of our arcade games in parallel to this project, but we want to make original games as well.
