You can, but you wouldn't be able to go back to your normal account without formatting your memory card again. You didn't have to do that previously, but firmware 1.8 locks your memory card to an account and the only way to switch is to format it.

How do you format your memory card.

I can't be arsed messing around with US and UK accounts. On my PS3, yeah, but not with all the faffing that needs to be done on the Vita. The Crash games and Abe play just fine in 50Hz - either they were optimised back in the day, or it's just because they play like I remember them. The FF games are weird in 50Hz though, I'll give you that.

today i received MGS HD (american). I do not own it on ps3 but can easily rent a uk copy.

I've created my save while signed in, does this mean that loading up MGSHD on ps3 and loading the transfarred save pop the trophies? or is it just glorified save sharing without the reward?

I've only ever played the PAL versions of the FF games so I doubt its going to bother me at all. I think the extra speed and borders might seem weird to me if I went the US route!

Does the PSone emulator emulate the analogue controller. That'd be a significant advantage over the PSP equivalent (for newer games, anyway).

Yes.

Emulation options are limited. Pretty much the same as on the PSP; Bilinear filtering, fast disc speed, volume increase and screen size. With controller options, you can turn analogue mode on/off (default is off) and rather pointlessly, remap face and L1/R1 shoulder buttons to each other.

The most idiotic thing about PS1 emulation is that L2/R2/L3/R3 are mapped to the rear touch pad, with no option to turn this off or move them to the analogue sticks. The games I've tested that use L2/R2, all had them being pressed continually by accident, when my fingers touched the rear pad. Other people have reported struggling to find the 'sweet spot' on the rear pad to using L2/R2. The implementation is awful.

Ah well, that's the end of that for me then. I play my Vita with my hands resting on the touchpad all the time ( and don't play games that use it ) so if I can't turn it off, I won't be playing games that use the triggers.

How did the PSP cope with this, out of interest? ( Not the rear touchpad obviously, the extra buttons! )

Wow, I figured the button configuration options would be for exactly that. There's no way I'll be playing anything that makes use of R2 and L2 then, the rear touchpad is a terrible replacement for buttons.

On the PSP, you can assign any button to any function. So you can either use the analogue stick as shoulder buttons (press it left for L2, right for R2, up for L2+R2 together) or use the d-pad for the shoulder buttons and the analogue stick emulates the d-pad.

It's worth noting the PSP's emulator features improved over time. Originally, there were only a few presets. I fully expect the Vita's options to expand to include full button mapping eventually.

Has the slowdown in the PAL versions of the Final Fantasy games always been the case or is this a new thing from when they were made available on the PSN?

Always. Blissful ignorance back then, though. :)

The rear touchpad is terrible in general. I own 12 Vita games and it doesn't benefit a single one. In fact in some games like Disgaea 3, it's a hindrance. It's a good job you can switch it off.

I had my first crash last night. I was transferring some PSOne titles over and the Vita froze halfway through. I had to hard reset it and start the download again.

I'd be surprised if you can share a save between the US Vita and UK PS3 versions. You definitely can't use a US PS3 save with the UK PS3 game.

Its always been the case from the original PSOne versions up until Final Fantasy XII when they finally started optimising the PAL releases.

Always. Blissful ignorance back then, though. :)

Thanks. I really don't want to have to switch to a US account and lose my PSN games. I guess I'll just go for the PAL versions. It's still dissapointing to learn that the US versions are so much better. They're some of my favourite games off all time and the only releases I've ever played are being described here as a disgrace. Blissful ignorance indeed.

If there's a sale to coincide with the update (I think they've hinted there will be), I'll probably double-dip on a couple of the Final Fantasy games to see how they look.

I'm playing Front Mission 3, which I've never played the NTSC version of, and to be honest PSOne games look so shitty these days anyway that I don't think it will really make too much difference unless you've played an NTSC version really recently.

Of course, they'll still be exactly the same as you remember them in terms of speed and all that. It's just a painful fact-of-life that these days of HD-resolutions and everything running at 60Hz no matter what the region really shows up what a shit deal we used to get in the PAL territories. It's even worse that Sony and Nintendo still pump out the shitty PAL versions of their retro releases when virtually everybody in the UK now has an HD telly that can happily play the NTSC versions of those games (even most people still stuck with CRTs probably still have one that would be up to the job).

I finally took the plunge on Persona 3 Portable. I really had no idea what it was but just felt the wave of positivity towards the game from here.

A 30 minute quick go before bed turned into a 3 hour/ 3am marathon! Now I'm trying to work out where I can import Persona 4 from in October!

I'm in!

So am I just unlucky or is there a battery drain issue if putting the system on standby while running a PSone game? On a full charge I put Arc The Lad in sleep mode last night and went to boot my Vita up today, only to have it not respond to anything. I was worried it was broken but plugging it in soon revealed it was out of juice. Brilliantly enough it resumed exactly where I had left Arc The Lad. Which was nice.
