Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors

Just got round to playing this - classed as adventure/survival horror, it's a visual novel with room escape puzzles that works really well. Thought I'd give it a quick look last night before bed and three hours vanished in the blink of an eye. Really worth a look if you fancy a change in pace over Christmas.(US import)

My fiancé is currently making her way through this with my help at the minute. Brilliant game. Three endings so far and not one of them has been at all good or positive. Brilliant stuff though, especially the way it handles you re-playing through areas you've went through before with all the rapid text skipping and stopping when a new decision arises.

Definitely want to check this one out, it's not quite on the top of my list though. If you're a fan of English language visual novels, first of all my condolences, but you may be interested to know this is directed by one of the writers from Ever17.

Roughly how long does it take to reach the first ending? Presumably repeat plays are much quicker too?

Some of the exchanges between characters are priceless, but I've just had one that had me thinking, we are talking about what I think we're talking about now, aren't we? Followed by much laughter at the lines that followed.

If you are even slightly into games such as this, buy it without hesitation. Another wonderful surprise.

Rudderless - it seems designed for multiple playthroughs as it's impossible to see the whole story from one or even several - I've read that there are six endings, including one 'proper' one. I'm nearing the end of my first at about the six hour mark. Subsequent plays have a skip text button to expediate things.

I tried the Flash demo briefly when it was first launched, didn't really know what to make of it, probably need to play through that before wondering whether this game is to my taste, but then again, I haven't felt compelled to play the Phoenix Wright series yet either.

Chunsoft seem rather adept at these types of games, they were behind Machi (which came 5th in a poll for best game ever in Famitsu a few years ago) and its spiritual successor 428 scored 40/40.

Thanks for the info. I figured it would require multiple playthroughs to get the 'true' ending. The text-skip thing is a great idea - though presumably if you're choosing a different path you won't be able to skip new dialogue.

I'd guess so - it also greys out previous choices to prevent frustration. The whole package is incredibly user friendly. Navigating, checking, manipulating, combining and saving are all just effortless.

They've sat down and decided to do what makes common sense for the benefit of the players, rather than trying to show them how clever they are. As a result, they've ended up looking quite clever.

Edit- now onto my second 'phase' - the game can't be finished by playing through once as additional details of the mystery are layered on upon returning, so replay isn't really designed to be optional - you have to return to find out what happened.

I ordered it from Play Asia as it comes out cheap for some reason (about £25) but only if you go for slow boat shipping. Amazon.com have it in stock and will ship to the UK but shipping bumps the price up massively, particularly if you want it in a hurry. VGP didn't have stock and I didn't think to check Movietyme, possibly because I'm also out of the loop for this stuff.

Whats the actual story like though(always the most important thing in this type of game), is it just a blatant anime style rip off of Saw like it seems, or is it actually any good with some originality to it?

Also I'm confused by the meticritic it say 90 based on five critic reviews but then when you click to see them, it says there are no critic reviews available, is Metacritic just having a bit of a meltdown or something?

The writing reminds me of the Phoenix series in tone - ghastly goings on that don't take themselves too seriously at times - R rated Scooby-Doo, I suppose (some of the content is harder than PW).

Anyway - finished four endings, including the true ending, so it's in the trading folder now.
