Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Jon, I really don't see the smithing as an exploit, certainly not how I did it. I just decided to spend about a week or so of in game time forging daggers and some armour to get me to level 60. I think it's safe to assume if you did anything for this length of time you would improve at it. I don't see how it's any different from spending the same time out in the woods twatting things with your sword and leveling that up.

Yeah, I suppose. I guess it's just the ease in which you can level by creating endless iron daggers that goes against the grain a bit.

I don't really blame anyone for doing it, but Bethesda could have made it more interesting by increasing levelling from forging bigger/better/more difficult items.

It just seems like a cheeky shortcut really.

Anyway, has anyone got any pointers on the couple of broken quests I posted about last night?

Flogging this dead horse a little bit more, I was discussing this with some mates (while playing Skyrim) the other day. I don't have an issue with forging 100 daggers etc, that bit is fine, it's what a traning Blacksmith might do - my issue is with the econmics of it. Even if practicing, you wouldn't forge something unless there was a market for it. Fine for us the player, just sell them to your local Merchant who happily buys them spending ALL his money. But what about that Merchant? Surely the market for Iron daggers is not that great that he can justifiy spending all his spare cash. Couple this with the fact that 5 days later he seems to have shifted them all and has his money back... ?? The conclusion we came to was exports.. we forget that there are several other Provinces in Tamriel, these Merchants are happy to buy 100 Iron daggers as they know that they can pass them onto the next Kajjit trade Caravan that passes through and export them to Cyrodiil, Morrowind etc.

So now I'm happy with it... :)

Also yes I agree, if at level 10 Smithing - Iron daggers should greatly effect your skill as you're Novice, but if level 60 Smithing.. creating Iron Daggers should have very little or no effect on leveling, as you would prob be able to make them in your sleep and wouldn't again much experience from it.

Also, if you don't like it.. don't do it. The crafting skills are by no means required, there are plenty of powerful items out there in shops or dungeons that will be good enough to compete with, or look bad ass.

I got up to about lvl 90 in smithing without just making daggers - mainly because I didn't realise that's how it worked so I made loads of different things. I just made daggers for 98-100 though. The shame.

I'd be careful about using this expolit, it can seriosuly break the difficultness of the enemy levels.

Farkas' eyes scare me.

Also, he's been about a bit, watched folks become werewolves and stuff - and still he goes 'wow - just... wow' whenever he walks into a larger than average cave.

There's a bit of David Bowie meets Clarence the Cross Eyed Lion going on there.

I finally clicked with the game over the weekend. It's really important to get to grips with smithing and enchancments I've found. I also didn't realise that the spell tome books needed to be read to be added to the magic menu  . Now I have a wider range of magic, a powered up flame shout and a blade that has been improved and enhanced to draw health from my opponent, I AM ROCKING!!!!!

It's not that bad as long as you make sure you have the resources to create the highest level weapons and make sure that you apply perks to smithing. If it's done that way then the difficulty in the enemies is offset by the increased power of your weapons and armour. If you just spam iron daggers with all your cash, piss the perks about and then don't have any money or access to perks to make the best stuff you'll be fucked.

there is no way on EARTH I'm spending hours just crafting stuff... that behaviour is just WEIRD

I never did any crafting in the Fallout games and I must say I'm not too keen to max everything out in Skyrim either. The only thing I find interesting are alchemy (mainly to create healing potions and poisons to spike my weapons with) and enchanting weapons and apparel for extra effects. Although I probably will need to upgrade my smithing skills if I want to get the epic armour, or is it loot?

When your level gets high enough enemies will start dropping Ebony/Daedric weaponry, and the equivalent gear can be found in chests (perhaps even on enemies, my level isn't that high yet).

However, you won't be able to upgrade them to their full potential without the corresponding Smithing perks.

My blacksmithing is in the high 90's and I've got a daedric bow and will shortly have some lovely dragonscale armour (or whatever the light armour version is called) in about 10 daggers' time. However, my enchanting is lagging behind at about 80. How does the duel enchant perk work - do you have to do them both at once or can I enchant my new gear now and then add an additional enchant when I reach 100 and get the perk?

I've pretty much focused on Archery, Light Armor, One Handed weapons, Destruction, Smithing and Enchanting

Smithings a right pain in the arse but itll be worth it when I can rock some sweet ass flawless Dragon Armor.

One thing I love about this game compared it Oblivion is not needing repair hammers, that pissed me off.

Where the hell can i find a flawless sapphire ? I dug one out of some iron once, but since then 120 hours later ... nothing.

Go speak to Dravin in Merryfair Farm & do a quest to get reward item which is Flawless Sapphire

If I remember correctly, there's a certain member of the Thieve's Guild who carries one.

Sapphire :P

Continuing with this Smithing m'larky... I'm playing a Paladin type character and for roleplaying pruposes everything except Iron, Steel and Platemail just doesn't look right on my character anyway. I end up selling everything else so prob no point in making it. Although I want to make Dragon Armour just because I'm the Dragon Born... my mannequin can wear it.

One thing that's starting to bug me is how you get attacked by EVERYONE. All I'm doing is walking the path next to their fort, I jut want to get to somewhere, be on my merry way. But no, these fuckers keep wanting to attack me.

For a little while that jarred but now, in contrast to McMond's presumably noble Paladin character, my toon is a fricking badass that does what he wants (mainly making daggers and ignoring the main plot) and killing idiots that stupidly attack me feels like a natural extension of that.

Any knobber that tries to attack me on the road gets a Fus Roh Dah in the face before I slice 'em to pieces with my trust dual Ebony Swords

See, I want to build up my dual wielding but am worried it will make me extremely vulnerable not being able to block / defend. Plus, that is the trademark technique of Spartacus in the TV show and he was fucking crackers.

Have you offset your dual wielding by getting armoured up like a old, decrepid King?
