Can someone tellme if villages and towns get trashed depending on which side you're on? I only ask because I noticed that towns and their Jarls seem to favour one side or the other (but the guards seem to wear roughly the same armour so I'm guessing they're all Imperial)?

The guards are unique to each hold and stay the sane no matter what happens in the war. As far as the cities getting trashed:

They do but only temporarily.

From memory your reward is about three and sixpence.

Yep! It's not the money, just that it should be completed and isn't. Ah well.

Also, I'm sure this has been covered at least a bazillion times already but this game... Amazing.

I've been playing this for a good few hours now (where do you find the time stat on the 360?) and have lumped all of my perks into Archery, Sneaking and Lockpicking. The only thing is, I'm now trying my hand at Alchemy, Smithing and Enchanting but don't have any perks thrown into their respective constellations. Is this going to hamper me if I want to make decent weapons/potions?

Anyone had a glitch on one of the sidequests? It's in the task where you're asked to

find the Amulet of Arkay for the priest, Andurs in the Catacombs in Whiterun. I've cleared the catacomb - which is tiny - but there's no amulet.

I had trouble finding that one too. Had to look it up. It's..

in the little room right at the end of the catacombs on the table that's pretty much right in front of you as you go in the door. It's partially hidden by something (possibly a plant).

I've been carrying the amulet around for about 90 hours after picking it up at random, but have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing with the thing. Presumably the relevant quest is somewhere in the list of 50 squillion active ones, but I favour the "roam around the countryside until you happen to stumble upon someone important and complete a quest be accident" approach.

I like the fact that the beginning of the game clearly sets up that the Empire are the bad guys (they're trying to execute you for basically no reason, after all), but then as you actually play the game everything you hear about the Stormcloaks just make them sound worse and worse. They're basically just seperatist white supremacists.

(I'm not sure if my post needs spoiler tags, because it isn't exactly stuff that happens in game, it's just world-building conceptual stuff. However, read at your own risk.)

I must admit that I chose the Stormcloaks just because I went to Windhelm first, and didn't even visit Solitude until much later in the game, and before I realised what was happening I was already a Stormcloak! But seeing as I was a Stormcloak I justified their cause to myself.

The Stormcloaks allow people of all races to join them as long as they are loyal to Skyrim. They are not racists or supremacists per se. I tried to imagine the anger an average Nord would feel towards dark elves and high elves. The Aldmeri Dominion forced the Empire to outlaw the worship of Talos as one of the conditions of ending the great war, and Talos is the most cherished god for most Nords.

The real-world equivalent would be if there had been a world war which was resolved by Muslims forcing the western world to outlaw Christianity. How would the average Muslim be treated in the UK? That's why Nords are racist toward elves. Really, imagine if Christianity had been outlawed by a Muslim superpower: it would legitimise movements like the BNP, as millions of British people feel outraged about having their religion taken away from them.

Since the Stormcloaks can't really fight the Thalmor (who are perhaps the real political villains of the story), they have to rebel against the Imperial government who are enforcing Thalmor ways in Skyrim.

I suppose your choice should be: "How easily can the Thalmor dominate Tamriel if I choose Imperials or Stormcloaks?" Okay, I will spoiler this stuff just in case:

At first you're supposed to think that the Empire are in bed with the Thalmor and are therefore "bad", and that the Stormcloaks are haters of the Thalmor and are therefore "good". However, as the game goes on there are some hints -- in notes and journals, etc -- that the Empire are preparing some big important moves to fight against the Thalmor and they will need the strength and support of Skyrim to help them. There are also hints that Ulfric Stormcloak was (unwittingly) conditioned by the Thalmor while imprisoned by them during the great war, and they let him escape, and they may use him again as a resource if he becomes politically powerful.

So I think Tamriel is more fucked if you help Ulfric and defeat the Imperials. It will lead to the Thalmor taking total control of Tamriel even more easily, which will harm the Nordic way of life even worse in the long run.

Oh well!

Yup, hence why I'm now torn as to which bunch to side with; both seem like dicks.

Yes is the answer. Playing as a Stormcloak-supporter, major battles took place in

Whiterun and Solitude.

This causes some permanent damage geometry to those cities afterwards, and replaces Imperial guards with Stormcloak guards, but otherwise doesn't harm the cities in any practical way. All the shops and citizens are still there afterwards.

I'm 60 hours in and am spending a lot of time levelling up my skills. I'm determined to max smithing and enchanting and am on about 82 at each. I'm not finding the side quests as much of a draw ATM. I am thinking of maxing these out, doing a few more sides along the way but petty much heading down the main quest line now. There are just too many other games out there to play for me to invest more than 80 hours I reckon.

I still think its an amazing game. I am just finding myself flagging a bit. I completed Fallout 3 in sonething like 14 hours so this is hardcore for me!

I've been playing this for a few hours, its great. I have no idea what I'm doing with the leveling or perks.

Just choose a skill you want to focus on early on I focused on one-handed & now I'm mixing it up from Light Armour to Speech & Destruction Magic

Fixed.

I don't know about anyone else, but if the country was largely the same and not run by some crazy Muslim government and the only real difference was that Christianity was illegal I don't know if I'd ever be able on stop thanking the members of that particular group of Muslims.

The best thing to say about the Civil war questline is that it gives a sneaky archer type the opportunity to switch over to sword and board for a while and get some other skills trained up. To be honest, I found it hard at times to distinguish the enemy (stormcloaks) from friends in some of the battles so there was a fair bit of friendly fire.

Definitely seeing some significant deterioration in technical performance now though - frequent short freezes, large graphical glitches such as my house in Solitude disappearing. Not good.

Things I would really like to see improved in the next ES game:

Having more racks and shelves where items can be securely displayed in your home - almost nothing stays in place unless you use the weapon racks or the bookshelves. There need to be "sticky" surfaces.

Having the ability to fight on horseback - now that I have Shadowmere literally shadowing my every move it would be cool to be able to fight bears and trolls without dismounting.

More opportunities to "do a Hitman" and use uniforms and clothing sets as disguises - surely a wasted opportunity when there are so many different sets available. Afaik it is only available once during the Thalmor embassy quest (especially for elves).

I think the way they introduce you to both sides for the civil war is done really poorly location wise.

Solitude is way too far in the early stages of the game to reach and even after 60 hours play I've only just stumbled in there. The main quest lines naturally push you towards the Stormcloaks by making you meet them first then having too huge a distance to go hear the Imperial side of things. I think they would have been better installing an Imperial recruiting station at Whiterun so you can hear their side of things then when you push to Winterhelm you get the next point of view.

Thanks man, that's what I wanted to know. I've been playing about with the

Greybeard peace talks mission

, just reloading to see what the different outcomes could be and it seems like the best option for me might be imperial because

you can push the negotiations to ensure Whiterun stays imperial and also that the Stormcloaks give up Riften! That suits me just fine, as those as the two towns I have property in (and are the places I visit most).

I don't yet know if that means I need to fight for them... will report back! :)

I just ditched the Arch Mage Robes for a nice set of enchanted glass armour. Not quite the same magika regen bonus at 65% but I've gone up from about 45 armour to nearly 200 so I can get stuck in a bit more. I'm not a fan of defensive spells.

Is there a good guide somewhere as to which creatures give which souls? I'm fed up with filling larger gems with smaller souls or not having a gem big enough for humanoid souls. What's bigger than Grand Gems and where do I get them from?

Or get the Black Azura Star and dont have it cleansed. You'll be able to capture any humanoid souls, and its one of the biggest gems (and reusable)

I cant believe some of the MASSIVE spoilers in this thread. Good job guys on those using the spoiler tags though.

I'm just came to the end of doing all the side guild quests. Ive only really got the main questline to do now then?

There are a bunch of sidequests not related to guilds - pick them up by chatting in towns and to innkeepers.

Also, there are a bunch of quests associated with dungeons which you have to visit to activate.

The College of Winterhold (mage stuff) quest line gives you access to a bed and storage in the college during the very first quest you do there, you could use that as a drop off point even if you don't intend to do the rest of the quests right now.

edit: From the uespwiki.

Available upon enrolling in the College of Winterhold. Be advised that while the wardrobes in the room are safe, the barrels are not

Enchantments are learned by disenchanting items.
