Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I dunno if this is a bug or what but I'm on the quest where I have to get the Elder Scroll and I'm going in the Dwarven location to where the quest locator is but there's nothing there, it's the bit where there are loads of differing levels so I'm guessing I'm not on the right level but I've been exploring around there for ages with no joy. Anyone know exactly where I have to go?

Have you used the Atunement Sphere at any point (to open up a passage below you)? It's a bit difficult to distinguish where you might be, but once you find a place to use it you should be able to get to Blackreach which contains the location of the Elder Scroll.

I have done and completed:

1) The thieves guild chain

2) Did the nord side of the war

3) Become the leader of the companions

4) Done the drinking contest (which lead around all over the place).

5) Done the mage set of missions in the northern town

...and many others I can't think of right now.

As you say, I could have started the Dark Brotherhood quest chain but as they had already put a hit out on me I couldn't be bothered trying to guess which one had the hit out on them and killed her instead which led to ultimately wiping them out. Lost the save now so its gone a bit too far.

I think restarting and trying a different combination might be better now

@Oh Danny Boy - Couldn't have put it better myself

I've been fast travelling a lot but all of that in 48 hours seems bonkers, how many locations have you discovered? Have you become the thane of anywhere yet?

Still though, that's still value for money I'd say, less than a quid per hour's play, not too shabby. ;)

Yep, its been one of the best games I have played in a while and definitely worth the money :) I am the Thane of 2 or 3 places now where have either have to help x number of people or buy property. I am sure it also adds a lot of value trying it from purely a magic side though and leaving with the imperial instead of nord at the beginning. Just for comparison, what are the specs of your armour / weapon after 100+ hours of play?

[EDIT] Forgot to say. I mostly do fast travelling for missions if I have discovered that location or need to return somewhere. Its very rare that I haven't discovered somewhere nearby I can go from. Also, I haven't even looked at enchanting or smithing yet. All my weps + armour are found in the game. Not sure on how many locations I have discovered, i'll have to take a look when I get home.

Tbh, I haven't actually checked my hours played for a while so I might not even be that much further from 48 hours anyway but it seems like I've played it loads (but not in a bad way). I'm also an Imperial too...

I think I actually played it a bit 'wrongly' because I knew from Obliv that thieves and specifically DB had good missions so I fast tracked my way to Riften and then got into the DB stuff, now I've generally only got Misc quests and help people out to become Thane in a few other places, which are invariably not as good as the guild missions.

I'd love it if in these sort of games if at a certain point (like at level 30, or x amount of hours in) a whole new guild / quest line thing turned up to combat this exact issue. Although it's still very enjoyable, you've pretty much seen most things (to a certain degree) after a certain amount of time.

But... but.. you murdered the old lady at the orphanage?

Killing defense-less old ladies makes you feel like a big man does it?

This is a totally rational act whatever your character's morality - she is a complete bitch and the world is better off without her (the kids certainly think so).

I suppose fast travelling explains a lot. It's a shame if you didn't undertake any epic journeys on foot such as Whiterun to Winterhold or to Riften or to Solitude - these seemed to take me ages in each case since the local wildlife was much more of a handful to cope with in those days, and there are so many diversions en route.

It sounds also as if you have been very quest focussed if you have not got into smithing or enchanting yet. These don't take up a huge amount of time in themselves but there is a whole sub set of activity around them e.g pickpocketing trinkets to enchant, looking for gear with new enchantments in shops to disenchant, going out to kill wildlife with a soul trap weapon in order to stock up on petty soul gems, so I guess it all adds up. Then there is alchemy which is quite time consuming since again there is a sub set of routines to go through there.

Have you found all 20 shouts? There are some pretty meaty dungeons along the way.

What about the daedric quests?

I wouldn't have if someone ordered me to....pride an' all that. Plus she was rude to me. And it was for the kids......

Shut up it was a perfectly justifiable killing :P

Yep, I would definitely say I have been focusing on the quests rather than anyting else which I guess explains the time taken.

I can't say for sure but I would estimate I have somewhere between 15-20 shouts so far (probably not got them all yet). I have done a couple of daedric quests including one...

where you get a staff which spawns one for you for 90 seconds. Another mission involves a shrine in a house and a request to go rescue a priest so he can harvest his soul or something (not sure if thats daedric). Another one is where this bloke asks you to collect 3 bits of a sword or medallion and then to go up and pray and some massive statue on top of a hill - I had to kill a few there and raid his shrine.

There may be others but I can't think of them right now.

Definitely looking forward to the DLC though to see what they can add to it :)

I was highly amused when I did Mehrunes Razor, I took Shadowmere up there and somehow managed to get off him when his front hooves were on the altar, so the whole bit of cutscene and chat were with Shadowmere standing half on the atar at a stupid angle. Tickled me.

On another note, there's someone at work called Mehrun, (it might be a more common name than I'm aware but it's the first time I've come across it) and I had to have a chat with her the other day and throughout the whole thing wanted to ask her about her razor....

That quest really annoyed me. I know it's meant to be your way into the DB, and so they don't want to close that route to you, but I really wish I had an option to finish the quest and help the children without killing her. Encouraging her to retire, persuading the jarl to do something, anything. But no, all I could do was kill her or not deal with the problem.

It's not like it had to be the only route in either. The assassins who attack you could have provided a starting point for joining or destroying the order, and the Oblivion mechanic of recruitment after a murder wasn't bad.

I actually never even entertained the thought that you could wipe out the dark brotherhood. Mind. Blown.

I really wonder how much stuff I'll have missed because I spend too much time playing it "normally" rather than thinking a bit and wondering what would happen if I tried something different to what the game told me to do.

As I'm on my holidays this week I thought I'd buy Skyrim and enjoy a bit of adventuring over the festive period. After traipsing round town, I came back empty handed as everywhere is sold out. I'm pinning my hopes on Sainsburys when I head over there tonight.

I'm annoyed that I missed out on the drinking contest quest.

(Spoiler'd because I don't want to, erm, spoil it for anyone else)

I saw the guy and started it, but then didn't follow up the next step (woke up in that stone city and went on my merry way).

Later on I happened upon a hag in the middle of a swamp and *BANG* I've done most of the quest it seemed :(

There's one fun bit you skipped, but I think that's pretty much it from what I remember.

By the way, this quest is probably my favourite bit of the game.

I had not been to Markarth at that point, so I was just busy doing a quest when *BAM!* I end up at a beautiful place I had not yet seen before. Followed by hours exploring Dwarven ruins and abandoned houses.

The best moments in Elder Scrolls games are always when you start with a mundane quest that end up more epic than Guild questlines.

I just love the way you'll be traipsing on to a specific location, but you notice some old ruin in the distance, but not that far away. And of course I'll pop along there to see what's going on.

You never quite know what'll happen!

Is there a way to order your inventory by weight and stuff? I found that really handy in Oblivion when having to get rid of stuff when I'm over encumbered.

No. The inventory really is one of the low points of this game, unfortunately.

I thought so, but thought I'd check in case I'm being stupid.

The whole item/weapon/spell management in this is shite. As is the map. Both are a step back from Oblivion. I don't understand why.

Had a good session on this yesterday though, one of those 'I think I'll check out that tower' times that turned into a wee quest in itself.

I don't understand complaints about the map - why do people dislike it? I find the 3Dness gives a good idea of when a location is above/behind/around something.

The indoor/dungeon maps are gash though.

I can't make out where the main paths are - there are mountains in the way and it makes it difficult to work out where to go.

I know I need to head SE or whatever, but it's a pain in the arse working out the way to go.

If it must be the way it is, it should zoom in much further.

The oblivion map was much simpler and easier to use.

I agree and disagree. I don't like that you can't zoom in and out further, but I think the way it shows you the way roughly is brilliant. Making you head South East in general encourages exploration, and I, with the most shit sense of where the fuck I am-ness in the world, still manage to take a detour, kill a giant and remember I need to now head West a bit and then North. Pretty easy to see 'I probably have to go around that mountain, but I might try and find a way...' as I've done many times. I once got the sneak on a hagraven who was the last enemy guarding something with my leet mountaineering skillz, then looked down and saw an entire forsworn camp with about 20 of the fuckers completely oblivious. Felt awesome. Likewise, at a very early level when dragons were scary, getting the sneaky drop down onto a word wall, learning the word and fucking legging it away down an almost sheer mountain.

The inventory is horrendous.

However, saying 'there are mountains in the way." about Skyrim is actually amazing and I'm going to plus one you for it. Damn them, those mountains all in the way. Brilliant.

Are there any reports on wether the latest patch breaks anything (360) ? I've left this for a few weeks while waiting for the patches and hope to get stuck into this adventure over the Xmas period. This is going to feel so Christmassy with the snow

I think my problem is that it is just a view of the world, at the current time of day and with the current weather conditions, so if it's night and cloudy then the map is bloody hopeless. Also I have to change the view to reliably see which side of a mountain somewhere is.

I've got better at using the map, but it's still far from ideal.
