Think i've just suffered my first major bug with this. Maybe someone can help me out?

I've just started the Night Caller temple quest. You have to follow an NPC. He went into the temple through a door, and i followed. Once inside though he'd vanished, his marker appears to have jumped miles to the end of the dungeon, and i'm now in the temple with no obvious way of getting into the dungeon itself. I can just hear a loud repetitive clanging noise from behind a wall. Its almost as if the NPC was supposed to unlock an area for me. It looks like this quest is fucked, and in turn the Dawnstar location is too. Am i missing something?

You aren't missing something. If you have a save from just before entering the dungeon then load that, talk to him, let him enter, and then wait about five seconds. That unstuck it for me.

I had my first 3 bugs last night in 35 hours play (only previous was stuck in some scenery), all dragon based! First was a side quest to "unlock/discover the power of some tower or other", I approached to two towers in heavy snow, and ascended the right hand side one. As I did so I could hear dragon noises, perhaps I thought almost as if it may be sleeping at the tip of the tower. I sneaked up, dreaming of trying my sneak attack on it from behind and her perhaps getting a one hit kill.

When I got to the top there was no dragon to be seen, although I could still hear it. I could see a little ramp leading off the tower so followed that. I then got a message saying I had killed the dragon and I then started to absorb the shout that was written on the wall nearby. No matter how hard I looked I couldn't find the dead body though :(

Also I killed a dragon outside whiterun but when when I returned 5 min later the skeleton was gone, I thought they were persistent?

Oh, and also the first dragon you kill outside white run as well as part of the main quest was now a fully skinned version lying dead.

Strange goings on.

I hope stiff can answer this if no one else can.

He's mentioned an armour cap of 580 a couple of times in this thread - as I understand it it is not possible to block more than 80% of damage with armour which is why this is the cap.

Is this correct? And does this mean that it is possible - with high enough skill (enhanced with enchantments and potions) to smith relatively simple heavy armour i.e steel and have it provide the exact same level of protection as daedric?

I've noticed that when I equip a helmet the various multipliers from the Heavy Armour skill tree rocket it up to the 700s. Obviously I will be experimenting with this myself but wondered if anyone knows definitively. I've been a little disappointed with the designs of the higher level armours and wondering if it was really worth speccing in them at all.

I'm not even sure that Daedric crafting affects my ability to improve Daedric artifacts such as the Mace of Bolag Bal or Dawnbreaker (my weapons of choice). Skyforged Steel or Vald's Lucky Dagger (which can be smithed to a crazy level) offer good alternatives anyway and don't need the perk.

Yes. Wear what you like the look of past 80%/580

I'd run out of Daedra Hearts so I decided to make a Dragon Set. It looks ok, but it's nice to know you have the choice without affecting your stats.

I'm quite a way off having max skill in 2h and missing a few % points and stuff (fire and frost enchantments could do more with a perk), but i finally managed to get this boom boom stick sorted yesterday:

That's great news. I'll get downlo......actually, you know what, I think I'll wait 24hours and see if there's any probs with it.

I'm looking forward to the moment when I can play it from the hard-drive rather than straight from disk because the load times now are getting quite long.

I've started getting crashes to desktop quite a lot on the PC version now. What tends to happen is objects appear that are untextured. This gets more frequent for a few minutes, then it crashes.

It's done this since I started playing, but it's now lasting for a much smaller period before it crashes. Anyone know of any fixes for that? Is it related to the size of the save file, like the console issues?

Just discovered that the Thieves Guild final quest stuff

restoring the guild to its former glory

is completely broken for me, and I'm guessing it could be for a lot of people too.

Basically if you've started doing odd jobs for Vex & Devlin before you've finished the main Thieves Guild quest arc, it seems there is a really good chance the quest above is broken for you too.

There are a couple of possible bug fixes on the wiki but they didn't work for me, even going back to my save just before I completed the main quest arc & doing that bit again still didn't give me access to the last quest.

You need to launch the game using the user-created 4gig patch. It fixed that issue for me.

Yeah ph0rce, you need to keep doing to odd jobs until a couple of proper quests come up.

Are sure, because the wiki implied that because I didn't get the quest

"Under New Management"

pop up straight after I finished the main quest arc, that was that.

Brnyolf just tells me he is too busy now & we'll talk later.

If I can just fix it by persevering, then hooray! :)

OK, that gives me a bit of hope then.

Do you remember if you were given the quest I mentioned above after you finished that quest or not?

I'll keep doing jobs anyway & see where it gets me.

Thanks! :)

I seem to be collecting bugged quests too, although just miscellaneous ones so far, generally when I've been doing too much exploring & already have quest items in my posession before I'm asked to find them. The Bards College in Solitude was bad for that, already had two items they were after & as such they didn't clear the quests when I handed them straight over.

Could you go into more detail? In spoiler tags obviously.

The wiki seemd to indicate that you'd be fine if you finished the proper Thieves Guild quest before you took any odd jobs from Vex or Devlin, otherwise it could be pot luck as to whether it bugs out or not.

Although LeChuck thinks it might resolve itself if I just keep going, I'll report back either way.

I assume 1.3 on the consoles is similar to the PC patch, in regards to what gameplay-related issues it fixes. It seems to be a very minor patch, mainly just to fix what was wrong with 1.2.

Patch 1.3 Notes:

General stability improvements

Optimize performance for Core 2 Duo CPUs

Fixed Radiant Story incorrectly filling certain roles

Fixed magic resistances not calculating properly

Fixed issue with placing books on bookshelves inside player purchased homes

Fixed dragon animation issues with saving and loading

Fixed Y-look input to scale correctly with framerate

Finally hit 100 in smithing last night, although with all the gold I have I could have reached it a lot sooner if I'd invested in a pile of leather and iron ore. I now sport a full set of dragonbone plate. I do wonder though, can I effectively boost a skill above 100 using enchantments/potions/spells? Would that mean I could further improve armour beyond "Legendary"?

Is hitting 100 any good if you don’t take the perks that go along with it? Or is it simply a means to being able to unlock the higher up perks?

I haven’t done a single perk in smithing because the early ones are as shit its seems a waste to put them in there. But then I do fancy upgrading all my weapons.

Smithing is definitely worth it, especially as you need it to improve certain weapons and armours. The perk to allow you to upgrade magical items is definitely one to get as soon as you can.

Cheers. will get on that straight away then.

Its just too tempting to keep putting them into my more naturally used skills such as archery, two handed, and sneaking.

Thieves guild

You need to do 5 jobs for Vex and whats his name in each City (except Riften) and after handing in the 5th one he gives you a special job to do in that city. Once you've done the special job in each city you get an extra special job.

If you get a job for riften, unless you need the cash just cancel it.

The status (i.e. "Legendary") doesn't change, but it does boost the stats bonus if you combine potions and enchanted items (i.e. blacksmithing potion + ring with smithing bonus enchant + amulet with smithing bonus)

EDIT - To clarify, it doesn't make a difference to the base item you create, only when you improve them using grindstone/table
