Also, a question for those that have finished the main story quest:

If you finish it off, do you stop having random dragons about the place? I kind of want to finish off the story so I can have a bit of closure and dip in and out over the next few months but I think I'd miss not having random dragons.

Nope. The main quest behaves like any other questline in the game, the world keeps turning once you have finished it and yes, dragons keep attacking. I think I have killed more since I finished the main quest than I did before I finished it in fact. I think it is only the "main" quest line because dragons are the coolest and most easily marketable feature of this game.

Then again, once I get two enchantments on everything perk, I should be able to make stuff way better than all of that (I hope).

Question on this one. You can get items that have 2 or more enchantments on them and when you disenchant them you seem to get a single enchantment, I.e. In the list it is down as destruction and magic regen. Does this mean potentially you can enchant an item with 2 enchantments and then disenchant it and learn those as a single enchantment. Then Re-enchant with those and another, disenchant to get a 3 hit single enchantment and then rinse and repeat adding extra enchantments until you can get every effect on a single item????

No is the short answer to that, you can't disenchant stuff you've enchanted.

Looking at those shots, I reckon Bethesda missed a trick by not being able to leap on top of dragons, flying through the air whilst trying to kill the bugger.

And then finding a suitable place to land safely.

That would be bloody awesome.

Failing that, someone mod the thing so that I can at least fly them a bit :)

I'd imagine the engine wouldn't be able to handle that properly across the hardware, and ten there's mechanics of it all working. Pop up of other creatures would also be a problem.

Mine just crashed, argh! During an auto-save just after fast travelling. And it seems the latest firmware includes a Windows-style "it seems you didn't shutdown correctly!" message so basically says its gonna restart and do a chkdsk.

So now I'm biting fingernails hoping the damn thing isn't about to shit it's arse out all over me.

I hate it when you get wimpy dragons that scarper instead of fighting to the death. It's not all that common, but this is the second time I've got one down to about 25% health before it's decided to just fly off over the mountains and not come back

But I was so intent on reliving the Neverending story.

Have you considered drinking 8 cans of tennents super and riding on the back of a hairy tramp?

Camilla Valerius you are a brazen woman. I helped you out with your love triangle and then you start giving me gifts, and expressing an interest in marrying me. And once we are married your old 'friend' comes to visit us in Whiterun. God only knows what Lydia thinks of all this as she watches from her chair all day and all night.

I think the autosave saves before the fast travel actually happens. You should be fine :)

Also, after watching some of the footage of Metal Gear Rising, I can't help but dream that one day a game of this scale will be made with combat as logical, fair and satisfying as a Platinum/Clover game.

And I bet you'd be able to ride the dragons in THAT game.

My mates bought me this for my birthday. Having never played anything like this before (no Oblivion, no Fallout, next to no JRPGs) - are there any tips for me starting out?

I picked the cat man because I like cats and I have got to the first wee settlement, Richmond or something. I got killed trying to pickpocket some guy who is concerned about his bird being with another man - he attacked me after I stole some gold, so, obviously, I killed him. The whole village started to hunt me down and I got killed.

Sounds like you're doing fine... :)

Well, I'd say you got off to a bad start there, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. It's best not to alienate yourselves from entire towns if it can be helped. That said, you could always roleplay a lone badass type or something.

Aside from that, just explore and have fun.

What about the seemingly infinite amount of crap I've picked up. Baskets, buckets, mugs, plates, 8 pairs of fur lined boots etc - should I be selling this stuff when I get the chance or holding onto it. Is it worth my while having one set of boots equiped but keeping a spare in my inventory - do they degrade?

There is a lot to take in straight off.

No equiptment or weapons degrade, you never need more than one of anything unless you want to have it, in some cases two items with the same description (e.g. "Boots") will look different and you might want to keep both and wear them on different occasions.

I envy you in many ways - so much to look forward to!

Sell everything basically which is not a better weapon or piece of armour or a health potion. Nothing degrades from use, other than magically enchanted items which need to be recharged like batteries.

In other news, I have a new insult to add to the collection "Milk Drinker" :)

I fucking love this game; (Markarth / Theives' Guild sidequest spoilers)

After I was given a fishing quest by Vex I found myself in Markarth trying to find this one woman to pickpocket.

Turns out she was currently locked away doing some sort of secret ritual so Sheddard Stark being what he is decided to break in and steal from her during the ceremony.

It was all going well untill I got spotted trying to sneak back out.

Instead of being arrested or killed I was given the task of essentially kidnapping some lass to be their new Goddess.

I love stuff like that

I've just got to level 20 (after what must be 40 hours of play ) and I'm still a vampire! In fact it feels like I've been a vampire forever :). I know how to unvampire myself but to do that I need a thingy (check), which I can fill up with a thingy (check) using a certain thingy (check) but to do that I need a certain amount of thingy first which, certainly in day time as a vampire at levl 19 when I last tried I didn't have. Meanwhile I'm bashing on with all sorts of quests, having a swig of Lydia's (or other bod's as need be) blood to keep my vampire habit under control. Just got to Riften last night after an epic journey and can't wait to join the thief's guild and up my already uber sneakiness some more.

I've got a new plan, I'm playing a new game (yeah, I know) where I've prohibited myself from using fast travel or reloading autosaves if something goes slightly wrong, for a more "authentic" experience. I'm being a ranger/hunter type, only putting perks into Stealth, Archery and One Handed, though my self imposed rules have basically led to me travelling from Riverwood to Rorikstead to Morthal to Solitude, getting a small bounty in each by doing something silly and refusing to reload, then running away from the guards.

I had planned to play all out benevolent (and still am a bit) but in Riverwood I tried to use the grindstone and accidentally picked up an iron helmet. Instead of doing that thing which often happens when you pick something up by accident where the shopkeeper comes over and takes it back and you don't get arrested, the blacksmith ran off, then came sprinting back with a two-handed warhammer and hit me in the face

I haven’t used fast travel at all in 32 hours of play (well once to test how it worked). But I am beginning to get tempted. I kind of want to get some of my quests off my list, but that often involves a massive trek back across the map. However every time I resist fast travel and set off on my journey I stumble across something awesome (a beautiful big bridge to the left of whiterun last night), so I think my decision is justified. But then my quest list just keeps growing and growing, and I actually have no memory of how a lot of them begun so they seem kind of pointless.

Also I am dying to do the next thieves guild quest but that is miles North in an unexplored area and I don’t want to see all the parts of the map too soon.

I totally love this game though, I can already say quite easily its my favourite game of all time, and I have never really been heavily into this genre before. I have played all the Mass Effect and also Fallout 3and Oblivion, but only Mass Effect really sucked me in like this (but Mass Effect lacks the sense of exploration this games gives you).

Hour 90 report:

I decided to play as a Mage. I usually play as a Mage in role playing games, I think the graphical effects of magic whizzing from your hands is more interesting to look at than just swinging a sword. My character, Radion Automatic started off dual casting destruction magic. I found it to be extremely effective once I had got the perk which makes two handed spells stagger targets as it meant keeping things at distance was fairly easy. I combined that with archery to enable me to get sneaky long range shots in on targets when in dungeons.

Whenever I was waiting to hit the next milestone in my destruction tree I was putting perks into sneaking and archery. It didnt take much effort at all to get the triple damage sneak attack with bows perk and the 15 x multiplier for backstabs with daggers just by playing as a mage/archer. I have some gloves which double my sneak attack bonus with a one handed weapon, so I can now 30 x backstab with a dagger, so even as I literally have no perks whatsoever in the one handed tree I can still do 300-330 damage from backstabs which is enough to instantly kill normal enemies, so my 1h + spell combo is a rather spiffy dagger I got from completing the Dark Brotherhood chain and invisibility which enables me to walk around undetected. Now I have 100 in destruction and every perk plus some decent mage gear I can just obliterate targets in next to no time. My hammer of dawn spell can reduce a dragon to ashes in less than five seconds so I have a get out of the shit button.

HHaWT.jpg

For this reason I have decided to go barbarian with Radion Automatic. He has about 20 in heavy armour and about 20 in 2h weapons. No perks in any of the warrior skills whatsoever, but he raided his wardrobe for some ebony armour which got looted a few dungeons ago and he is sporting a big fuckoff hammer which leeches stamina from the target. Basically this means chaining power attacks is a piece of piss, so for a bit of variety I will see how easy it is to stay alive like this given that I am level 42 and enemies are probably going to be tough in melee combat. I hope there are plenty of bandit camps which still need cleaning up, or maybe it is now time to actually do a couple of quests with The Companions.

Took me a while to realise that was two characters in that picture, seems to merge into one pic of a guy holding his axe and shield in the air, until you realise he has three arms!
