Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

It really is a stupidly designed engine if it loads in all your objects, no matter how far away you are

Is that a potential reason for the stuttering? If I cant be arsed with selling, do I just fly tip a load of stuff to get rid?

I think it's the "fly tipping" that is the problem; people say it's recording the location of the Extra Stamina potion you dumped in the middle of a forest so you had room for a bear pelt, and that potion will stay there forever more, as will the bottle of Nord Mead you knocked over in the pub in Riften and every single other object that you've moved/dumped anywhere in the gameworld.

I usually get their attention by heading for an open spot around the centre of where they're circling. Ideally you want it to be fairly flat with no trees or other obstacles that would keep it from landing. Sometimes they're seemingly indifferent to your presence no matter where you're standing, though.

yeah, it seems a bit hit and miss. i was talking to some dude at a campfire and he was giving me this sob story about his family when one just appeared out of nowhere and went fucking mental.

how do you aggro dragons? there's a bit with two of the bastards swooping about - i managed to kill one but the other refuses to take any notice despite flying directly above and around me, even when i try to ping it with arrows. do they all have some kind of environmental trigger? like, if you cross a certain point in the map they suddenly get uppity?

Sounds like you have the dragon bug

It's working again for me now. Phew! I hope it doesn't happen again. I've noticed my game saves are now clocking in at over 10MB. Not sure if that type of thing really does hammer the engine, as claimed by others. I suppose whilst I'm fighting a bear in the mountains to the south, it's comforting to know that a wedge of goats cheese is exactly where I left it in Solitude.

Basically that dragon was a 'Blood Dragon' and supposedly an Elder one. It was properly flidding out again, jumping about the place, flying so hard into the mountain only its wing was sticking out etc so I just fucked it off and ran off, fast travelled home and on my next outing a different dragon came for a fight. All good since then.

A couple of times I've been shooting Alduin (big bad King dragon) as he's resurrecting some other dragon. It's just a cinematic bit really, you can't hit him and he buggers off afterwards leaving you to battle the other.

Fought my first Dragon Priest too. Cool.

I fought another named dragon out in the wild earlier on. There was two dragons, one of which was this named one, something with a 'V' I think, a master necromancer and a bear or sabre cat against me and Shadowmere. Novelty.

I seem to get two dragons at once quite a lot at the mo, which is weird.

So er... whats the deal with Dragonplate?

It's worse than Daedric and well, looks kind of stupid. I mean I prefer the Helmet to the Daedric one as you can still see your face but the rest looks pretty awful. Light Armour users definitely got the longstraw on that one, thinking I might even reload an earlier save as I feel it is a waste of a perk.

In fact Daedric looks more like what Dragonplate should have been (minus the glowy red bits) what with its general badasserry and horns and the like. Dragonplate has a bit of an Ed Gein thing going on.

It is a bit lame, I suppose the upside is that its a lot easier to get the materials, although to be fair I've got loads of Daedra hearts stashed in my alchemy bag.

I've only just started using my Dragonscale set as I'm levelling up 1-handed and block, nice to have a bit more protection even if I've not put any perks into armour whatsoever. I'm only doing these now to get to the Ebony and Daedric upgrades in Smithing so I can make the bad-assest bow possible! It is rather fun whacking things in the face with a sword though, makes a nice change from the sneaking :)

It's a shame there aren't various 'designs' within each armour types, because everyone's characters just end up looking the same. You should be able to colour them and stuff too. Various pointless accessories (scarfs/eyepatches/whatever) would be awesome too.

What level are you? Maybe your that damn tough :)

I'm only just 40 but I'm ebony'd up with not great enchantments on, sneak is 100 and I'm one shot arrow-ing all comers pretty much, apart from the occasional two shot. Bit of Sanguine Rose thrown in for good measure. I love firing him up to a walkway I can't currently get to and hearing him blunder his way through the bad guys to get back to me. He absolutely ruined about 5 forsworn at Mizanchleft for me earlier. Good lad. Although every time he dies it makes me panic as I think there's someone else there...

I suppose this is a spoiler as it's something that doesn't happen at the end of quests but I'm not actually mentioning the end missions or events at all;

I think it's a huge shame that there is no 'growth' of anything around you, the thieves always rabbit on about 'returning the flagon etc back to it's former glory and I've finished off the quest line and done loads of the little jobs so by all accounts they should have more money but bugger all difference to anything. Would have been nice to have other noob thieves starting to mill about that you could send on missions, or just more stuff in the flagon, or other little shops and things in the other alcoves around the big pond thing. Same with DB and every town in the whole place, I'm sure it would be a logistical nightmare but it would be brilliant and give you a much better sense of completing stuff. I still heard Dirge or whatever his name is saying 'Oh you're Brynjolf's protege' (or whatever it is he says) and I was one mission from running the whole bloody lot of them!

I'm sure it would be tricky to do but I think that sort of progressive stuff is something I'd really like to see from next gen, with more people being robbed or killed if you'd fixed whoever up.

One quite minor thing which is completely stupid is the business in the Markarth jail

If you side with the Forsworn, they even tell you outright that they didn't put much thought into it because the leader of them says if you're seen after this, Forsworn will kill you! I wish I didn't bother helping them out now but it would have been much more immersive if every Forsworn you saw after that saw some sort of 'special mark of the Forsworn helper' and didn't attack

It's still brilliant but I suppose the limitations of the gen seem a bit more obvious, it's clearly the most pushed Oblivion they could do this gen and it still needs patches!

Couldn't you dye stuff using the plants in one of these? Or was that another game entirely? That would have been easy to do you'd have thought.

True dat. Though I think eventually it doesn't matter stats wise right? If you have the right perks then you've hit the armour cap and it all weighs nothing and it's just about how it looks. And the Black stuff looks way better!

Would be cool if you could get more individual 'endgame' pieces, but then, there isn't really an endgame is there and if it was too deep you'd spend forever getting a set of armour and weapons you have no use for. It's difficult to say as well what could be different, if not 'beter' then different, as magic has most other things covered.

No Dragonbone weapons though what's that about!

Okay this has to be a record....

Got this game today, just put it on and I've got 5 mins into it and it's crashed!

I know this type of game is prone to bugs but seriously, I've literally done nothing, the dragon attcked and I was following some guy - crash.

I know this is probably way too late, but I remember someone wondering where they could find some potions that bolstered their magicka and I've come across a bunch of them in High Gate Ruins, west of Dawnstar. There's enough that I assume they must be a permanent fixture, not just randomised loot.

Also, Bethesda seriously need to work on the responsiveness of the controls. I've lost count of the amount of times I've died due to a Shout not activating when I press the button — yes, the metre is ready — or my character not blocking because I started holding down the button before my previous attack animation had fully played out.

Are you sure you weren't just stunned?

It's like the lack of stats/hud aside from the health/magic/stamina bars was a big decision style wise. There could easily be a ton of timers and buff symbols up at any given time, notifications to show you're stunned, poisoned, etc, like in MMOs. The data is there but choosing not to how the player adds to the immersion I think. My stat nerd side gets touchy about it but that guy is a bit of a dick sometimes.

I've had this a lot as well, the shout button not working for a while after some trigger, often after a power attack. Gets really annoying when you're trying to Unrelenting Force someone off a cliff and whiel you're waiting for the button to work, they move out of danger.

Well, I was moving during the most recent case of suspicious silence. Previously I've also held the button to charge a Shout, have nothing happen once it's released, and then get an error message about not being able to Shout whilst a Shout is active if I press the button again; diving into the Magic menu cleared the clog.

There's also responsiveness concerns that aren't down to bugs, such as not being able to jump during sheathing animations. That might seem a small thing, but there's been a couple of times I've wanted to jump a gap just after switching to my bow and ended up falling down a level despite pressing jump in time. Naturally you can play around that limitation, but I feel the combat would feel better if you didn't have to; I don't see what the jumping restriction adds other than frustration.

You do! You need to do 5 small jobs in each big city and then Delvin will off you a 'special' job in it.

I can beat that. First time I put it on, the game went haywire even before the word "SKYRIM" appeared in the opening credits. Basically, the horse had become detached from the cart and wasn't moving. Me, and everyone else was stood outside the cart, kind of just staring at each other. I could look around but couldn't move. I think I waited about 5 minutes expecting the game to hand control back to me or something, so I could make a dash for it over the mountains. But nope. Had to reload. Best game ever since that point onwards. :)
