I'm encountering one strange problem with the miscellaneous quests..

usually they are "give x to n" kind of quests. And so i faff around finding X and then go to my journal and say "right who was it that wanted 17 X's again? Okay, it's N, right, where the fuck was N again? "show on map" = nothing.. nada. just points the arrow to somewhere in the wilds.

I'm wondering that there's three possible scenario's for this:

1. The person who asked for 17 X's is now dead... (which is a REAL arsehole)

2. I've somehow got the quest, by collecting a special X and not yet encountered the person I'm supposed to be taking it to.. (which would be kinda odd)

3. It's bugged to fuck, and I should just go on the wiki and look up where N usually hangs about.

I'm hoping it's not 3....

I think it is 3 but more of a glitch than a bug - I had that problem with the jeweller in Riften but when I remembered who he was and went to him he accepted the items I had collected.

Excellent. They sound far better than their meagre skill tree descriptions had me believe. And of course, one-handed! Don't know why I didn't twig on that now I have back stab down and sorted. The Suck, my self-crafted legendary glass dagger enchanted with soul trap, does a lovely 32 x 15 backstab damage and is my current favourite way of killing everything. I'm guessing your one-handed skill goes up when you back stab? Can't say I've noticed it levelling up though.

Yeah stabbing levels one handed - I just did a few dungeons in non-sneak mode to level it a bit. Alternately, it shouldnt cost much to pay a trainer is you're fairly low level.

I noticed the other day that the bow's shove thing actually levels block, and also randomly triggers the slow mo while blocking perk

Yeah for me he's in Riften. Yet to embark on that quest, may give it a go tonight since everyone smiles when they mention it! :D

I think I ruined that quest. I did the drinking, got the first clue from the person whose place I trashed, then got distracted on my way to the clue. Ended up doing other stuff and a few hours later someone went "You still owe me, you know!" and I talked to them, thus leading me into the very last stage of the quest.

I'm about ready to fus-ro-dah that bitch off the top of a mountain.

Hey, i do that all the time with Lydia. I jumped off of a building and ran down a mountain - she not only refused to follow me, but then also refused to leave the roof of the building. So I went back and Shouted in her face and blew her clean down the mountain, I completely lost sight of her tumbling ragdoll. Her health was gone, but she survived...but the sabre cat she landed on soon had her on her knees again.

Now, every time I want to take a shortcut over terrain Lydia won't traverse, she knows what's coming. "Just stand by this cliff, Lydia, while I position myself behind yo-FUS RO DAH!!!!!!!" And off we go.

In related news, three-word Unrelenting Force is my favourite thing in the game so far.

Bloody hell. I have a piddling superior glass dagger with a two second paralysis enchantment, I can see what others say now about smithing 'breaking the game'.

Then again, I did manage to one-hit kill a master necromancer the other day.

I'm keeping an eye open for magic items that increase back stab damage so I can learn the enchantment for myself. Three more enchantment skill points I'll hit one hundred, unlock the double enchantment perk and will be able to add that to The Suck. :)

Unfortunately there is no backstab damage enchantment, only the unique one on the DB armour.

what's the difference between a glitch and a bug?

Glitch: In video games, a glitch is a programming error which results in behavior not intended by the programmers. Glitches may include incorrectly displayed graphics, collision detection errors, game-freezing or crashes, sound issues, and others. Some glitches are potentially dangerous to the game save data.

Bug: A software bug is an error, flaw, mistake, failure, or fault in a computer program that prevents it from behaving as intended (e.g., producing an incorrect or unexpected result). Most bugs arise from mistakes and errors made by people in either a program's source code or its design, and a few are caused by compilers producing incorrect code

fair enough

as a software engineer for the last 15 years - I see them both as bugs.

I think a glitch makes it sound almost positive... you can sometimes take advantage of 'glitches' to do something unusual in a game. That's you going down a code path that you're not supposed to and you should be prevented from doing so... therefore, it's a bug.

I had this and thought it was a bug, but I fixed it accidentally and it's not! Odd design decision though.

For your misc quests to show markers on the map/ compass, you first need to activate the main Miscellaneous category before going into the sub menu and activating individual misc quests, otherwise the marker won't appear.

Glad I'm not the only one who was confused by it though!

OMG. Thank you for this, what an extremely retarded design decision that is!

Yeah I can appreciate it is confusing but it can be helpful to just quickly turn off all misc. quest markers on your map with a "master switch" rather than having to scroll down and untick every one.

Especially as the Misc quests pile up!

Yup, I agree with that, but the master switch could have been enabled when the user has specifically gone to the misc tab and selected one of the tasks? - you could still have the master switch to flip them all off again...

Anyway, confused no longer. Awesome.

No. they are the same. Except:

A glitch is a term used by people who do not or have never worked in software.

A bug covers everything else.

My game is running pretty badly so I think I need to clear the 360's cache...how do I do it on the latest os?

Memory device settings, perform system maintanence IIRC. Made no difference to me though.

I think I'm starting to tire of it a bit  I must have about 15 missions going, along with 15 side missions, but can't get excited about any of them.

Any recommendations on things to do/places to go that I might not have already? To be honest I've not been to many places except Whiterun/Solitude/Riften/Winterhold and done a bit with Greybeards/Imperials. I think if I start exploring more I'll get even more bogged down with quests that don't really interest me.

You not been to Markarth yet? Thats a really nice place with some ace quests. I think that was the first of the holds I went to that was really different style wise, before that the others were very similar in style to Whiterun/Helgen with that Lord of the Rings settlement look. In fact, the difference between the holds is something they've really nailed, they all have their own feel and style, which is ace. While in Oblivion each of the towns had a different look, and it was easy to tell which you were in, there was nothing as varied or interesting as here.

It does seem like there are a couple of "lesser" ones though, which wasnt really the case with Oblivion. Dawnstar, Falkreath and Morthar dont really have much going on it seems, and I've barely been in them. I think they are also the three "open" ones where you dont enter through a gate and arent enclosed by walls. In Oblivion, each town seemed fairly balanced in terms of how much there was to do. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of how much time I spend in each hold, but I would guess it would be mostly Whiterun (as my "base" is there with most my stuff sorted between containers) followed by Riften due to the Thieves Guild, then Solitude, then Markarth. Markarth is ace, you should go there.

Echoing what people have said earlier, one thing that is a big step back in my opinion is the quest log. The idea of splitting quests into major and minor quests is fine, but the quest text is too cut down for main quests and totally removed for minor, which is pretty poor when you are just given a line of text to go off - I'd like to know why I'm supposed to do that or who asked me to! And the main quest text doesnt tell you enough. In previous games you could often get away with not using the map marker and just go off the quest text. Hell, in Morrowind you HAD to. Often you need the map marker in Skyrim because you dont get enough information in the quest text. I know that it would require them to add a LOT more text, but this is one of those things which I think should have been done. Something like Oblivions would be amazing - better descriptions, plus the ability to read all the previous entries on the quest log.
