Yeah that bastard caught me out good and proper, if I'd have known beforehand I'd have taken a completely different approach.

Could you, in a spoiler, tell me what happens if you DO do that thing in Markarth? Because, having read the spoiler concerned, I'd definitely have done what it said not to do! :)

How do you get the Riften house? I see no options to ask for work when I speak to the Jarl or her cronies. Does it involve doing the thieves guild questline? I don't want to be a dirty thief. ( Well, in reality my character isn't qualified to be one, and I try to ignore Bethesda's "become a master of every guild in one playthrough" approach. What am I? A bloody renaissance man? )

Investigate the skooma problem and just generally help the citizens out in any way you can.

It's rather annoying that besides the skooma investigation, the only "good guy" quests are boring fetch quests involving getting X amount of X. All the interesting stuff requires thievery, murder and generally being an asshole.

Also, you should be warned, there's a bug with the Riften house/thane status. Once you buy the house from the Steward, speak immediately to the Jarl again and make sure you're Thane before visiting your house. If you visit your house before speaking to the Jarl, she'll forget ever knowing you. the passive aggressive bitch.

Actually, does anyone know of a vendor I can get extra magicka potions from? I stole one from a shop but the actual shopkeeper doesn't sell them! I don't want to put points into magicka as I only want in to the mages college to steal stuff.

Maybe someone could spoiler the answer for me but is there a house that has all the useful amenities (I don't mean a bog, although I've yet to find one of those in either of my houses for that matter) I'm having to fast travel between properties to get access to enchant table, alchemy lab and a forge etc. The Solitude house is also a little bit annoyingly far from the fast travel point, unlike my nice (but small) Whiterun house.

there's a chance that

Guards will not let you do anything. And follow you about saying you're going to jail. It's impossible though so they just loop

So if I'm at level 40 and I've never put any points into magic (playing a pure sneak/archery/melee character), is it now too late for me to change my mind, as I've only got 10 levels worth of points left to stick in it? I was thinking about doing the Mage's college questline.

It is theoretically possible to raise all skills to 100 and reach level 81 in the process but the difficulty will come when you encounter levelled enemies in quests or random dungeons, when the temptation will be to revert back to the combat skills you have already levelled rather than try out different ones. Maybe someone has already done it but I imagine it will take a bit of patience to do.

I don't have enough Magicka to cast the spell I need to even enter the mages college. :( I'm about 40 / 50 points short. I've been scouring the world for extra magicak potions and only found one that ups it by 20. I did read you can do a shout but I don't get that conversation option. I can say that I'm dragonborn but she just laughs in my face. :(

Try reloading this part - the spell asked for seems to vary. Or try persuade. Or use fortify magicka potions which can be made with red mountain flower and tundra cotton (plus a bunch of other more esoteric ingredients).

Any of the apothecaries should stock them from time to time.

The Riften one is much more compact than the Solitude sprawl and can be upgraded to include both echant and alchemy tables but isn't particularly close to the fast travel point.

Whiteun wins hand down to store smithing materials.

Whaaaat. The fireball skill is really basic! You can cast it with your starting magicka!

She asked me to cast fear - she then made me buy it from her the scalping cowbag. Have I been an idiot and I can just cast any random spell for her?!

Cheers for the reply, I might just go with the combo I have at the minute then.

Incidentally, does anyone know if there is an easy way to get someone to follow you that isn't a housecarl? I need a guinea pig...

Also, I must say I found it a bit disappointing to 'fail' the taste of death mission after I

slaughtered every last one of the stinking cannibal scum.

Almost a pity someone else didn't say anything about it or what have you.

The missions are a lot more linear / black and white than in F3 it seems, which is a bit of a shame. Some of the radiant stuff they went on about should have applied to how you finished (or didn't maybe) a mission, rather than just the randomly generating mini missions.

Oh well, maybe in VI ;)

Actually a question for alchemists; do enemies become more susceptible to poisons etc?

Its just I save my paralyse and beastier potions for bosses etc, but they always seem to resist the effects. Which kinda makes me feel alchemy is a bit pointless.

If you are rich you can hire a merc for 500g. Otherwise, loads of "minor" NPCs will follow you after doing them a favour - e.g the students at the magic college, or the Companions will.

I had an epic time last night try to cure myself of full on vampirism - as things stand I get attacked by everyone I meet so its becoming a bit of a pain in the arse fending off complete village worths of npc's and then scarpering/getting killed. Also if I meet a dragon a) it tends to not be able to see me in sneak mode and buggers off (vampires are especially sneaky) and b) if it does see me.... I have 100% of no resistance to fire and have to hide again. Fantastic for hunting deer and elk mind :)

Anyway I found the guy I need to see and have, by an awful lot of trial and error, figured out how to reduce my vampirism to an acceptable level so that I can actually meet with (and not get attacked by) the guy who should be able to cure me. In the meantime I managed to sneak into the correct chap's house and fight him off repeatedly (levelling up a fair bit in the process) as he attacked (rather than talked nicely to) me and hightailing when the guards arrived. Anyway I've now got my vampirism under control and will hopefully be holding a sensible conversation with the man later.

Ha, excellent story. There is a man round here called SPAGGLEHORN who cowardly travelled back in time to avoid becoming a vampire. INSTEAD OF MANNING IT UP LIKE YOU.

I think there's only one bog in the entire game; one bandit-infested fort had a tiny room that just contained a bucket, a drain grating and disturbing brown stains on the floor (and halfway up the walls).

I don't think any of them have a forge inside. Fast travel to the Blue Palace in Solitude, it's much closer to the house.
