Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

My first character was a sneaky warrior type (good at stealth but didn't steal things) and I've started a second character to explore other things (specifically amoral things) who is a kind of mage-thief. Who only uses daggers and magic in combat, and will go all Dark Brotherhood.

So I guess those are combinations of the archetypes, but not particularly common ones.

Yeah I phrased the question pretty badly. I was just trying to say that in any western RPG the suite of tools at our disposal is always from the trinity so it's impossible to completely get away from.

My wife has played much more than me (she's closing in on level 30 whereas I'm level 10). Her build is a bit less stereotypical, currently playing in light armour with a weapon in one hand and destruction spell in the other.

Even if I'm playing primarily in heavy armour, is it also good to have some light armour to hand for quests where I do need to sneak about a bit?

I would say no unless you're only having a single run. Roleplay that shit. Try to sneak in your heavy stuff with your rudimentary sneak skills and then slaughter everything when you inevitably get caught.

Cool. I will probably replay as a 'thief' at some point anyway, mostly because my wife's new Nightingale armour looks so badass.

Yeah the weightless perk really helps with sneaking, Never took any light armour perks but used it while sneaking. trained heavy every new level and as soon as I got the weight mod, it was daedric all the way. 10 ton brick shit house that can't be seem or heard.

Are there Ebony ore veins anywhere? I've not found any yet. Are they associated with particular area types?

I think there are ebony veins in the mine in Shor's Stone (the town that's part of the Riften Hold). There may also be one on top of the Throat of the World, but I can't remember 100%.

On character types, I find sneaking quite tedious in most of the games that require you to sneak (except Batman, though even that drags after a while), but I like the way sneaking works in Skyrim, especially compared to how it did (or, rather, didn't) in Oblivion.

I've been playing the biggest mash-up of the three archetypes imaginable, dual-wielding in smithed and enchanted light armour, backed up by conjured dremora lords and storm atronachs. Occasionally do sneak archery on enemies in dungeons, but have perked neither of these skills so I don't rely on them (though they've both increased quite a lot). I also have about 48 in Destruction, but though I got a few perks for that, I've largely given up on it because I think it needs a lot of perks to be useful. And I have like 67 in Restoration just from healing myself, but again no perks. My speech is 60 and I can sell anything to any merchant, but the skill levels so slowly that it's not much use getting it any higher now that I'm filthy rich.

At some point I want to play through the Companions with a barbarian two-handed-wielding warrior, and I want to do DB again, plus Thieves with a dedicated stealther. But right now I'm having my cake and eating it too.

I wish there was a way to start a new character without going through the whole introduction again every time.

Isn't there a moment in this game where it asks you if you want to change your character, after the introduction? Oblivion did this and there I made a save file just before that point so I could skip the opening in later playthroughs.

Nope, but the game does make a save right before you make your character so you can at least skip the ride into Helgen if you keep that save.

I am 65 hours in and I am still wearing fairly shit armour. Basically stuff I have looted or been given as quest rewards. I am one of the many rllmuk mage/archers and my damage output is through the roof. I can one shot pretty much any "trash" mob in a dungeon with my bow, and those of you who have played as a Mage will know just how much firepower somebody with 94 in the destruction tree (and every perk except for the final one) can do. Dragons go down faster than a tupenny whore due to a certain shout I earned on the main questline, and if I am in the shit I have a particularly powerful companion I can summon at will.

So my question is should I go for an armour "set" at any point, or am I fine rocking the Archmage Robes and a Dragon Priest mask? After my Destruction is full I am going to start putting my perks into Enchanting as I have about 55-60 points in that tree just from normal questing activity. I have a shitload of raw materials as I have hardly sold anything I have looted in dungeons, so I probably have enough in the bank to craft something. Is there any reason to go with a fully enchanted armour set if you fight with spells first, or is it just worth doing because it looks awesome?

I'm not normally the type who kills innocent townsfolk, but by God, every time I returned to my home in Whiterun, I got fed up with that snooty guy who walks around the market place looking down his nose at me, asking if I've been to such and such a place, and saying, "Oh no, of course you haven't!" Even his wife hated him, saying that if I wanted to find him he'd probably have his head up the Jarl's arse.

So I killed him. I smashed his face in with an axe in front of the tree in Whiterun. It was worth going to prison for. Then, when I escaped, I went back to the scene of the crime, looted his body, stripped him naked and threw him on a bench.

Ha!

I fucking did that too. Except I didn't go to prison and killed ten Whiterun guards and some dude called Commander Caius three times (goddamn essential NPCs). Worth it.

I have finally caught up on this thread! (Don't tell my boss that I read 20 pages on an internet forum during work...)

I was quite surprised to see that I'm 60 hours in last night. I opted out of installing the patch, because I don't want the resistances to be gone, and I have an OLD xbox with an 8 GB hard drive, so installing to disk isn't really an option.

I've been playing axe and shield and I'm trying to decide if the next character will be a sneaky dirtbag theif/murderer (I have never played this type of character in an ES game before) or a pure (or as pure as possible) mage. Maybe a "Gandalf-esque" mage is a better descriptor.

I am really enjoying this game. I don't know why, but it is incredibly addicting to me. Think I might go do some hunting, my hand crafted orcish armour is getting a little dated, as well as my Elven waraxe. Need to make some Ebony stuff, but I'm not quite there for smithing just yet. I've really been trying not to power level it, and not so many levels ago I came back (after several trips) from a Dwarvern ruin and made an obscene amount of Dwarvern war hammers (seemed like the most coin per ingot, although I didn't do an exhaustive study). I think I've leveled my combat skills enough between now and then that I shouldn't be breaking anything by getting some more smithing levels by making some leather helms though.

I'm thinking I'll start ANOTHER character (I already have 3) as a pure Illusion mage. Not sure how plausible it will be - I'm thinking I will probably end up a sneak-mage, popping people with Fury and Fear and sneak-stabbing anyone who's left alive - but it will be a refreshing change from the usual DESTRUCTION DESTRUCTION DESTRUCTION course magery usually takes.

I've been using the same old steel Skyforge sword for ages and I'm level 27 with 68 in blacksmithing. I've not found anything that seems much better and I've added soul trap to the blade plus maxed it out at superior (possibly the level above). Should I be looking or another weapon? It seems pretty capable so far. Nothing I've picked up or seen in shops besides the odd magic weapon doesn't seem to have a better hit rate. Mines 32.

Edit. Schnibbles - Do you actually need to start another character? Couldn't you just go off and train in Illusion regardless?

Oh man, I just started to do a bit of enchanting for the first time and have done wonders for my damage dealing ability.

Sunk 3 points into the 'Enchanter' perk to make new enchantments 60% stronger; and then enchanted a ring, a necklace and some bracers all with the Archery enchantment and Grand Soul gems for 21% more bow damage on each item.

My 'Supple Ancient Nord Bow' has a base damage rating of 34, but wearing those 3 items gives it a rating of 55! Awesome! My overall damage rating using that bow + Elven arrows is now 71. Not too shabby at all.

I'm level 30 now and have been finding enemies pretty easy at the moment. My armour seems to mean I don't take much damage, my double firebolts hurt enemies enough and then I step in with either my double handed axe of 40 elec damage or giant sword bastard of soul stealing. Works a treat all the time, and end of levelly type baddies in dungeons are down before they barely get off an attack.

This and I'm nearly 80 smithing and almost 70 enchanting. My destruction skills are lagging behind a bit, I like the idea of improving them - but at the same time I'm using archery as much as possible too.

That's a really good thing for me though - I've been able to try several different things and that I can play an Orc Mage who then busts out a double handed sword; excellent!

I love the Sanguine Rose. It is my favourite item in the game, and my favourite thing to do with it are stealth kills. Well, distraction kills more like. If I can aggro an archer type and keep him shooting at me and missing then I am laughing. There is nothing better than firing the rose beyond him and seeing a gigantic demon with an five foot long flaming sword stride up behind the guy and absolutely twat him in the back with it. Usually that will kill the guy, and he hasnt got a clue what hit him.

I had a similar experience when I was out wandering. Some twat and his wife with a bodyguard. He was boasting about some presents he had on him for a wedding he was going to. "good job I'm a good guy" I thought. The he went and did it. Did you just call me peasant? *thwack* *squelch* cha Ching!

Course I could. But right now I have a two-handed GRR WAR GRR STORMCLOAKS Nord who of course could not be a sneaky mage-type. I also have a Destruction mage who was my first character and thus is a bit shit, and also doesn't have the stealthiness that would make this work. My third character I might co-opt into this, because it's a thief type that's only level 4, but basically I just enjoy creating new characters.

Haha, I did exactly the same thing with exactly the same mental processes, I've been playing for 40 hours now and have visited a grand total of 2 cities so am somewhat of a loner (yes, I'm an outcast in a game played by outcasts) but when that smug prick called me poor just as I was at the edge of hearing range I stopped dead, turned around slowly with an expression of purest rage on my face, and proceeded to murder the entire entourage with extreme prejudice. Deed done, I stripped his corpse of the finery he was so proud of, along with the wedding presents, and threw them in a lake.

This game. Just..... :D
