Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Ok this is fucking sweet:

http://www.bethblog.com/

Was just about to post that, it's brilliant news, not only will it be easy for people to start making mods but it's potentially as simple as a few clicks in Steam to install them. Hopefully it will also mean mods from places like Skyrim nexus will be simple to install. There are lots of great mods for Oblivion but it isn't a fun experience installing them, a bit like a house of cards and the next one could easily bring it all down. Can't wait to see what the game will be like come next Summer.

To be honest, you don't even need to buy a house, just join the mage's college and they give you a room

Don't you have to walk a fair bit to get to the room though? The house in Whiterun is right next to where you fast travel in as well as having a blacksmiths next door. Easy selling point there.

Thieves' guild spoiler (sort of)

What the hell, Speaking with Silence is an enormous difficulty spike. It's crawling with scourges and overlords, Mercer gets downed after two hits over and over again, I have no potions left and by the time I've used my healing spells they're on top of me again.

Not enjoying that quest at all. Surely I'm doing something wrong? There's no way it should be ten times harder than everything else in the game so far.

It's pretty hard, took me a few attempts but I loved that quest because I had to come up with some new tactics. Had some brilliant fights on that quest.

That's the mission that really got me into using backstabbing and bows from the sneak position

I went through it first time without much difficulty :-\

What kind of characters are you playing? I'm a stealthy guy as is befitting a thief and didn't struggle.

I've not done that mission yet, but the 15x dagger damage in sneak mode perk become a vital tool now I'm regularly coming up against enemies who can kill me with a couple of swipes. Dungeons are now all about silently slitting throats rather than swords and fireballs.

So like the OCD mental I am I set about getting my smithing to max last night. Finally managed it with a backpack full of iron daggers and hide bracers, to realise that I don't have enough dragon stuff for dragon armour just yet. Going to go hunting.

Although I'm not sure which side up the smithing tree I should go, despite wearing light armour. The light armour side is shorter, so less skill points used, but literally all the perks prior to draqon armour will be mostly useless. Heavy armour side is one perk longer than light, but it allows me to create dragon armour, and daedric weapons, which would be better than glass, despite the fact that I would never wear heavy armour. If that makes sense.

Also, the smithing has caused me to level quite significantly, while my archery remains around level 50, so i'm struggling slightly with some of the scaled enemies. Found this problematic last night when doing a thieves guild quest in solitude, some sneak attacks from my bow hardly dented some of the tougher bandits. It was fun thought to try and think of new methods, using some of my "rainy-day" potions and then finaly discovering the dagger backstab with shrouded gloves. 30X sneak damage is nothing to be sniffed at, add a poison and I felt like a boss. Still never got one of those cool kill animations, always held down the power attack on dual daggers to attack, does that make a difference?

Amazing game

Nah - conjure, fireball till the mana runs out, Unrelenting Force, conjure, more fireballs. :)

If you're in the dark brotherhood, you can get a double-sneak damage with one-handed weapons becoming 30x damage.

I'm a stealth assassin, as people can't see me if I'm sneaking more than a few feet away from them. With my maxed-out blade of woe, I haven't met anything yet that can survive one swipe from the dagger.

I wasn't too happy about that quest because I thought it was wrong to force you into so much combat - I feel you should be able to stealth your way through if you wish and with Mercer in tow that was impossible.

It's a funny old game this - I've been using bows so much that I forgot there is no "strength" stat which I may have been neglecting whilst becoming a master archer. I used 1H quite a bit at the beginning and so switching over to IH with a rather cool sword I picked up from Mercer's place is still a completely valid alternative.

In other news I found a wicked potion selling for over 500g by mixing chaurus eggs, lunar moth wing and vampire dust weraring a couple of things to increase the strength of potions by 50%. I then forgot to switch back to combat gear and made a fight with 3 mammoths and a giant more difficult than it should have been. That's the source of my grand soul gems in future for sure.

I find horses pretty pointless. If you could shoot from them it would be a different story. And if they didn't have AI it would be better than the AI they have at the moment.

But I guess it is nice riding around on one. Until it gets itself killed.

I've had two horses so far, for a cumulative ownership time of one hour. Total riding time must have been 4 minutes.

The first one I stole from some bandits and had confiscated by a Whiterun guard. The second one waited outside a dungeon for me then died immediately upon returning to Winterhold during a fracas as part of the mage quest line.

Horses are useless, and I won't let any of you neigh-sayers tell me differently.
