Found this quick-save workaround:

what you do is go to your main menu and got to system>settings>gameplay and scroll down to the bottom and change "save on Character Menu" from 15min to 5mins.

now every 5min you can open you Character menu and it will auto save automatically... i also noticed that it will generate 3 autosave files letting you load from 5-10-15mins back.

ive found this to be very useful and i hope someone else can benefit from it too... :D

I prefer to turn the timed auto save function off completely and only have in on after fast travel and moving between distinct areas (this latter may be compulsory, I can't remember). That way you can keep control of your saves and ensure you always have one before you get bogged down in a hard section - if you are auto saving frequently then you may find all 3 auto save slots are used up in difficult situations and you don't have a "safe" save to fall back on.

They were, then I put perks into block as I was sitting on 10 points.

It probably didn't help that i'm not using a shield, and i'm wearing robes with zero armour properties. lol!

S'okay though. I have a new technique of circle-strafing the nearest tree, while blasting it with spell/staff combo.

What can I do to get better at the bow stuff? I don't find many opportunities to use it. I*'d also like to get some better spells on the go. How do you get invisibility?

I surprised by how much some of you have done, I've been playing loads and have been fairly productive, not just wandering but haven't got through much. Done all the mage stuff though I think.

I'm always amazed how quickly people seem to get through quests and move around the map but I really like to take my time. It's only realising I could do with a house and I have 3 dragon words which I can't do anything with which are driving me toward advancing the plot.

As for bows, they are wicked outside - the range is incredible - I was standing on the high bridge of Valtheim towers and there was a single bandit standing on the other bank of the river - no problem sniping him down in one shot. Also wildlife of course. In dungeons so far it's more tricky since I only seem to get one shot away before the victim is alerted and combat switches to melee. There are one or two traps you can set off with them too which do impressive damage - I hope these get added to the archery skill "count". Hopefully they will make dragon fights easier too, so stick with it and use it whenever the long range opportunities arise, but maybe also take advantage of trainers to accelerate the tasty perks - the elf in Riverwood and the girl in the Companions are accessible early.

As for invisibility, you can create potions using common ingredients such as

nirnroot, vampire dust and caurus eggs

. There is a spell which will require being a master in illusion.

Oh poor Lydia. She didn't make it ten steps out of Whiterun. :( We were ambush by some hired goons, she got caught in my flames and burnt to a crisp.

I work better alone.

How "caught up" in the fire was she? I have hit her many times by accident, fire and ice, she has taken many hits by enemies but she doesn't seem to have a problem. I'm playing on expert difficulty.

edit: So I reach a cave and there he is, the bandit leader on the other side of the cave and in the middle two others, skinning and cutting a mammoth.

I use the fury spell on the leader and he starts attacking the other two bandits. I'm safely hidden up on a ledge.

One bandit goes down and the other, who is a mage, backs off to some kind of entrance where there is a huge mammoth skull hanging. This is a trap though, that bandits have set up for strangers like me. The bandit leader doesn't realize because he is in fury mode. So he steps on a plate, the skull comes down on him causing MASSIVE damage, while at the same time he kills the mage bandit.

All 3 bandits are dead, mission over and I stroll down the stairs like the badass genius of a mage I am.

Agree with this, tend to just autosave at the start of a new zone, it makes exploring that bit more tense too!

Had an early night last night (02:30 finish) and actually managed to progress the story a little, killed my first dragon and can finally start to use some of the shouts I've been finding!

Bought my first house too, which was a massive relief. Spent a good hour or so knocking it into shape with all my ingredients, crafting matts and books stored away neatly. Swear I have OCD when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Now to finally move on to the Mages College!

OCD and a half. I just sell everything I find, all the time. You can always buy more later.

I just take some small comfort in the fact that I can't be the only one.. Otherwise why would they have included the feature to have your bookshelves place books of your choice in a nice neat order for you?

Well, I'm now in the Dark Brotherhood. I loved those missions in Oblivion, so here's hoping these ones are just as good!

It's ridiculous how easy it is to sink time into this game.

Oooh, good luck! Dark Brotherhood stuff was the main fun I had in Oblivion (didn't play it much) so when I 'found out' about them early on after a few hours of play I was quite excited!

Sadly, the fifteen hours (probably more) since then have been so enjoyable and filled with so many fun quests I've not even made it as far as initiating the quest to join them!

Upgraded wards are REALLY useful against groups of mages, I was able to maintain the dual wield apprentice level version (steadfast) for a good 30 seconds, whilst every attack restored my magicka. I like the way enemies seem to run out, so if you bide your time you can exhaust them of their power then run in and unleash hell.

I was determined not to use the destructive magic in this, never been too keen on the fire/lightning thing, so it's good to see you can put defensive skills to good use.

Have they changed the way you join the dark brotherhood? The old "murder someone, then sleep in a secure location" doesn't seem to work this time round. I spent ages finding a suitable victim too (some old git who was really rude!), cos I can't bring myself to murder total innocents!

I'm not brilliant at any kind of magic or blocking with my character, but I am utterly lethal with a bow. My tactic is always the same: sneak attack with the bow (usually kills most bandits/mages in one go), and now I have the perk to slow down time when zoomed it means I usually get three or so arrows off before I have to make a move. I then scurry off and either hide or get out the rather brutal mace I got given and finish people off.

My best form of 'defence' is the Sanguine Rose. For those who've not got it yet, this proves pretty invaluable if you find yourself in need of a distraction/bit of additional melee damage.

There's a quest-line mentioned in passing about someone, somewhere, performing a rite (barmen rumours?); and some other people discussing (in the street) a very strange child in one of the cities.

Would I be right in thinking that, say, the Giants and Mammoths right outside the first big city are of a set level, but, a random dragon comes nicely levelled? Finding it a bit odd that the one scripted and one random dragon I've fought so far have been pretty easy. The scripted one didn't even kill any of the NPC guards.

What counts as murder? Does it have to be a citizen of a town/village/etc? I bumped into three chaps in the wild, who were "Revellers". After we spoke, they walked off. I delayed one of them by constantly speaking to him, until his buddies had buggered off out of sight. I then hoisted the hapless chap up on my greatsword, and dumped his corpse on the floor. Not a murder according to my crime stats.

Great game. Walking feels oddly floaty though. Going up a steep, rocky slope feels like you're gliding an inch or two above the surface.

Edit: By the way, in case people can't be bothered reading every book they come across, I've found a few quests, lots of skill "points" and plenty of map locations just by opening books. It's the sort of tedious thing a lot of people might not bother doing, unless you're really into the lore of the game, so I thought I'd just mention it :)

For those that have done some treasure hunting, does the game indicate whether when you have found the treasure for the map you have as I think I have found the treasure as indicated on the treasure map but not sure whether it's a random bit of loot that just happens to be within the vicinity of the real treasure.

Yeah, dragons are more marketing than fearsome enemies in Skyrim.

Mammoths, giants and ice trolls are the real deal, unfortunately.

I'm finding it hard to specialise in one skill. It's too much of a glorious buffet. I love the magic, swords, archery. The spells that create magic weapons rule as they're the best of everything!

Me too. I'm trying to be a sneaky, bow-using, smooth-tongued, beefcake mage. It's going really well :) What's the level cap? As I approach it, I might need to settle down and really get good at one particular thing.

Me too really, i've changed my mind about my preferred style a few times. I don't think it matters too much, as long as you don't run out of perk points.

I was doing some quest chain and at some point a brawl became unavoidable. I'm completely magic orientated so fist fighting is not my strong suit (I'm level 25 and haven't equipped a weapon yet!). Every punch I threw took a tiny sliver of health off this guy. If I was going to win it would take forever and I couldn't be bothered. Unfortunately losing seemed to bug out the quest in some way. I ended up going back to an earlier save and leaving the quest for later. What's the deal with brawling in this? What affects your skill at it?
