Based on the Fallout 3 engine...easier for them I guess, I just wonder if it may start to feel derivative? Although was the FO3 engine based off the Oblivion engine?

You could just call this thread 'The Elder Scrolls V' you know ;)

We all knew the game has been in the works since before Oblivion (that's how Bethesda works in terms of planning, you can also spot loads of hints about Oblivion in Morrowind) and it really looked like it was being revealed at this year's E3. Glad to hear at least something about it, but this bit is the most encouraging:

"One thing I can say is that from when you first hear about it to when it's out will be the shortest it's been for us. It's pretty far along. When we show it, we want to show a lot, because there's a lot of game there to play right now.

Which sounds like we'll all be playing this game sometime in 2011 :D

Now all we can do is hope the mmo rumours aren't true :(

Edit: and it's really shit that they're still using the creaky old Oblivion engine - unless they've pimped it out so much that it might as well be a new engine.

Based on the Fallout 3 engine. Hmmm. I'm playing New Vegas right now which is all kinds of wonderful, but the engine is really showing its age, even when you take the bugs out the equation. Hopefully they botch enough on top to make it feel as lush as Oblivion did when it first came out, especially when it comes to character models and animation.

'based on the Fallout 3 engine' means it's the Oblivion engine guys. Back when Oblivion first came out it looked fucking amazing as the current gen had barely started, but by now it's really showing it's age. They've been developing ESV for so long I was kinda assuming they would be using fancy new tech. I'm looking forward to the reveal regardless, and I really really really hope they've done away with the retarded world levelling of Oblivion.

Really? Where?

Everywhere! Just go back and listen to the conversations and read letters and stuff, you'll notice that people are talking about the latest rumours from Cyrodiil suggesting problems and controversy surrounding the heirs to the emperor's throne. Little things like that which, looking back, reference the main plot and setting of TESIV. In Oblivion there's lots of talk about a Mage's revolt or something (it's been awhile since I played) on Summerset Isle, so some people assume that TESV will be set there. But iirc there was also something about Skyrim, so who knows.

Okay you'll have to forgive me but I have never played Oblivion; I am however up to my neck in mutants, raiders, regulators, giant fire ants, radscorpions and ghouls in fallout 3 which I'm loving to bits. That said I really think fallout 3 should have been properly third person, rather than third person, with maybe an RE4 type over the shoulder shooting view. Was Oblivion first person too as that would seem awful to me, using swords and whatnot?

Here's hoping the next elder scrolls game is third person anyway, whether or not its running on a fuel injected version of the oblivion/fallout 3 engine.

It will be first person with an optional third person view but, if earlier Bethesda games are anything to go by, the third person view will be crap. TES games are all about the first person immersion anyway, and there are a huge amount of third person rpgs to be getting on with instead of hoping that the TES games turn into one of those just for your particular benefit :P

I think what happened was the devs began planning and pre production on the game before seeing the fact that this console generation is not advancing anytime soon, so they had to break the old tradition of having a new elder scrolls game on new hardware as they've done the last few times. And of course they can't just do a PC exclusive so going back and modifying the existing oblivion/fallout 3 engine probably seemed like the best idea.

It is a pretty dated engine now and of course the bugs and issues are pretty well known, but they're still extremely atmospheric, involving and sometimes beautiful worlds and the one thing Oblivion was lacking in was content of substance to occupy a lot of the world outside of the better side quests. Copy and paste caves with little to do in them, lots of empty land which set the tone but didn't provide for much between main locations and of course the horrible levelling system. The development of the world and the tech itself meant (to me anyway) that the content took a back seat. I still loved the game, but Fallout 3 and Fallout NV after that shows what can happen when the engine is already in place and you work on improving the content the actual world contains.

To me this is good news. Take the existing engine, and try and make it look as good as possible sure. The main objective though is to create a world with more substance, with better quests, characters, things to do and places to explore. If they're not having to work on an entirely new gobsmacking tech impressive engine, then good, they have no excuse but to make sure the content and gameplay itself is a massive improvement to elder scrolls IV. Sometimes not jumping forward is a good thing, it means you have to make the best of where you're standing rather than compromise because of new tech.

I just don't like the first person view - it doesn't at all add to the immersion at all for me...... and I can't see what I'm wearing without L2ing to the (crap) 3rd person view or hitting VATs. There again I don't really like fps's so the problem is probably just mine :)

While the graphics whore in me is saddened by the lack of a next gen and a stunning shiny new TES engine to go with it, I do agree with what you say here. If this means that they're now free to focus more on content and stuff like quest design and AI and levelling, then I'm all for it. This had better be the case though.

It's a matter of preference. But Bethesda rpg third person views have always been crap and mainly exist to be able to look at you character and all the nice gear he's wearing. If you're determined to sample some Bethesda rpg goodness and you really want to play using a decent third person view, your best bet would be to go for the PC version and patiently wait until some friendly modder makes a nice mod that does exactly that :)

As long as the characters and animations look a lot better and they finally kill the persistent hitching and crashing problems in the PC version, I don't think it will matter that they're using the same engine. It does have a lot of positives and their content creation workflow will be really streamlined by now which could mean that there'll be more, more interesting and less buggy stuff.

Voice acting really needs to be a lot better too.

I just realised that Todd Howard says in that article in the first post that it will be revealed 'soon'. And the only event that is 'soon' is next month's VGAs, and coincidentally VG24/7 is reporting that 10 more premieres (apart from the Bioware and Saints Row 3 stuff) are still to be revealed.

Could it be?

OMGOMGOMG Elder Scrolls V at the VGAs next month - the rumour starts here!!!111!!111one :omg:
