In all seriousness I wouldn't pay £5 for a magazine just to read a journalist's opinion of a single game. The £5 I pay for Edge is for its editorial, interviews, retrospectives and content that focusses on more than just the latest games the industry has pumped out. The fact that some things are put online is merely a courtesy to journalistic integrity and also a subtle advert for the sort of quality you'd expect in the mag.

And opinionated reviews are ten a penny. You don't need to buy a magazine to have a game recommended to you so good for Edge for marginalising that aspect of the publication.

(for the record I tend to avoid reading reviews and focus on features and more unique content, hence my rather strong opinion)

In one issue of gamesTM I wrote 4 letters in the letters section. They were so desperate for letters they issued a plea on the old GTM forums. I sent them loads (I was the only person who did) and they put them all in under pseudonymous.

I used the prize voucher to help buy a limited edition bluey silver GBA. True story.

This is balanced by the fact I am the highest poster on the forum that The Shape/Letter From America quotes from each month, and he has never once used a quote from me because we detest one another.

I'm not sure why I'm telling you any of this. I think I just needed to share with someone.

I posted on their forum and an issue or two later that post was printed as a letter. It was about Halo 2's online play monopolising XBL to the detriment of other titles.

Funny now that you could say COD is doing the same thing.

What would a perfect format be? I guess it would be something like

{Recent event/release} linked to {similar occurrence in the past}. Some nostalgic talk about the wide eyed wonder of the days when {occurrence in the past} took place and it was all amazing. Link that people are now jaded because {recent event} isn't considered to be anything short but a miracle. Some contemporary talk about 'the state of the industry', with some predictions things may not go the right way. A positive ending because {recent event} is actually much more interesting and hopeful than {past occurrence} but that we are too spoilt to see it.

And this in FuzzyDunlop's slightly pompous wording, but then with a little bit more business talk woven through it.

So to get decent contributions edge has to now bribe its readership with freebies? Wow I guessed it was pretty poor now bad but didnt realise things had got this bad in the 8 years since I stopped buying it.

What are you going on about? They've been giving one letter a month a prize for ages. As have almost all magazines since the dawn of time. I got a prize from Amstrad Action back in 1988.

Edge started doing the DS back when the DS Lite was relatively fresh, I think. Maybe 2006?
