The letter Edge wouldn't print

Edge 220, page 83. "We couldn't review Halo: Reach within these pages because we weren't able to spend enough time with it." Cue a behind-the-scenes explanation about the issues games journalists now face with publishers looking over their shoulders when reviewing the biggest releases. Later in the article: "for our full conclusions, based on extensive play, head to our website."

Good on you for doing justice to such an important game and giving it the time it requires and deserves, I think to myself. I also decide at that point to wait until next month's issue is in my hands and to read it then. I had already started playing Halo Reach so I had a fair idea of how good it was. As an Xbox 360 owner, it was already an essential purchase. Cue a month of sitting around, living out my lonely little life, avoiding forum posts and your website, and waiting for the next issue in my subscription to come through the door.

You will imagine my surprise, then, upon reading through your December issue, when I discovered that a review of Halo Reach was not present. I double- and triple-checked the reviews section. Where was it? The quote from the last month's Reviews intro played back in my mind: "for our full conclusions, based on extensive play, head to our website."

I don't buy Edge magazine to fund your website. In fact, I kind of object to reviews and content being posted to your site at all. Why am I buying your magazine when you duplicate content (and even expand on it, with extensive playtime) elsewhere, for free? In a time where so much games journalism is available online for free, with videos and pictures and wallpapers, surely you should be doing everything possible to make sure your magazine is seen to retain its value to paying readers? Can we look forward to future big name releases being reviewed on your website and not your magazine?

I really don't get what your problem is. It was still released just only online instead of in print, who really cares? And it's not like edge print all their reviews online, even if they did it wouldn't really bother me as the reviews are only really a small section of the mag.

They've left the Black Ops review out of the mag as well and I should think they'll be doing the same with Gran Turismo 5.

Yeah, the reviews section is becoming increasingly irrelevant, but, hey, we've got write-ups for Fighters Uncaged and The Shoot to keep us subscribed. How long has The Shoot been out for now anyway?

Because I've lost my account details and I'm very hungover. It's all I can do to clench my bowels tight and stop myself from being sick right now.

Could you do it for me?

You're going to be sick out of your arse? Is this like that South Park episode?

My problem is with people like you and the Edge management with your thoughtless attitude and inability to see the bigger picture.

You don't save the Titanic by giving out loads of free seats to serfs whilst it's sinking. You build a stronger ship and hire people to look out for icebergs, and fuck anyone else who isn't willing to be a part of the grand design. And then you get a solid clientele of people who really respect what you're doing for the cruise liner industry plus greatly increased job satisfaction and you watch the money come rolling in.

I'm out of +1s at the minute. Shame.

I've written plenty of letters to Edge that were never printed. I think that, as a rule, critiques of the magazine get read and then not printed, while letters that start or continue a discussion tend to get through. I think most publications work that way, and I'm okay with that, because generally speaking the former doesn't make for a particularly interesting read, unless it mixes in the latter.

With that in mind, if you were to write another letter contextualising Edge's Reach review in the larger issue of the ongoing development of online games journalism, then it'd probably get printed. Maybe I'll write one, I could do with a DSi.

Is it okay to share one's opinion on Edge in this here thread? I can't really comment on whether or not Edge is better or worse these days, despite having read the magazine since '99. I'm so used to getting it every month that it's kind of like an old friend. I have kept all my old issues and I could never dream of getting rid of them. It would just feel very wrong. Ages ago I used to read it back to front and it was almost as good fun as actually buying a new game. These days I mainly read just some of it. But it's still essential to me.

So good old Edge. I hope you will always be there for me.

What are you talking about, since when is Edge a sinking cruise liner, and what big picture are you on about? It's just a computer game mag. You still haven't really elaborated on what your problem with it is. The same content is still being written and released, the only difference is that a few big titles might get their reviews put up online first so that we don't have to wait, and even fewer titles possibly might not printed in the actual issue but you know where to look for it anyway.

So whats your problem? Your not missing out on anything, apart from maybe being able to read a certain review on the bog.

Really if you feel there's no need to buy the mag and that you get erything you need from Edge online, just stop buying it, problem solved and it will cheaper for you as well. Theres a lot more important things to complain about, seriously why bother with this.

Was it you who previously won a DS with a Edge letter?

If the content posted on the website makes the magazine irrelevant, then don't buy it: money saved.

If the magazine remains worth a buy, then buy it: no change.

I'm struggling to see the problem.

Stop being sensible, this is a thread for pitchforks and OUTRAGE!

The problem here is that the Titanic cannot be saved. Thus its existence as an appropriate metaphor (which doesn't even seem very appropriate in the above context since it confuses the metaphor with what it attempts to analogise) for mortally wounded projects that - lo! - cannot be saved.

I did get a letter printed in Edge though without even trying or intending to.
