PLaying as a renegade in 1 and 2 is fun. In 3, not so much.

Care to expand on why (in spoilers)?

Spoiler

in ME1 and 2 you can maximise your evilness by being a dick occasionally and putting points into that in ME1. this would unlock dialogue options for renegade. in ME3 being renegade involves genocide and murdering your friends. also some choices like saving the geth are paragon randomly when they are really grey. playing as a renegade you end up shooting wrex and that's when I pulled the plug on it. issue is you have to go full evil because of the way experience works. doing the random paragon choice actually lowers your renegade and you end up split in a way that you can argue either way in the dialogue wheel. they properly fucked that up.

so to sum up decisions are more extreme and are randomly assigned a good vs. evil score when they are actually gray. also you are forced to commit one way so you can't really just choose what you think its best for each situation. decisions were less extreme in 2 and in 1 you could just put points into it.

Reading the recent opinions here I have to say it still doesn't make me want to play 2 and 3 particularly. I stumbled across 1 a few months after its release and ended up absolutely adoring it. The sense of grandeur but also isolation was incredible. The Mako sections basically made the entire game for me. They just nailed the atmosphere with that mechanic and realised enough of the setting to elevate the entire title. Everything I've heard about 2 and 3 doesn't match up with what I liked so much about the original so I've steered clear. Plus the time investment required. Just my 2 pence. I'm still open to being convinced eventually! ;)

Well 2 & 3 are different games insomuch as they made them more action-oriented and the character customisation is streamlined. They are great games, but loving 1 doesn't follow that you'll love the others for this reason.

I did in Feb. they play great with mouse and keyboard. absolutely brilliant. don't know why people get hung up on controller support.

I don't think those that prefer playing with a controller do so because it is better than a keyboard and mouse, for me at least, it's purely down to comfort.

In games like the Witcher 3 and Mass Effect, I like to be able to sit back and play for a few hours, and I can't do that comfortably with a keyboard and mouse. Not having pad support these days is a big problem for me, I think that last game I managed without was XCOM 2 (though I ended up using the Steam controller config).

Thanks guys, i'll buy them in the next Steam sale then.

You can only get 3 on Origin - but the first too are a lot cheaper on there as well (50% or so currently). Indeed, the first two games were £2.50-ish (for both, not each) on Origin recently, and it isn't the worst digital platform out there.

Same here I think.   I have Mass Effect on Xbox but it seems I must have claimed it on GWG on just my sons account so I can only play it on the downstairs xbox One and not on my own one.  Grrrrrrr.

oops.  Just bought all 3 off ebay for £10.  Origin CD Key digital download.  You can get Controller Mods for all 3 so looks like I'll be playing them on PC.  Laptop for now.  The gaming PC is getting more and more tempting all the time.

Does the control mod work properly for ME1? I seem to remember reading something about it not working for the hacking stuff or something? It was a long time ago so could well have been fixed.

I've not tried it.  Just had a quick google.  I'll give it a whirl when I get it.

Taking a look at Nexusmods this controller support for ME1 is the second most popular ME1 mod.  Looks like it 'should' be ok

http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect/mods/60/?

From what I've read briefly of the controller support for each game, should you want to say do multiple mods for say controller support as well as mod for better textures etc always install the controller mod first.  Most of the mods tell you that though in the descriptions.

I would honestly say that if you're looking to buy the Mass Effect games just get them on Origin.  Mass Effect 1 on Origin already includes the DLC and it's already a huge pain in the ass dealing with the Bioware Points for DLC for 2 and 3, it's an even bigger pain if you have to deal with Steam as well in this case due to the way the DLC works.  On Origin you can at least just 'buy and install' via the client.  I believe for Steam ME2 you need to go to Biowares website, and download the separate DLCs from there and install each separately.  It's just a huge fucking mess and EA really need to sort it out.

There's not much benefit to them helping out though, when they want people to use Origin rather than Steam, so I doubt they'll address it.

I was talking more about stripping out bioware points completely as that's how you pay for the dlcs even on Origin.  Even doing some kind of cheaper bundle on Origin would be nice, to let more people buy the DLC at an affordable price.

As has been mentioned already this isn't going to be the case because EA don't do remasters apparently.

That said they could do a pretty straight port of the PC versions of 2 and 3, and ME1 is already on Xbox 360 BC. That would leave PS4 owners without ME1 but they were stuck without that for ages anyway.

It's hard playing this on laptop with a touchpad.  Walking and trying to turn at the same time are proving difficult.  I'll hopefully try the controller mod tonight although I'm not sure how it'll cope with the whole "press space bar, then hit enter to bring up a mouse pointer to then  select what your squad does" thing.

I thought Minecraft was a bit of a stretch on a laptop touchpad.

On the console versions you just held a button and it brought up an ability wheel while pausing the game, I'd imagine that the mod copies that (and the later PC versions switch over to it).

Why not use a  mouse at the very least? Even a cheap two quid mouse would be a gazillion times more comfortable. Touchpads are not meant to be used for games, trust me on this.

Yeah I think i'll do that, but I tend to just play on the sofa with it on my lap so was hoping to minimise faff. Yes yes, I know, I'm clearly doing it wrong.  I really should just buy a desktop and get it over with.

Installed the controller mod. Plugged in Xbox 360 controller. Worked first time.

Just need to work out how to get the squad ordering circle thingy up. Other than that it plays great!

Edit: Bumper buttons bring up the squad command circle.  Perfect!
