Some of the vistas, with weird tree-like roots growing out of the water look pretty astonishing. All over that.

 

I think if he gets the story, characters, and emotional beats right, nothing else will matter. Like, I dislike anything with a fantasy/medieval setting, but I loved Game of Thrones just because the characters were so damn good.

 

You would hope, given that most of the tech had already been worked out, and he’s had nigh on 13 years to get a script right, he’d have managed to put something decent together… :huh:

 

But yeah.

I don't think James Cameron spends all this time making something rubbish. I can't understand the internet's determination to rewrite the fact that every motherfucker on the planet went to see the first one, and a great many of them thoroughly enjoyed it. Nobody's 'forgotten' Avatar. A movie you liked doesn't have to be an integral part of your day to day life for the following decade.

James Cameron has had more hits than misses (and his hits are some of the biggest in the business) but, visuals aside, the first film was pretty forgettable and it’s not something I’ve felt the desire to rewatch more than once. I mean it’s not bad by any stretch, it just kind of exists. 
 

Despite that (or maybe as a result of it), I’m finding it very difficult to muster any enthusiasm for this or any of its sequels.

Everyone went to see it because it was James Cameron, and it was James Cameron doing sci-fi again, with the promise of cutting edge visuals, groundbreaking 3D etc. 

 

But can anyone honestly say it’s up there with Aliens, Terminator, The Abyss? Even Titanic blows it away. 
 

You know, the visuals and overall aesthetic of Terminator and Aliens - those movies are iconic and have never been bettered imo. Avatar looks like FMV sequences in any number of generic sci-fi or fantasy videogames. 
 

I just hold James Cameron to higher standards.

I feel that Cameron is a brilliant technician who is a poor writer. Avatar is a stunning technical achievement for its era but it's painful to sit through thanks to a total lack of nuance in the writing and Cameron's signature terrible dialogue. The technical novelty wears off quite quickly and what's left is, frankly, quite boring.

 

I'm sure A2 will do very well, but I won't be watching.

I wonder if it’ll be hurt by the wide availability of lush hyperreal CGI forest/water/sky scenes on consoles. The first Avatar came out at the peak of the Xbox 360 beige era so it didn’t exactly have a lot of competition in the “CGeye candy” stakes.

 

Not even sure whether I’m serious.
